A great accomplishment indeed

I write as a Roman Catholic trained in philosophy and theology. I recommend this delightful read as a true spiritual journey. From the first pages, Dr. Lenz surfs the reader right into a wonderful spiritual ambience. Agree or not with every point in his doctrine, one cannot escape a heightened sense of the divine. That is a big gift to our secular culture. Dr. Lenz's work will undoubtedly help bridge a gap, and East will come closer to West and vice versa. That is true development of doctrine, a great accomplishment indeed.

Surfing the Himalayas is one of the greatest spiritual adventures ever written. It can be easy compared to The Celestine Prophesy, or any book by Carlos Castaneda. Master Fwap's enlightening humor takes your mind into a higher level of awareness at the turn of each page. This is an adventure that should be enjoyed by all.

Snowboarding becomes the vehicle for bringing to life Master Fwap's explanations of such deep subjects as karma, opening the third eye, the secret of the Rae Chorze-Fwaz, earth's cycles and auric patterning, astral travel, and more.

The Best Book on Kalachakra?

This book is an excellent resource and can be highly recommended to those preparing to take a Kalachakra initiation, such as the upcoming one in Toronto, April-May 2004. HH the Dalai Lama gives one or two Kalachakra initiations every year, so this book should be very valuable in future as well.
The book is comprised of two parts: an introduction by Jeffrey Hopkins (first 150 pages) and the commentary/teaching of the Dalai Lama throughout the actual initation (the rest of the book), plus a few texts on 6-session guruyoga and a sadhana at the end.
The introduction is excellent, explaining the sutra and tantra path, with a wonderful chapter on emptiness that is very clear and concise, and one of the best explications I have seen! This section alone is worth the price of the book. It explains the Kalachakra mandala (and there are some good color glossy photos inside) with all the deities as well.
The second section is even more incredible, as this is the actual text of what HH the Dalai Lama explained throughout the actual initiation. This would be very valuable for those preparing for such an initiation, or perhaps wanting to go back to understand it more deeply.
Combined, these two sections make this book invaluable. It is also beautifully made, with a great glossy cover, very durable, and glossy pages that are nice to read. Treasure it!
Also recommended: Glenn Mullin's "The Practice of Kalachakra", Alexander Berzin's book on Kalachakra, and "Highest Yoga Tantra" by Daniel Cozort.

Tenzin Gyatso. Kalachakra Tantra Rite of Initiation rules!

This is an absolute must have if you either have attended or plan to attend the Kalachakra initiation. It has the text of the actual previous initiation given in Wisconsin in 1981. When I attended the Bloomington initiation in 1999, we followed the text almost word for word. Sometimes it's hard to understand the translator over earphones, but with book in hand, I had no problem at all. And it's essential to read ahead of time so that the experience has meaning. In addition, this book has been a friend and companion in daily practice since the initiation. (If you're new to the process, part of what you sign up for is to practice six times a day for the rest of your life.) The text has the actual daily practices as well. Hopkins' introduction is the equivalent of a college course. I thought, arrogantly, that I was prepared by having read a few books on Kalachakra and having practiced other deity yogas for several years. Only after studying did I find how much I have to learn. I've read this book many times, and will continue to do so. It takes on more sophistocation as I grow in my practice. My usual reaction on re-reading is like, "Oh, no, that's what I vowed to do--wish I had realized it at the time."

Clear, Profound, Essential

This book is the perfect reference to begin with if one is engaging in the practice of the Kalachakra Tantra. The profound complexity of the practice with its visualizations of mandalas, hundreds of deities adorned in myriad ornaments, in the ten directions with their surroundings, who is doing what, why they are doing it, what is happening at any given moment in the practice...It requires explanation in detail, and Jeffrey Hopkins along with Kundun are masterful.

That said, even more essential to the practice of ANY Highest Yoga Tantra is to do so WITH THE GUIDANCE OF A QUALIFIED GURU WHO IS WELL VERSED IN THE PRACTICE! No book, no number of books, can replace the guidance of your Teacher. It is my kind lama who required me to read this book, and I go to him with my questions and thoughts. The Lightning Vehicle is fraught with pitfalls for the unwary and unwise-and so after being initiated or Empowered, a wise and kind teacher is essential to the practice.

For those of us who do this as our daily practice, this book will be completely invaluable.

