And they lived happily ever after!

This is the story of two wonderful, caring doctors who found each other in the wilds of Africa while taking care of the poor adults and children in a refugee camp in Chad. Robert was a major in the British Royal Army and was a surgeon extraordinaire. He was also grandson to the Queen of England and 7th in line for the throne, but Maddy had no idea he was a prince. She did know he was hiding something that would prevent them being together and she also knew she was not the type of woman to be happy with less than that. Because she was in love with Robert and she thought there was no chance for them to be together, Maddy left the camp and went home to Montana for a month to rest. Maddy found out who Robert actually was when she saw his picture in a magazine with a beautiful woman on the airplane taking her back to Africa. When she returned Robert was gone and she was even more miserable. When they did finally run into each other again Robert was shocked at the way Maddy looked. She had lost so much weight and had dark circles under her eyes. He knew then she was as unhappy as he was. Later, much later, Robert said, ""our princesses need to have good hearts, be brave and true, care about others, and be generous and tough." I think this statement described a certain prince, too. You will want to read this story to find out how they got from miserable to their happily ever after. The characters are very engaging and grabbed me from the very beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

Royal Secrets is my first Kristin Frasier book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Maddy and Robert are fantastic characters, both very compassionate people who care deeply about their patients. I always like it when the man in these books is a caring, realistic guy who still knows how to stand up for his love, and Robert hit all the right buttons for me. And Maddy! She's wonderful! And her secret is... Well! No spoilers, but you're going to be on the edge of your seat with this one :o

The HEA is perfect, too. Satisfying, believable, and thoroughly deserved. Well done, Kristin and Clara. I can't wait for another book from both these authors!

Being from the UK and a royalist, I loved this story even more.
Robert Haven, 7th in line to the throne is a surgeon working for the British Army. He travels to Africa to help where it is most needed. There he meets Maddy Hawkins, a nurse helping with the sick children. Attraction is an understatement . It is instant WOW.
Maddy works with Angel , Amy and Shane using limited resources. Love their friendship and camerarderie, but Maddy needs more in her life. When she meets Robert she is tongue tied as he is so hot. They realise that life is short and make the best of their time together.
This story is full of smiles, laughter, anxiety, heartache, hope and dreams.........
Loved it all and would love to hear more about Maddy and sexy Robert.

A nice introduction to the subject. But, in this Kindle edition, very few photos or illustrations are included. This detracts from the purpose of the book, which is supposed to be an "illustrated" introduction to this fascinating subject. However, much can still be learned from the scholarly text. A must for the specialized library of anyone with a strong interest in this subject.

This title was purchased as a referece work for an MSW thesis. The text is well laid out, covers issues relevant to both policy and practice, and provides an excellent description of the study on which it is based.
This is one of only six solid texts identifiable that dealt with non-traditional families as a resource for special needs children awaiting adoption.
An excellent resource, and worth the money (even if you're living on student loans).

Insightful Read

Alabamians like to think that if they don't tell their own story, somebody else will tell it for them. That's another way of saying nobody can get it right who isn't wedded to the prevailing myth that Alabama has a heart full of love for all its citizens regardless of race, creed or ethnicity. On our license plates it's displayed for all to see: a big, red compassionate heart, the Heart of Dixie. Once again an insider, Don Nolte, shows clearly and objectively that the Heart of Dixie is, in fact, heartless, that change in Alabama is superficial and that the old prejudices still thrive in less obvious but more devious forms. If you want to know just how devious the forms of prejudice can really be, read this book. You won't be disappointed.

Andrew C. Katen is an educator, geopolitical analyst, and geologist. He has taught middle school and college, as well as published and presented on various topics related to geopolitics and natural resources. Andrew holds an M.S. in national security studies and B.S. degrees in geology and biology. Chaturanga is his first novel.

Terrific debut novel from an exciting new author

Never pandering and always brisk, always informative but never dull, Chaturanga, Mr. Katen's debut novel, is an exquisitely balanced exercise in educational entertainment, a gripping and mysterious thrill-ride through the sands of time and place. It is no mere textbook, nor some high-calorie brain candy. Instead, it is a deftly paced work of fiction so fluid, so fun, that one is excused for failing to note how much information is being unpacked as the pages unfold.

Our hero is Patrick Eaton, and like many of us, he is a dreamer. He yearns to strike out for the frontier, to discover for himself the fabulous adventures lived by previous generations of Eaton men. But Patrick is trapped in school, trapped in suburbia, and seemingly trapped in an era when all the adventures have already occurred, and when all the great lands have already been explored.

