About the Author

Henry R. Nau has taught political science and served in government for more than 30 years. He is currently Professor of Political Science and International Affairs in the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, specializing in international relations and U.S. foreign policy. From 1981 to 1983, he served on the National Security Council as senior director responsible for international economic affairs. He also served, between 1975 and 1977, as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs in the Department of State. In 1977 he received the State Department's Superior Honor Award. His books include, among others, Conservative Internationalism: Armed Diplomacy under Jefferson, Polk, Truman, and Reagan; At Home Abroad: Identity and Power in American Foreign Policy; Trade and Security: U.S. Policies at Cross-Purposes; The Myth of America's Decline: Leading the World Economy into the 1990s; and National Politics and International Technology: Nuclear Reactor Developments in Western Europe.

5 RADIANT STARS!!!!

I've been looking forward to this book since I first about it from one of the authors, Heidi McLaughlin. I've been a Heidi fan for a very long time and this books goes outside her normal box of writing which I love as it helps me expand my reading "box" too. Teaming up with LP Dover was a great move as this book read so smoothly with such great transitions that I couldn't tell which author was writing which chapters/paragraphs. In my mind that makes for the perfect partnership.

What happens when two people who have loved each other from afar, well not really "afar" because they're in each other's lives but always thought having a relationship was off limits, become engaged in beyond their wildest dreams hotter than sizzling hot sex without knowing who it is they're having this mind blowing sex with?

Our Hero, Parker Ward, is a successful, rich business man who invests in companies either to save them or sell them but always making money whatever the outcome for the business is. He has an opportunity to invest in Society X a club that has opened in Portland headed by a college friend. As he's getting a tour of what Society X is and what really goes on behind some of the closed doors at Society X. Not only can you get your wildest fantasies met, but there are rules and these are rules that cannot be broken....

"People know if they break the rules, they're out. There are no second chances at Society X. What are the rules? No Names or numbers, everything is anonymous. Each member enters a room at their own risk."

As soon as I read this, I was ready to be signed up! How can you pass up an opportunity to have a no holds barred sexual experience of your life without the next day ramifications? Needless to say, Parker is very intrigued by this and decides to invest in Society X. Unbeknownst to him, Mia Hudson, our heroine, his best friends little sister who he's had a crush on for years is also trying out one of the rooms at Society X. As a trial member, she gets the opportunity to use one of the rooms and then based on her rating by the member she's paired with could potentially become a full member. When a friend of hers tells her....

"I'm telling you, nothing is better than a good, anonymous f***"

Mia is intrigued enough to move ahead. The beauty and intrigue of the Dark Room as it's called, is just that, it's pitch black, there's no speaking, only touching and feeling. When she and Parker have their first nights there together without knowing it's them, the intensity of their connection results in emotions neither one of them are prepared for and as Mia thinks about what happened while in the Dark Room...

"Holy hell. It's been two days since the dark room adventure and I can't get it out of my mind. I have never felt so dirty, yet more alive, in all my life."

Let me just say this about Mia's thoughts after her first encounter, I will NEVER, think the same way about bananas again...EVER!! You'll know what I'm talking about when you read this book....

Needless to say, as the book progresses and these two who are, in my mind, falling for each other in the room, and starting to get closer than ever before outside the room, because they're now working together, Parker's way of trying to resist Mia, have additional nights in the Dark Room, their intoxication for their mysterious partner grows almost to a point of obsession....

"I want more. Those are the words I can feel clearly on my skin, like they're burning through me. I want more too, so much more."

Adding to the mix of this whole relationship, is Mia's ex, Zac, who's the biggest a$$hat I've read about in quite a while and the new employee at Ward Enterprises. Do these two have a connection????

When certain activities come to light, let's just say the proverbial s*** hits the fan and it gets tense, emotional and fraught with feelings neither Parker or Mia were willing to admit out loud let alone to each other, their destiny seems to be set for them. Or is it? There are so many questions that I asked myself as I was reading further and further into the book that I needed to be answered....

Will they find out who they've been meeting in the Dark Room? What happens if they do? Does it ruin a long-standing close friendship? Will Parker admit to his best friend, Mia's big brother, Andrew how he feels about Mia?

These and so many other questions are answered by the end of the book. This is a book that should not be missed this year and I can say unequivocally, Dark Room will be in my top books for 2016!!!