About the Author
Dr. Jarik Conrad is an award-winning author, entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and executive coach. He grew up in public housing in East St. Louis, IL, which has been described as the most distressed small city in America. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, two master's degrees from Cornell University, and a doctor of education degree from the University of North Florida. He is also a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), a SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), a certified intercultural sensitivity expert, and a certified emotional intelligence expert. A must read for Human Resouce Professionals and Employment Lawyers

As an employment lawyer who deals every day with the issue of race in the workplace, I found "The Fragile Mind", by Dr. Jarik Conrad, to be one of the first books to recognize and cogently explain the divergent views that people of different backgrounds bring to conflict, in the workplace and in other situations. I highly recommend it, particularly to human resource and legal professionals who must regularly deal with such conflict.

Dr. Conrad begins with an explanation of his own background in East St. Louis, and explores the way he reacted to the conditions there, as well as the way his relatives and friends reacted. He then moves to a discussion of a model for understanding why some succeed, as he did, whereas others are dragged down. His model is not just based in sociology, but also in psychology and the physiology of the human mind. In combination, he presents a model that makes sense. While the focus is on race, his model can have application on a broader scale.

Providing a basis for readers to understand these issues is very important, but Dr. Conrad goes further. He provides an opportunity for the reader to better address the conscious and subconscious barriers that stand in the way of success in our society. He does so in an interesting, balanced and clear way. Quite an achievement.

Great Thoughts on a Tough Topic

Recently, I had the opportunity to read an important book, "The Fragile Mind," by Jarik Conrad. Dr. Conrad came up the hard way. He was born in East St. Louis IL. I know East St Louis. I have often described it as the worst combination of urban and rural poverty that I have ever seen.

Jarik Conrad grew up in a housing project there. He went on to receive a BA from the University of Illinois, an MBA and MILR from Cornell, and an EdD from the University of North Florida. He runs Conrad Consulting Group, helping organizations solve complex human relations challenges.

In "The Fragile Mind," he takes on a big subject: race in America. In the Preface he says, (when speaking of America's declining global competitiveness...) "Rarely is there mention of one of the most significant threats to our nation's future - America's troubling racial disparities in education, employment, income, wealth, incarceration, health care and housing."

Dr. Conrad deals with these sensitive topics in an even handed manner in "The Fragile Mind." And, in my opinion, he does a great job. He says,
"Perhaps nothing is more complex in America than race relations. While there has been substantial progress since the Civil rights Act of 1964, people of color, especially Blacks have yet to experience proportionate levels of economic success. For this to happen, we must reject the misguided "either/or" notion in popular discourse that claims either outright discrimination by Whites, or a lack or personal responsibility by black is the cause of the sobering disparities. We must recognize that we are all complicit in this problem, and the culprit is our fragile minds. As brilliant as the human mind is, its design sometimes works against us - particularly when dealing with people from different backgrounds. The mind's fragility has resulted in individual, institutional and structural bias by some Whites in America, as well as complacency and irresponsibility by some Blacks to perpetuate disparities between the two groups. The answers to Black and White are hardly ever black and white, they are usually gray."

Dr. Conrad uses this measured tone throughout as he wrestles with the complexities of race in twenty first century America. He provides an historical framework on the roots of disparity in our society and explains how disparities are perpetuated. Then he offers a new approach to inclusion.

All in all, I found this book to be fascinating reading. As I've mentioned above, I appreciate the measured tone Dr. Conrad takes throughout the discussion. I'm sure his arguments will upset both a few Blacks and a few Whites as well as a few on the left and a few on the right. However, I think he has written a book that we all should read. In today's America, we cannot continue to ignore disparities based on race.

The essays are intended for two audiences. One is citizens of Botswana and students of the country who are interested in reflecting on the extent to which rapid modernization since independence has transformed social relations. The other audience is readers intent on obtaining a keener sense of ways a modernizing African society is different from the developed world. This latter group includes students and travelers who want to consider some underlying forces they may observe with a sustained immersion in a developing country, and particularly Botswana.

The discussion in each essay is founded largely on experiences the author has had in a wide range of contexts. He seeks to weave these experiences into one or more generalizations about the way in which Botswana society works in a particular environment. In the process he raises questions about prevailing perceptions that the developed world has of less-developed countries. He admits in the course of most essays to have himself once held some version of these developed-world misperceptions.

The topics covered are ones which are highly contested in both public and private discussions within Botswana. The specific focus of the various essays are as follows:

The author is a PhD-trained political scientist. He began field research in Botswana in 1970. He returned regularly for the next thirty-five years for varying periods of time, the longest of which was 14 months. As a researcher in these years he traveled over most of the country and met a wide range of the citizenry from top executives to hunter-gatherers on the Kalahari. Beginning in January of 2006, he served for four years as the first Director of International Programs at the University of Botswana. In this position he was able to observe the internal dynamics of a major social institution as well as the misconceptions of visiting students and scholars. In the course of his career, the author has also visited many other African countries and engaged in field projects in Ghana, Nigeria, Lesotho, and Zambia. However, Botswana is his second home.