It just doesn't seem fair. And Patrick wonders: Could adventure itself be a relic of a bygone era?

Thankfully, the answer is a resounding "no"…for Patrick and the readers of Chaturanga alike.

Patrick gets his wish for adventure when he is caught up in an ancient struggle for international resources, land and power. One of my favorite novels

After reading Chaturanga, I find the story quite fascinated and excited. It is about 14-year old Patrick doing adventure travels through Central Area where his Great Grandfather went decades ago. It is full of adventure, especially for 14 year old boy who see people and places in Central Asian countries at the same time he looks for treasures per information in his Great Grandfather's documents. The novel is well blend with history, geography, geology, archeology, politics, and cultures. Mr. Katen even uses pronunciation guide of names of places such as countries and communities.This makes novel an excellent educational material for young people from 16 to adult to read. I enjoy reading the novel because while the story is fiction, I learn a great deal about the history, geography, archeology, and culture of Central Asia.That is my kind of novel that I like to read. Mr. Katan is an excellent writer.

Why I just bought thirty copies of Chaturanga

I was one of the lucky people who read the pre-publication copy. Unbelievable! The author penned a brilliantly-written and gripping adventure story for young readers using the global oil & gas sectors as a backdrop. However, as an adult, I couldn't put it down! I learned much about Central Asian geopolitics and 'the Game' - a centuries-long East vs West 'chess match' for influence and control. I am a professional energy expert and bought thirty copies to send to my energy friends with adolescent children, who are certainly not learning this fascinating stuff in their classrooms. I cannot rave enough about this book and can promise one thing: you'll never look at inter-generational relationships or Central Asia or the energy sector or geopolitics in the same way as before. These autobiographies, according to Garcia, exemplify the tensions and contradictions inherent in identity. In their presentation of the self we see the rejection not only of essentialized notions of ethnic authenticity but also of any conception of an ethnic self that is not also communally derived. The image reflected in the mirror of autobiography also reminds us that consciousness itself is altered by our reading, and that the construction of modern ethnicity is shaped to a considerable extent by print culture.

It is what has driven the global economy. The benefits of socialism cannot be refuted either. That is why the debate is so compelling.
The overused phrase, “give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime” also has merits. We need to assume nothing during the education process that teaches men, women and children to “fish”. We need to understand that in today’s complicated world the process of teaching men women and children to fish is a process that may take time. Not everyone has the ability to fish while learning. The reason why we should help people that can’t pull themselves up by their own bootstraps is that it is the right thing to do. Helping people while they learn is more humane and costs less than sweeping them under the carpet.
Let’s put the debate of Capitalism and Socialism to rest. Turning a blind eye to people who have no ability to “fish” is no longer acceptable. A layer of socialism where we teach men, women and children to “fish” fueled by Capitalism for those who take personal responsibility and want all that capitalism provides can coexist and flourish.
Let’s move the debate forward to renewable systems that prepare and plan for the next thousand years.

About the Author
Joel Deane was born in 1969 and grew up in regional Victoria and Melbourne. He had numerous poems published between 1990 and 1995, but then moved to California and, although he continued writing, fell silent until 2004. Subterranean Radio Songs, which is Joel's first collection of poetry and won the IP Picks Award for Best Poetry in 2005, tells the story of those silent years. Joel has worked as a newspaper reporter at The Sun News-Pictorial in Melbourne, a TV and Internet producer in San Francisco, and a press secretary and speechwriter for the Australian Labor Party. He is the author of the IP Picks 2004 winning novel, Another, and is currently speechwriter to the Premier of Victoria, Steve Bracks. Joel lives in Melbourne with his wife and two children.

A well written history of Labour in power in Victoria but...

A well written history of Labour in power in Victoria under two Premiers. The first-person account takes the reader inside the ALP during a highly successful period, especially during the Bracks era. Deane shares some valuable insights into the dynamics of politics, both state and Federal.
However, the book has some glaring omissions:
- there is no mention of the public controversies involving of some Ministers such as Peter Batchelor, Andre Heremeyer and Tim Holding. These were significant issues at the time.
- there is little analysis of the loss of the 2010 election.
Still a worthwhile read for students of political history.

About the Author

For more than 45 years, William John Cox has written extensively on law, politics, philosophy, and the human condition. During that time, he vigorously pursued a career in law enforcement, public policy, and the law.

