The study of Assamese literature has so far been in terms of the history of the Assamese language. This book is a history of the narratives written in Assamese language and its relation to the process of region formation. The literature dealt with ranges from pre-colonial chronicles, ballads and drama to modern genres of fiction and critical writing in Assamese language. Taking the Brahmaputra valley and Assamese literature as case studies, the author attempts to link literature, its nature and use, to processes of region formation, arguing that such a study needs to take the context of historical geography into consideration.
The book views region formation in north-east India as a dialectical process, that is, the dialectic between the shared and the distinct in inter-group and community relations. It borrows an anthropological approach to study written narratives and cultures so as to locate such narratives in specific processes of region formation.

Imaging space and perceiving space are two categories of forming the framework of a priori thinking. In this book, the author has beautifully craved out the duality through the interlocking of culture, folklore, and myth within the spatial perceptions created by language. The book begins with the geographical depictions of Northeast, India in general and Assam in particular, so as to avoid the art of illusion often brought about by the historical interpretations. As the chapter progresses, one can see that power dynamics too infringes in spatial complexities having its effect in the language and literature and the experienced space. The author has broaden the scope of the book by not confining with the social history of Assam but also building an analysation of the intellectual history of the region. All in all this book is useful for student of literature, history, anthropology and other disciplines who would like to expand their knowledge of places and counter places with regard to language and literature.
