In June, 1951, Stanley M. Rumbough, Jr. and Charles F. Willis, Jr.—two WWII fighter pilots with no political experience or contacts—were frustrated with what they saw as “that mess in Washington” and were convinced that General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower was the ideal 1952 candidate for President of the United States. They did not know whether he was Republican or Democrat, had never communicated with the General, and were so naive that they didn’t even know how candidates were nominated. But they made it work. Within eight months, self-funded, with no help from the Republican Party (which at that point favored Senator Robert Taft), they had thousands of supporters active in 800 “Eisenhower for President Clubs” in 38 states and were instrumental in convincing Eisenhower to run for President.

“Citizens” brought creativity to the primaries and the Republican National Convention, including brass bands, teams of cheerleaders, and illuminated “IKE” branded barrage balloons floating in the nighttime skies. And . . . along the way . . . “Citizens”—NOT the formal party organization—participated in the creation and sponsorship of the first-ever TV spot commercials used in a Presidential election campaign.

“Citizens for Eisenhower” provides a roadmap for successful Presidential campaigns. Someone smart enough to use this model in politics could be the next Republican or Democratic President of the United States--unless, of course, he or she is the first Independent President of the United States.

Thinking outside the box works

Extremely interesting how these two young entrepeneurs managed to start a national movement to get Ike elected President. Maybe it can inspire some enthusiasts today to also think outside the established political box and put forward a fresh name to change the insider culture prevalent in our politics. In that case, this book can serve as an excellent guide how to accomplish this successfully !

The Eisenhower Era: A Metaphor of Optimism

At the half-century mark the Eisenhower era became a metaphor of domestic tranquility, peace, confidence and unquestioned American leadership in the world. The era following was bored by all that composure and set about to denounce pretty well everything that the previous generation valued most.

Rumbough's backwards glance is as much a retrospective of what America looked like and hoped for at that time, as it is a highly readable history of a campaign sans internet, computer and social media. How on earth did they manage such astounding success without a screen and keyboard?

Much is made of political maneuverings, strategies, end-runs and the rest of the panoply of a presidential campaign. All appropriate and expected - and hugely entertaining, besides. (Basically, Charles Willis and Stanley Rumbough made the political equivalent of stone soup.) But really what Rumbough captures - what the Eisenhower campaign itself rode to victory - is the mood of a people who were confident about themselves and their country and totally supportive of the modest military man who led the Allies to victory in the Second World War. And could be trusted to safely guide the nation from the White House.

This long look back is a wonderful blend of nuts-and-bolts details spiced with compelling atmosphere. One is left hoping that somewhere, sometime a similar man and national mood with rediscovered faith in itself, and pride, can ride another such wave to the Presidency. Perhaps Rumbough's book has lit the fuse.

A fascinating book!

Books about politics tend to be either dull or full of sensational (but often suspect) revelations; THIS fascinating book has just the right balance of facts and fun. Revelations? Yes, a few, because the story of "Citizens" has long been overlooked, although I found nothing that could be called "sensational." But so what? As one example of a revelation . . . the development of the first-ever presidential campaign TV spots, sponsored by "Citizens" . . . certainly interesting . . . and, it is interesting to note, one of the 1952 Eisenhower spots has been included in a recent TIME magazine list of the "Ten Best" presidential campaign spots, ever.

About the Author
Kelly M. Quintanilla is the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. She earned her Ph.D. in Communication from the Pennsylvania State University in 1994, joining the A&M-CC faculty that same year. She was a Professor of the Communication for 16 years, teaching courses in Business & Professional Communication, Teamwork & Leadership, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, and Public Speaking. Additionally, she served as Department Chair/Program Coordinator in Communication from 2000-2009. Over the years, Dr. Quintanilla has received awards for her teaching, service, advising, and scholarship. She has also worked as an executive coach and an organizational communication consultant for a variety of industries. Although she loves her career, her greatest love is spending time with her husband, Anthony and daughter, Logan on the sunny beaches of the South Texas.

Shawn T. Wahl (PhD, University of Nebraska, Lincoln) is a professor of communication and head of the Department of Communication in the School of Communication Studies at Missouri State University (MSU). Prior to MSU, he served as head of the Department of Communication, Mass Media, & Theatre at Angelo State University and as the director of graduate studies at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi. He is coauthor of Nonverbal Communication for a Lifetime, Business and Professional Communication: KEYS for Workplace Excellence, Persuasion in Your Life, Communication and Culture In Your Life, and Public Relations Principles: Strategies for Professional Success. Shawn has published articles in Communication Education, Communication Research Reports, Communication Teacher, Journal of Family Communication, and Basic Communication Course Annual. Shawn was a faculty participant in the National Communication Association Learning Outcomes in Communication project and is the 2016 President of the Central States Communication Association. In addition, Shawn has worked across the nation as a corporate trainer, communication consultant, and leadership coach in a variety of industries. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys spending time with his family and two Chinese pugs (Jake and Bentley).