As a police officer, he was an early leader in the “New Breed” movement to professionalize law enforcement. Cox wrote the Policy Manual of the Los Angeles Police Department and the introductory chapters of the Police Task Force Report of the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals, which continues to define the role of the police in America.

As an attorney, Cox worked for the U.S. Department of Justice to implement national standards and goals, prosecuted cases for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, and operated a public interest law practice primarily dedicated to the defense of young people.

Professionally, Cox volunteered pro bono services in several landmark legal cases. In 1979, he filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of all citizens directly in the U.S. Supreme Court alleging that the government no longer represented the voters who elected it. As a remedy, Cox urged the Court to require national policy referendums to be held in conjunction with presidential elections.

In 1981, representing a Jewish survivor of Auschwitz, Cox investigated and successfully sued a group of radical right-wing organizations which denied the Holocaust. The case was the subject of the Turner Network Television motion picture, Never Forget.

Cox later represented a secret client and arranged the publication of almost 1,800 photographs of ancient manuscripts that had been kept from the public for more than 40 years. A Facsimile Edition of the Dead Sea Scrolls was published in November 1991.

Cox concluded his legal career as a Supervising Trial Counsel for the State Bar of California. There, he led a team of attorneys and investigators which prosecuted attorneys accused of serious misconduct and criminal gangs engaged in the illegal practice of law. He retired in 2007.

Continuing to concentrate on political and social issues since his retirement, Cox has lectured, taught classes at the university level, and produced a series of articles and books. His primary initiative is the United States Voters' Rights Amendment (www.usvra.us & www.y4vra.org).

A Must Read for All Citizens

Transforming America: A Voter’s Bill of Rights is the outgrowth of a serious attempt over many years by William John Cox to come to grips with perhaps the most vexing and challenging problem facing the United States: How to govern the nation by electing representatives from and of the people to enact necessary rules and laws. Cox has long been involved in political activism as a lawyer, author, and citizen.

Starting at the beginning of the United States in Transforming America, he spells out in clear terms and language diverse events, political actions, and Supreme Court decisions leading up to the current state of affairs. He uses his considerable experience, skills, and talents as a lawyer and writer in this book to comprehensively analyze from an historical perspective how the US got in the predicament it is in today, and what is needed to cause necessary changes to bring about transformation.

Cox discusses the writing of the Constitution by Madison, Jefferson and others, reviewing general political causes and concerns existing in the 18th Century that caused the US Constitution to be written as it was, leaving it a work in progress, imperfect, incomplete, requiring periodic changes, as Madison, Jefferson and others knew full well when they released it to we the people.

Of major concern to William John Cox and millions of US citizens today, a concern exacerbated by the horror of the Bush II-Gore election of 2000, is the Electoral College and the way elections for US president are conducted. At the top of the list of recommendations Cox makes in Transforming America is eliminating the Electoral College and amending the constitution to eliminate the pernicious effects of the oxymoronic Supreme Court case Citizens United of 2010, to, among other things, cut in stone in simple words for all time the truism that corporations are not people and shall not be allowed to manipulate, bully, and debilitate the election and effects of presidents and other representatives with outlandish bribes, euphemistically known as campaign contributions.

Transforming America starts out with a presentation of the United States Voting Rights Amendment, the USVRA, that Cox wrote and proposes, which he has made public for several years on a website he created at usvra.us. The book winds up discussing how to amend the US Constitution, how amendments get considered and proposed in Congress, and how they are ratified by the states, with a lot of history in between.

Transforming America should be required reading for all US citizens to qualify them for their adult responsibility to vote in a representative democracy. Most readers will be surprised to learn in this book, as I was, that no US citizen, regardless of sex, age, race, religion, education, or economic standing, has an inalienable right to vote as the US Constitution is currently written.

In the interests of full disclosure I am a long-time friend of William John Cox, going back to 1945 at Wolfforth, Texas, and I serve on the advisory board of the USVRA.

For anyone concerned about the viability and sustainability of the United States of America, William J. Cox has delivered an exposé of what went wrong after the architects of our republic handed over its care and operation to the ensuing generations.
As in any type of construction nothing is perfect including the Constitution of the United States and early on there were warnings starting with George Washington, about the cracks and flaws that allowed for abuses of power and privilege.
Even as late as the end of his presidency, Eisenhower sounded the alarm on policies that could cripple the republic, and indeed they have. A listing vessel is not a pretty sight but Cox provides a plan to right the ship with his United States Voter's Rights Amendment.
Transforming America is an essential read that inspires action. At least one of our presidential candidates is calling for a peaceful revolution so it appears the movement is underway. Transforming America is clear, concise and compelling.