Mclaughlin and Dover = match made in perfection

I love Heidi Mclaughlin and L.P. Dover so one clicking was a no brained for me. What I didn't expect was a storey so well written, told andc with substance with the added steam of the hottest scenes between two people I've EVER READ! absolutely 10 stars would be given if possible. The characters in Mia and Parker are well developed. No lame "woe is me" garbage. A strong female with coming off a bad breakup. A lifelong friend in Parker. A well rounded family, dreams... Everything. And when it all comes together... Its magic!

I don't know if I should post this review or go and take a cold shower. HOLY MOSES. This book, this is a story I have been waiting for. One that I pick up and cannot put down and cannot stop thinking about it.

I was wrapped up in this story right from the start. These two ladies on their own have written great stories and combining their love of writing together has made one power house of a story. This novel is nothing short of brilliant and it is what I love to see when reading a co-written book. You cannot tell who is writing which character and they flow of the book is flawless.

I loved the characters, the story line (I don't want to spoil it), and how the whole book was developed. It is perfect and exceeded my expectations of it. Grab a copy today and get ready to open the door to the Dark Room! After you're done, you will be begging for more and trying to figure out how to get in to Society X. I know I am.

Well crafted and engaging

Philosophy in Seven Sentences introduces the arena of philosophy through examining seven sentences written by different philosophers throughout the ages. Dr. Groothuis makes clear that these seven sentences don't cover the whole range of philosophy or introduce all elements of philosophy but were rather chosen because of their impact on his own philosophizing. The seven sentences covered do open up excellent discussions about the nature of knowledge and philosophy in general. Groothuis writes in a clear manner and uses humor in ways that help even the philosophical uninformed or new comer grasp the importance of these sentences and the discussions they generate.

I would recommend this as a great introduction to the arena of philosophy.

Douglas Groothuis is professor of Philosophy at Denver Seminary. He earned his PhD at the University of Oregon and he specializes in Philosophy of Religion, the History of Philosophy and other areas. Dr. Groothuis is the author or editor of 13 books including
Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for Biblical Faith, Truth Decay: Defending Christianity Against the Challenges of Postmodernism, and In Defense of Natural Theology: A Post-Humean Assessment in addition to the title under review here. Thesis
In Philosophy In Seven Sentences, Groothuis seeks to make philosophy a little less intimidating and esoteric to the uninitiated, while demonstrating the need to think well in order to live a good life. He does this by introducing the work of seven philosophers with quotes that embody their work. Each chapter fleshes out the ideas behind the sentences, as well as some background information on the philosophers to whom they are attributed.

Synapsis
In chapter 1, Protagoras’ claim “Man is the measure of all things: of the things which are, that they are, and of things which are not that are not” is examined. Groothuis notes how this idea has some merit, but pressed to its logical conclusion, it leads to the inability to know anything.
In chapter 2, we hear from Socrates, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Groothuis notes that this is a hyperbolic statement, urging the hearers to seek truth by which to live, which requires comparing one’s life to that truth.
In chapter 3, Aristotle tells us, “All men by nature desire to know.” In service of this belief, Aristotle formulated the laws of logic, especially the Law of Noncontradiction. Groothuis points out that knowledge is impossible if we cannot escape contradiction.
In chapter 4, Augustine’s quote, “You have made us for yourself, and restless is our heart until it comes to rest in you” is examined. Augustine came to this realization, which he wrote in Confessions, as he reflected on his life and the process through which he became a Christian. He argues that humans feel a real guilt, stemming from an awareness of objective morality, and since the only remedy for this guilt is in God’s provision, rest can only be found in him.
In chapter 5, Groothuis analyzed Descartes’ quote “I think, therefore I am.” Descartes was searching for something he could know with certainty, and he found one such item in the realization that thinking requires a thinker. Descartes also devised an argument for God from the fact that the idea of God is innate and therefore implanted by God. Groothuis also notes Descartes’ contribution to the mind-body problem.
In chapter 6, Pascal’s quote “The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing” is unpacked. Like many references to “the heart” in older (and even ancient) literature, this one is often misunderstood. Rather than pitting emotion against intellect, Pascal was pointing to basic beliefs, and first principles on which all other beliefs depend.
In chapter 7, Kierkegaard warns us, “The greatest hazard of all, losing one’s self, can occur very quietly in the world, as if it were nothing at all.” Groothuis points out that for Kierkegaard, an adequate self-awareness leads to despair, and one must come to terms with that despair such that they throw themselves on God’s mercy.

