Déjà Vu won the Israeli Nanowrimo contest, raising these comments from the judges: "A real 'page turner,'… honest and free from self-righteousness… centered around a fascinating concept. The writer has a rare talent for telling a compelling story."

Review
Critique of Dr. Ruthie Kalman, head of Dimona Library

The term déjà vu (a French term meaning "already seen") refers to a phenomenon in which a person feels that what happens to him at a given moment has already happened before.
Michal Hartstein, author of Déjà Vu uses not only this situation, but also the opposite situation, jamais vu, which means "never seen." In this situation, one feels as if he is encountering a word, person or situation for the first time when, in fact, he knew them before.

Rose, the heroine, wakes up in hospital at the age of sixteen after a period of unconsciousness, having suffered a trauma to the head in an accident. Her parents and her family are delighted to see her return to herself, but it gradually turns out that she is suffering from amnesia and remembers nothing of her life before the accident. Her mind has blanked out her parents, whom she doesn't recognize, her sisters, her two friends from childhood, Inbal and Daria, her boyfriend, David, and even herself. But she does remember language and mathematics, in which she excelled.

Overtime, she becomes reacquainted with the people around her, but she fails to reconnect with David, her boyfriend. To her, he is a stranger, and they separate. Her main circle is the one she has with her two best friends.
All three have been friends since kindergarten, and each has her own character: Daria is characterized by a kind of condescension and indulgence, while Inbal is modest and frugal. "I soon realized that I was the glue of the trio. Daria and Inbal actually had to share me. Alone, they couldn't be friends. A large void separated their two different approaches to life. Occasionally I wondered if they could even tolerate each other." (End of chapter 1.)

The jealousy and love between the three of them sometimes reaches neatcrisis levels as they mature. Meanwhile, Rose marries Amir, but doesnot flinch from sharing with us her growing feelings of envy toward her friends while they all marry and settle down: jealousy of Daria's wealth; jealousy of what seems to be a perfect love between Inbal and David (Rose's former boyfriend); and her frustration with an early pregnancy that blocks the career to which she aspired. As someone who has always excelled academically before, she feels dissatisfied.
Sixteen years after her accident, she goes through an event that changes her life around once again.

The novel explores several modes of knowledge - of someone who remembers his past and cannot tell what is in store for tomorrow, of someone who remembers nothing of his past and does not know what will happen to him, and of someone who knows the future with pinpoint accuracy. All this is accompanied by questions about fate: how much is a person free to decide and determine his own fate? And how much of fate is determined in advance?

Hats off to Michal Hartstein for her remarkable book and for the fascinating concept.

feels pretty mundane and real
By Pascal
Quite a well crafted book by Michal Hartstein.
The first half, when she tells the story of Rose's accident and her consequent loss of memory, feels pretty mundane and real, the reader will invariably relate with Rose's self doubt and insecurities.
The character definition is flawless. The three protagonist couples emerge easily from the pages as does their dynamic to one another, but that dynamic gets shuffled in the second part of the book, and that takes you by total surprise. What a twist!
Somehow the author allows you to adapt smoothly to the new landscape and takes you to a level rarely accomplished by any writer. It almost forces the reader to look inside his/her own self and wonder what it might have been had I made different choices in life.
What if I had a second chance.
Only gave it 4 stars because the end falls a little flat. The story ends too soon in my opinion. Could have gone two more chapters, at least.
Nevertheless, put this one in the "must read" category.
I certainly see the makings of a movie here.

I enjoyed reading this book very much
By Ron, PA
I enjoyed reading this book very much. The plot is flowing and I read it almost continuously.
It is a modern story, presenting our intensive, challenging and demanding society The main idea is mind opening, what could have happened if we got an opportunity for "second chance" in life? How our life would turn and developed differently?.

Make me continue thinking long after I finished reading.

Fascinating and absorbing.
By Julie
Michal Harstein is a really talented author. She drew me in so quickly that, suddenly, I couldn't put the book down. Deja Vu is a real page turner and very cleverly constructed. The main characters are so full of human weaknesses that I defy any reader to not see a bit of themselves in there somewhere! I could see this as a movie.