Saved myself from paying $70

While my course required the newest edition, my teacher did not mind which edition we used. Chapter are different, but it's all the same information. The newer addition goes in-depth on some topics but you're really not missing out much. It is a great book to use as reference for the rest of your life.

not to mention that right now I cannot easily vote anywhere

this was an incredible read - CM Patha introduced such an interesting idea/concept - roaming is certainly something I am personally aware of. I'm a roamer and have such a hard time describing where I am from... not to mention that right now I cannot easily vote anywhere. These issues of identity, citizenship and governance are not going away. Truly enjoyed this book - and I think others in the roaming category will love it too! (and their families... friends... neighbours...)

Engaging and informative

Written in a confident and thoughtful tone, the book presents the idea of “roamers” -- a quickly growing demographic of people who choose to live and work abroad and all that entails for their individual lives and society at large.

Very well researched with frequent quotes fluidly inserted into the narrative, it's a convincing argument not only for the existence of this subculture but also for the way they are influencing the world, bringing up questions like "should they have more political clout as denizens of cities rather than nations?"

I thought the book fascinating not just for people who identify with the “roamer” moniker but also for anyone interested in social phenomena, policy makers, university professors, etc.

Immigration has always been a cornerstone of American's economic success. We live in the world where technology is changing our lifestyle and our expectations are changing. Fantastic as always

I cannot say enough good things about this series of books. Absolutely sweet love stories. This the third, and sadly final, in the Masters Unleashed series is by far the most tame. It's, gasp, borderline vanilla...but don't worry there is plenty of D/s loving to keep the freak flags flying.
Normally, a story about a virgin makes me roll my eyes, but it makes perfect sense for this book. It all plays out so well and the little h takes to the world of kink like a mermaid to water.
There is no big drama, as in no human trafficking, no secret government cover-ups, or crazy stalkers. It's real drama; with all the awkwardness, laughs, and misunderstandings that daily life brings when you are an incredibly wealthy and handsome Russian Dom who lets his grandmother choose a wife for him from a village in Russia.
It's fantastic and I hope that this writing team has more books to look forward to.

Super fun

I've read ask the other books in the series and had this on pre-order. Konstantin was interesting in the other books, but given time to develop, he was a lot of fun. Verushka is gorgeous. The development between them was well paced and reading about her being torn between being a "good girl" and enjoying her sexuality was brilliant. People are sometimes afraid to look too closely where religion is concerned. It was addressed very well here. The sex scenes were wonderfully written, as always. A brilliant read. Can't wait for another installment. Well done, ladies.

Varushka is a darling and so perfect for bad boy, Konstantin. She's sunshine and happiness, and a natural submissive. She makes Konstantin happy and fulfilled. They fall deeply in love but things are challenging, especially where her father is concerned. But this a romantic story of true love and they find their HEA. It's a feel-good story that will warm your heart.

BE A POSITIVE PARENT

If there is one truth about how to parent, I would say that there are lots of approaches to choose from but none that can be universally applied. Vergara is inspired by her own daughter. Her advice is to let your children give you guidance so there is less of a struggle. Her other points are to lead by example and follow your heart ,and don't automatically say no but involve the child in decision making. Manage your own emotions first, adapt to each situation, and have a positive outlook on life. Be aware that our children are growing up in different times. Stay consistent and follow your own advice. Forgive and be wiling to forgive. The author briefly outlines what to expect in different life stages.

While not all parents will agree, there is no doubt that Vergara gives parents of children of all ages a lot to think about and consider.

Parents should read this book!

This book really hit home with me on so many levels. I am with my kids more than most parents, because I home school. While the little kids and babies did not apply to me (my kids are teens) there is still so much to learn from this book. I loved the Imagination section. My youngest loves to create, draw, she has worlds in her head that she could sit with dolls and stuffed animals and play out entire scenes. As a kid, I was more active and really didn't have much time to imagine, but after reading this book, I realize how glad I am that I let her just play in her world. I also have a teen that is extremely driven, but has almost no imagination. However, for him, the independence chapter was so useful. I recommend this book to all parents. It gives a different view point over the other books.

One of the best books on parenting I've read so far.

I acknowledge that parenting has its bad moments, but I can’t imagine being happy without my child. It is truly difficult raising a child, and I don’t even understand why the way my parents raised and effectively disciplined me, just don’t seem to work with kids today. Well, this book helps me understand that modern children require parents to take them modern approaches. I like how the author introduced unique steps to make parenting easier. The book is smartly written by a hands- on mom. To all new mothers and soon to be moms, this book is perfect. I love this book, it’s beautiful.