Analysis

Philosophy In Seven Sentences serves as an excellent primer on philosophical thought. In fact, it ought to be required reading before any undergraduate takes and introduction to Philosophy course. Far too many take these courses and hear and read the opinions of philosophers when the students lack the tools of philosophy. This books shows how even the most brilliant philosophers’ opinions require careful consideration. This book is accessible to anyone with at least a high school education. Reading it made me wish I had the time and resources to pursue a degree in Philosophy.

Douglas Groothuis takes seven sentences from seven philosophers as a sort of introduction to philosophy, "the art of thinking well about what matters most." In the case of this book less is more. Although this book is not voluminous, it contains truth in concetrated form. It is laundry detergent for the mind. Philosophy in Seven Sentences demonstrates the importance of good thinking by showing the real world results of the way we think. These are not ivory tower speculations, but potent ideas that affect us all. Moral relativism, self examination, the search for real knowledge, the restlessness and despair of our hearts, etc., and the way we think about these things have great effects on our world. Whether we have heard of these philosophers or not, these words have shaped the way things are. Douglas Groothuis examines their words with brevity and wit. One does not have to be especially interested in philosophy to enjoy Groothuis's engaging style of writing, but it is doubtful that anyone can finish this book without wanting to know more about philosophy. Philosophy in Seven Sentences could serve as the proverbial salt in the oats of an increasingly anti-intellectual society, encouraging us to drink more deeply from the waters of philosophy. As I read this book I often found myself thinking, "I need to read more Plato (or Aristotle, Descartes, Pascal, etc.)." I heartily recommend Philosophy in Seven Sentences.

If you are up for lively, insightful, sometimes outrageous essays on a variety of philosophical and literary topics, 19th century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer will not let you down. ON AUTHORSHIP AND STYLE
"Obscurity and vagueness of expression are at all times and everywhere a very bad sign. In ninety-nine cases out of a hundred they arise from vagueness of thought, which, in its turn, is almost always fundamentally discordant, inconsistent, and therefore wrong. When a right thought springs up in the mind it strives after clearness of expression, and it soon attains it, for clear thought easily finds its appropriate expression." --------- Being myself a musician and trained in nada yoga, that is, the yoga of sound, I recently started reading a short book on listening by a French philosopher and aesthetician in the postmodern tradition. The language was so convoluted and chock-full of double negatives, qualifications, obscure language and multiple references, I almost felt like shouting, ‘My good man, if you have something insightful to say, kindly say it!’

ON READING AND BOOKS
“One can never read too little of bad, or too much of good books: bad books are intellectual poison, they destroy the mind. In order to read what is good one must make it a condition never to read what is bad; for life is short, and both time and strength are limited.” ---------- I never tire of reminding myself that life is too short for bad taste. I would even take this a step further: if, after giving a book a fair chance, the book still doesn’t speak to me, I put it aside and find another book I can really get into, grow wings and take flight.

“Any kind of important book should immediately be read twice, partly because one grasps the matter in its entirety the second time, and only really understands the beginning when the end is known, and partly because in reading it the second time one’s temper and mood are different, so that one gets another impression; it may be that one sees the matter in another light.” ---------- Schopenhauer’s words are particularly true respecting literature. The novel, story or poem comes alive and is colored by our mood, emotions and feelings. With each rereading, we gain an additional angle or slant, thus expanding our experience and understanding. I recall preparing for a group discussion of John Keats’s ‘Ode to a Grecian Urn’. It must have taken me at least a dozen readings, some silent, some aloud, to gain a basic appreciation of the poem’s rhythm, beauty and depth of meaning.

THE EMPTINESS OF EXISTENCE
“That human life must be a kind of mistake is sufficiently clear from the fact that man is a compound of needs, which are difficult to satisfy; moreover, if they are satisfied, all he is granted is a state of painlessness, in which he can give himself up to boredom.”--------- To gauge the truth of this statement, a question we can ask ourselves: ‘Are we easily bored?’ Our answer speaks not so much to the emptiness of existence in the abstract as to the emptiness in our own individual lives.

