Helpful to mothers at all stages of motherhood

First off, I should disclose that I received a free copy of the book and was asked to consider reviewing it. That said, if I had disliked the book, I would have simply declined to review it, rather than give a glowing review to a book I did not enjoy. This book is relevant to all sorts of mothers. I appreciated that as there is often an assumption in books about simplifying with children that the children come in groups of three, one of whom is in diapers and the remaining children being toddlers. This book makes just as much sense for single mothers, mothers of almost grown children, and mothers of large or small families as it does for the oft-assumed traditional family with very young children. The author also does a nice job of balancing the need to simplify one's physical space with other aspects of simplicity, such as time and money management.
The author gives broad ideas about simplifying in each category that she discusses and then does an excellent job of making those broad ideas more specific without getting so narrow that suggestions are only applicable under certain circumstances. She fleshes out the suggestions with specific techniques but is not overly preachy about following her techniques as the only way to simplify. During the part of the book where she discusses decluttering specific rooms, she strikes this balance nicely as well - suggestions are concrete but there are not so specific that they will only work in one type of house with one type of clutter. As an aside, I also liked that she includes easy recipes for the cleaners that she uses - this was not an integral part of the book but was a nice lagniappe to find in there!
I did have a few problems with the book, however. I found the Mommy Testimonies quite unhelpful. They were too shallow to add much of anything to the book. One the up side, there were not very many of these included. The quotes from other mothers suffered the same way. They tended to be throwaway comments, rather than useful insights. It felt like someone advised the author to "incorporate case studies and quotes" so she did, but not in a helpful way. The attributed quotes from various other authors were a different story. These tended to illuminate the point that the author made in the previous section nicely and, because they were set off from the rest of the text, provided nice pauses in the book. My other problem is that the author assumes that we all want to be the fun and funny mom that tends to be glorified in the media. I am neither and probably never will be, so holding this up as an ideal just makes me feel inadequate. It would have been more helpful if the sections about ways to incorporate attributes into one's mothering such as being fun and mothering with grace were presented as possibilities, rather than ideals.
Overall, I would recommend this as a worthwhile read for all types of mothers. While the ideas are not earth shattering, they are presented in a clear organized manner and the level of detail makes change manageable without being overly prescriptive.

Lots of tips from a Mom who's been there

This books is a good place to start if you're a mom seeking a more simple lifestyle. This book is chock-full of practical ways to simplify your life. You can read straight through the 160-plus pages, or you can use the table of contents to find the section you need most right now: time management, “stuff” (in this case she does mean physical things), household management, and managing your kids’ lives. She includes 50 tips just on the one topic of how to simplify grocery shopping — that should give you an idea of how many good ideas there are in this book.
One great thing about this books is that it’s not one of those books you read and as you read, you discover that you’re feeling more overwhelmed. You realize that the author has her “stuff” together in a way that you will never be able to match, and you feel more disorganized that you did when you opened the book. Sandy makes it clear she’s in the trenches with us, her fellow moms, and she not only shares ideas but she has her priorities straight. She encourages us to know why we are striving to simplify our lives, so we’re not just simplifying for simplicity’s sake. She also talks about the importance of “me-time” so we don’t experience mommy-burnout. She reminds us of the tools we’ve been given that will help us be better moms. And she shares words of wisdom from other moms, so it’s not just a one-woman show.

Far from being another theoretical book on simplicity, it is full of practical advice, easy to follow steps, and stories from real women with whom readers will identify. Its energy and positivity will have you ready, willing and eager to make some real changes. If simplicity is what you’re looking for, look no further; this book has everything you need to put you on the path to minimizing clutter and distraction and becoming a better, more organized, more relaxed version of you than you ever thought you could be!