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980) was a significant voice in the creation of existential thought. His explorations of the ways human existence is unique among all life-forms in its capacity to choose continue to influence fields such as Marxist philosophy, sociology, and literary studies. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, but refused the honor.

Twentieth century French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre maintained one value supreme above all others – freedom. This being the case, is it any surprise Sartre places freedom front and center when addressing literature’s connection with existentialism? Below are quotes from the second of this three part book, a part entitled ‘Why Write?” along with my comments:

“With each of our acts the world reveals a new face.” ---------- By this statement Sartre emphasizes a prime reason for artistic creation: the need artists and writers have to feel they are essential in relationship to the world, that is, through their writing or painting the world is revealed in unique and important ways. Literature places a distinctively human stamp on the world and with each new painting or book another valuable, vital stamp is added. I think we can all agree the world would be smaller and poorer without, to name just several, Virginia Woolf and Leo Tolstoy, R. K. Narayan and Raymond Chandler, Anne Tyler, Philip K. Dick and Shusaku Endo.

“It is the conjoint effort of author and reader which brings upon the scene that concrete and imaginary object which is the work of the mind. There is no art except for and by others. Raskolnikov’s waiting is my waiting which I lend him. Without this impatience of the reader he would remain only a collection of signs.” ---------- I really appreciate Sartre on this point: readers awaken the words and sentences on the page, inventing and completing characters and scenes with their own feelings, emotions, ideas, intuitions and past experiences. Thusly, the work of art is rounded out, made whole and complete by a community of readers. Harry Haller receives a new, more expanded life each time I reread Hesse’s novel “Steppenwolf”.

“Thus, for the reader, all is to do and all is already done; the work exists only at the exact level of his capacities; while he reads and creates, he knows that he can always go further in his reading, can always create more profoundly, and thus the work seems to him as inexhaustible and opaque as things.” ---------- Has anybody ever reached the bottommost level of Robert Musil’s “The Man Without Qualities”? I suspect a reader could spend an entire lifetime rereading this novel and discover new, deeper dimensions and meaning with each successive study. There are a number of novels I have reread multiple times, “The Stranger” and “Siddhartha” come immediately to mind and this has certainly been my experience – I have never reached the bottom; there is always more to learn and appreciate.

“And since this directed creation is an absolute beginning, it is therefore brought about by the freedom of the reader, and by what is purest in that freedom. Thus, the writer appeals to the reader’s freedom to collaborate in the production of his work. The book does not serve me freedom, it requires it.” ---------- Sartre underscores how we are required to bring our freedom to our reading. On important aspect of freedom is openness of mind. If we find ourselves disinclined to read a novel by an author with a different sexual orientation or cultural background then ourselves, for example a novel like “Season of Migration to the North” by the Sudanese author Tayeb Salih where he explores cultural confrontation and racism, we might want to reflect on exactly how open-minded and free we really are.

“The characteristic of aesthetic consciousness is to be a belief by means of an engagement, by oath, a belief sustained by fidelity in one’s self and to the author, a perpetually renewed choice to believe. I can awaken at every moment, as I know it: but I do not want to: reading is a free dream.” ---------- Reading is a generosity, a giving oneself completely to a character and story, a gift to the writer. We can have mixed feeling reading an unsettling work, say a story of a child experiencing the horrors of war in a novel like Jerzy Kosinski’s “The Painted Bird” or a Thomas Ligotti tale of terror, but we keep turning the pages, keeping our free dream alive since we value our readerly commitment and engagement.

“The work can be defined as an imaginary presentation of the world insofar as it demands human freedom. The result of which is that there is no “gloomy literature”, since, however dark may be the colors in which one paints the world, he paints it only so that free men may feel their freedom as they face it. Above all, the unique point of view from which the author can present the world to those freedoms whose concurrence he wishes to bring about is that of a world to be impregnated always with more freedom. ---------- Is there ever enough freedom in the world? Sartre thinks there is always room for more freedom – thus, more literature, more books.

Final note: I have cited works of fiction since, for the most part, Sartre uses fiction as examples throughout his book (Sartre famously disliked poetry). However, when he speaks of literature, not only is Sartre referring to novels and stories but other types of creative writing such as poetry, plays, essays and, yes, reviews.