ON WOMEN
Schopenhauer’s infamous misogynous essay. “Women are directly adapted to act as the nurses and educators of our early childhood, for the simple reason that they themselves are childish, foolish, and short-sighted — in a word, are big children all their lives.” ---------- Just goes to show, even a great thinker can be very, very wrong, even laughable. I’ve learned from many excellent teachers in various fields: creative writing, music, theater, dance, yoga, and most of my teachers have been women.

THINKING FOR ONESELF
“The presence of a thought is like the presence of our beloved. We imagine we shall never forget this thought, and that this loved one could never be indifferent to us. But out of sight out of mind! The finest thought runs the risk of being irrevocably forgotten if it is not written down.” ---------- From my own experience, my thoughts have staying power when I translate them into writing; this certainly applies to thoughts and impressions about the books I review.

You can't afford NOT to read this book

Anyone interested in learning how the CIA operates (and for Americans that should be all of us) will find this book fascinating. Choc-a-bloc with anecdotes and infomation that is both scary and amusing, it's hard to put down. Did you know that former CIA director John Deutch place l7,00, that's right, THOUSAND, CIA files, some of which were classified as top secret on his unclassified home computer? Did you know that since 9/11 certain Arab countries such as Yemen have actively cooperated with the CIA in its' war against al Qaeda? Do you want to know what the CIA is doing to try to insure there is never another 9/11? Do you (as I do) question whether we should have invaded Iraq? Read Kessler's analysis of the information amassed by the CIA demonstrating that Sadam Hussein was concealing a program dedicated to developing weapons of mass destruction and then decide what you think about the decision. Clearly a fan of George Tenet, whose achievements are impressive by any standard, Kessler is nonetheless critical of the CIA in many respects, as well he should be. Don't criticize the CIA without understanding something about it. This book will help you do just that.

Somewhat misleading title

"Inside the Secret Campaign Against Terror" makes it sound, at least to me, that the book will concentrate primarily on the battle against Al-Queda. However, Kessler doesn't get around to that until about 2/3rds of the way in; the first 2/3rds are essentially an overview of the history of the CIA from its inception; not that that isn't interesting, but do I really have to read about the Bay of Pigs and Irangate again? Also Kessler's writing style is dry, lacking flair, which shouldn't surprise me since he comes from a newspaper background. Overall, a mixed bag. For those interested in reading about the battle against Al-Queda, The Cell (the authors names escape me for the moment, but do a search and you'll find it) is far, far superior.

A Welcome and Timely Compendium of Tenet's Accomplishments

As other reviews have noted, this book is partisan toward George Tenet's Directorship, but in my opinion this is most welcome at a critical time when there are many calls to scapegoat one the CIA's most effective directors.
Tenet followed a series of failed Directorships (no less than 5 in 7 years!) and has revived a cultural of confidence and intelligent risk taking in the Agency that is crucial to prosecution of the War on Terror. If the feckless (and invariably insubstantially supported) calls to fire Tenet are heeded it will not only be a crushing blow to morale within the CIA and the intelligence community generally, but will also send a message that the (all too recent) bad old days of political scapegoating have returned, and that operatives, agents and analysts should revert to C.Y.A. mode.
Tenets accomplishments are considerable. To relate just a few:
He began the process of reviving HUMINT after it had been gutted by his predecessors; he literally pounded the witness table in hearings urging policy makers to take the offensive against al-Qaeda, and identifying Bin Laden as the country's single most important covert threat, years before 911; he promoted Coffer Black, the Khartoum station chief, to head the CIA's Counterterrorism Center precisely because of his expertise on al-Qaeda and his aggressiveness; he increased the staff of the Counterterrorism Center from a few dozen employees to over 300, again years before 911, while also integrating FBI employees on special assignment and actively addressing institutional infighting that undermined the center.
Unlike the technophobic Freeh at the FBI (who probably DID need to be fired) Tenet has been a consistent booster of modernization and innovation. He supported and pushed development of the Predator drone, for instance. With a less far sighted Director (who would have deferred to the Defense Dept's plodding development of similar but ultimately overly complex and less effective systems) we wouldn't have had that vital resource available, which has been responsible for "smoking" many al-Qaeda operatives.
Another example of Tenet's embrace of effective innovation is his promotion of In-Q-Tel, a nonprofit org established in '99 that funds and develops CIA technology and software projects, incorporating and co-opting private sector innovations. Prior to this, private firms with cutting edge technologies avoided the CIA because of it's cumbersome procurement procedures.
Along the same line, Tenet installed the ex-marine and retired millionaire investment banker A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard as the CIA's executive officer with a charge to cut through the Agency's bloated bureaucracy. Among other bold reforms, Krongard eliminated an entire directorate -- the powerful but bloated and sluggish fourth directorate, of administration -- so that (as in a private firm) the CIA's various divisions now report directly to higher management.
As other reviews have also noted, the treatment of CIA directors previous to Tenet is unremittingly negative. While this is glaringly true, it's not quite as bad as it sounds. Taking William Casey as an illustrative example, Kessler's criticisms -- poor handling of congress, shaky and inattentive administrative skills, failure to kill some ill conceived and counter productive operations, etc -- are at least arguably fair and accurate. The deficiency is not one of commission, but is rather the omission of Casey's strengths. For instance, Casey is given no credit at all for his most important accomplishments: his development of the economic warfare strategy against the Soviet Union, and his cultivation of accurate intelligence on the previously murky status of the Soviet economy.