About the Author
Susan W. Gray has been a member of the Barry University faculty since 1980. She earned a BA from Caldwell College for Women, an MSW at Rutgers University, an Ed.D. at Nova Southeastern University, and an MBA and Ph.D. from Barry University. Dr. Gray is a licensed clinical social worker and brings to Barry a diverse clinical practice background. Her professional interests include clinical supervision, licensure and professional regulation, community mental health, and professional practice in rural areas.

Marilyn Zide was a professor at Barry University, where she taught full time. In addition, she maintained a private practice and also provided agency-based consultation and training workshops in her areas of expertise which included solution-focused therapy, cultural diversity/sensitivity, and bereavement group-work.

Author’s Foreword This book is unfinished. The Filipino people shall finish it for me. I wrote this volume very, very slowly. 1 could have done with it In three months after my defection from the conjugal dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos on February 20.1975. Instead, I found myself availing of every excuse to slow it down. A close associate, Marcelino P. Sarmiento, even warned me, “Baka mapanis ’yan." (Your book could become stale.) While I availed of almost any excuse not to finish the manuscript of this volume, I felt the tangible voices of a muted people back home in the Philippines beckoning to me from across the vast Pacific Ocean. In whichever way I turned, I was confronted by the distraught images of the Filipino multitudes crying out to me to finish this work, lest the frailty of human memory -- or any incident a la Nalundasan – consign to oblivion the matters I had in mind to form the vital parts of this book. It was as if the Filipino multitudes and history itself were surging in an endless wave presenting a compelling demand on me to San Francisco, California perpetuate the personal knowledge I have gained on the infamous machinations of Ferdinand E. Marcos and his overly ambitious wife, Imelda, that led to a day of infamy in my country, that Black Friday on September 22, 1972, when martial law was declared as a means to establish history’s first conjugal dictatorship. The sense of urgency in finishing this work was also goaded by the thought that Marcos does not have eternal life and that the Filipino people are of unimaginable forgiving posture. I thought that, if I did not perpetuate this work for posterity, Marcos might unduly benefit from a Laurelian statement that, when a man dies, the virtues of his past are magnified and his faults are reduced to molehills. This is a book for which so much has been offered and done by Marcos and his minions so that it would never see the light of print. Now that it is off the press. I entertain greater fear that so much more will be done to prevent its circulation, not only in the Philippines but also in the United States. But this work now belongs to history. Let it speak for itself in the context of developments within the coming months or years. Although it finds great relevance in the present life of the present life of the Filipinos and of Americans interested in the study of subversion of democratic governments by apparently legal means, this work seeks to find its proper niche in history which must inevitably render its judgment on the seizure of government power from the people by a lame duck Philippine President. If I had finished this work immediately after my defection from the totalitarian regime of Ferdinand and Imelda, or after the vicious campaign of the dictatorship to vilify me in July-August. 1975, then I could have done so only in anger. Anger did influence my production of certain portions of the manu-script. However, as I put the finishing touches to my work, I found myself expurgating it of the personal venom, the virulence and intemperate language of my original draft. Some of the materials that went into this work had been of public knowledge in the Philippines. If I had used them, it was with the intention of utilizing them as links to heretofore unrevealed facets of the various ruses that Marcos employed to establish his dictatorship. Now, I have kept faith with the Filipino people. I have kept my rendezvous with history. I have, with this work, discharged my obligation to myself, my profession of journalism, my family and my country. I had one other compelling reason for coming out with this work at the great risks of being uprooted from my beloved country, of forced separation from my wife and children and losing their affection, and of losing everything I have in my name in the Philippines — or losing life itself. It is that I wanted to make a public expiation for the little influence that I had . . . .(more inside)

There should be a way to have it republished so that the crimes and misdeeds of those monsters are NOT forgotten since the Marcoses tried to buy every copy extant at the time and even sent agents to all the libraries that had copies and swiped those copies. I don't know if it's availalbe now in eBook form, but whatever few, hard copies around are rare and mostly in the hands of people who saw through the Marcos' scam early on.

Waltzing with a dictator was a better read, but this was written from the heart of a patriot

The author thought the Filipinos will complete the story as he would like to, but if he is still alive, he would be deeply disappointed. He was not alone anyway to think and believe that Filipinos are worth dying for. Maybe less than 5% of the Filipino population have read this book that should have been a requirement for Filipino students.

Provides a up close and personal view of the evils of the Marcos regime. The writer suffered for being the whistle blower with his son tortured and killed in presence, his eyes gouged out and beaten to death. Tibo Mijares subsequently died for revealing the truth. Its a must read not only for Filipinos but for those who labor under the yoke of tyranny.