A good reflection of the author's experience and understanding of life in Botswana. The essays are useful for readers who are interested in learning about the Tswana society, and it raises many scholarly issues to pursue. In addition, for the locals, it serves as a mirror on some of the practices-whether bad or good, and which are worthy to either disprove or accept as reality. In the end, to truly appreciate and find out why things unfold as they do in Botswana, it is important for one to visit and live as part of the society. I commend the author for having done just that.

For anyone in any profession with considerable cross cultural experience it will be easy to recognize the depth and authenticity

These essays are excellently written, are succinct yet highly and efficiently informative, and give much evidence of authority/expertise blended with appropriate modesty in recognition of the limits of understanding we all face when spending even many years in such cultural-linguistic environments than our native one. The almost conversational style invites thoughtful imagined interaction on the part of the reader with Professor Holm. For anyone in any profession with considerable cross cultural experience it will be easy to recognize the depth and authenticity of the writing as well as the critical thinking applied by the author to his reflection on his experiences and to his own analysis of his impressions and conclusions. To those new to cross cultural work, these essays are especially valuable as guidelines to an open-to-learning, non-superior attitude so essential to establishing a relationship of trust with local colleagues and friends as a foundation for understanding the mores, manners, and cultural assumptions and idiosyncrasies that open the doors to acceptance, shared experiences, and insights that go well beneath the surface. As the author exemplifies, that takes serious time, effort and sincerity.

Valuable insights from a thoughtful and careful observer

This is a great source of helpful information for those who will be traveling in, working in, or studying Botswana. It provides valuable and important insights into this wonderful country and its people. Professor Holm has developed many close friendships there over the years. As a political scientist he is very skilled at seeing social and cultural patterns in them. His observations include both scholarly assessments and warm descriptions of individual personal encounters. His essays convey his insights in a respectful and thoughtful manner.
I wish this book had been available when I started working in Botswana. I recommend it highly for anyone wishing to learn more about the subtle distinctions in tone and style that are extremely helpful in developing positive relationships in a new environment.

Out, Not In

When I first read the Sandberg book that this takes its name from, I was excited.

Basically, here was a feminism that someone can do on your own. No mass movement needed.

But I was thinking in context of the world that Sheryl brought us into. It was one of privilege and one that couldn’t be changed, so it must be navigated. It’s actually a really pessimistic book, and one that only will work for the educated white-collar classes who have some say in the terms of their own exploitation under capitalism –those so deep in their own exploitation that they don’t see their chains.

So it has been refreshing to see antidotes to the leaning in. I first saw it in part of Aschoff’s book “New Profits of Capital” (cited in this work), and in other more radical publications that don’t take the establishment view for granted. I came across this text because the Verso blog called it one of the best books of 2015 (Even though it wasn’t published in the states until early 2016, which to me is a recommendation to get into publishing and criticism if only for early access to crucial texts). I like this book. It is a call for the mass movements and a justification for them. It touches on that other book early on, but becomes more general on what is needed for women to do (still!) in terms of making the world work better in gender terms. It is a short but meaningful read, and one that should be undertaken. It will help explain why feminism is necessary (still!)

Lisa Ferland is a US citizen who has lived abroad in Sweden since 2012, working as a public health consultant. Knocked Up Abroad is enlightening, fascinating, and fun. I read it on my Kindle and could not put it down, even though I am long from my days of bearing children.

In this day of companies moving abroad (just heard of another today) there will be many more opportunities for young couples to move with them.. and the rewards, as described in some detail here, can be immeasurable.

But whether you move abroad or not, this is a great, reassuring, thoughtful book about childbirth, travel, getting acquainted with people who might have different customs, and enjoying the experience.

Brave Moms, Wonderful Stories

What a bunch of brave women! A collection of very eye-opening birth stories from moms around the world, Knocked Up Abroad brings to light all the different cultural "norms" ex-pat moms experience when they're not in the U.S. and creating families. I'm just envious of their maternity leaves, hah, has to be better than the U.S.! Funny, poignant and a call back to my own children's birth- will be buying this as gifts and recommending to all parents everywhere!

A great read and many women I want to know better!

I stand in awe of the many ways that women bear and raise children around the world. Even more do I appreciate going from your own language and comfort zone to an unknown one. Ferland has assembled a wonderful collection of women and their stories, ranging from one-hour deliveries to bearing twins that have wildly different delivery needs. A wonderful collection!