What if the preppers are right?
The media shapes public opinion in all formats including news, cinema and television shows. It should come as no surprise that everyone doesn't necessarily form an opinion on every subject. Nor should you be shocked to hear that most opinions are uninformed. We can all give countless examples of this. Most Americans are sheeple, unable to think for themselves. They are content to follow, and many are too lazy to do the minimal research required to have an informed opinion. Their reliance on government or media sources for information makes them susceptible to manipulation. It's simply easier to be a sheeple.
As a student of the preparedness lifestyle, I cringe at the media's portrayal of preppers. Initially, the brunt of the ridicule was directed at survivalists. But with the success of National Geographic's Doomsday Preppers, the concept of being a prepper hit the mainstream. Now Preppers are the target of the media's derision. I have my opinion as to why that is the case, and it has its basis in politics. It is my opinion that the media is largely left-leaning and, as a result, does not embrace the self-sufficient lifestyle that is prepping. So, if you can't join them, beat them down--repeatedly. As a recent example, consider the media's dismantling of the Tea Party movement. I see similar attacks on preppers.
But, what if the Preppers are right?
What if?
EMP: An Electromagnetic Pulse Attack
A single EMP warhead exploded over the center of the US near St. Louis, Missouri could bring down the power grid all across the country. A major EMP event would take us back to a pre-industrial age, when the US population was just a fraction of what it is today. An America without power would essentially revert to the early 1800's, when a pre-industrial America was able to sustain a population of fewer than 100 million souls. An EMP attack would fulfill Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's dream that a world without America is conceivable.

If EMP doesn't scare the hell out of you, nothing will

I venture to say that Bobby Akart's EMP is the most thoroughly researched and documented book on the subject of electromagnetic pulse in existence. EMP should be included in every government national security entity's reference library and used as a text for all military academies program of instruction on the subject. It explains in details and with historical reference what an EMP is, the various ways it is produced, it's affect on electrical devices, and how it could bring about an end to civilization as we know it. Marvelous piece of writing Mr. Akart!

EMP- do you know what it is? What to do?

I read tons of apoc/dystopian books but not a lot of non fiction books. I have to say Bobby has me hooked on his books with real life scenarios that explain the many possible crises our world could have. EMP gives us an easily understood explanation of the powers behind and the reasons why such a catastrophe could happen. We live in a world where anything could happen, be informed, be ready.

A MUST READ!!

Another thorough and completely informative book by Mr. Akart. After his illuminating work in 'Cyber Warfare', this was a vital and incomparable work to outline the world that we currently live in...and the very real threats that Americans face. Was it shocking? Yes. Was it inflammatory and baseless? Absolutely NOT.

The entire book not only presents the facts as they are, but outlines what different arguments and opinions are out there. There is a very real threat that must be identified and resolved by the authorities in charge of such things!

The most wonderful part of this book is the culmination of the author's experience and views towards preparing ourselves for any possible outcome. Full of critical and necessary information that every American should read and keep close for future references. I definitely recommend this book!
