The late Orthodox spiritual writer, Philip Sherrard, wrote about "a single unified science." Such a science can only exist insofar as it is rooted in the wisdom/glory of God. Bulgakovian sophiology is therefore approached, in this study, from within a larger context than is usually accorded to it. This approach includes reference to what is sometime called The Great Tradition or the perennial wisdom. It is suggested that Bulgakov is best thought of as a visionary Christian writer and Christian humanist, and that his sophiology will continue to be relevant into the future because it is, in essence, a Christian expression of the unitive vision which both acknowledges and transcends modern (and postmodern) discernment of "difference."
Within the context of Christian Orthodoxy, Bulgakov’s sophiology connects with the contemporary search for a more open, comprehensive, and progressive Orthodoxy rooted in liturgical practice and patristic spirituality. It is also suggested that sophiology, more broadly, is best understood as a particular approach, as opposed to a specific method, to understanding and addressing resistances (within ourselves) to the reign of heaven in the world today and in the years to come. As one student of Fr. Bulgakov is said to have characterized his theology/sophiology--it is "nothing but the experience of the Kingdom of God!"

In the arena of of philosophy and religion, Sergius Bulgakov is one of the towering figures of the 20th century. Much criticized by Orthodox theologians for his approach to dogma and and his ecclesiology, Bulgakov nonetheless persevered in his deep need to understand God's relevance to our age as well as to explore the human condition. This has translated well in Robert Thompson's new book: From Glory to Glory: The Sophianic Vision of Fr. Sergius Bulgakov, which serves as an excellent overall examination of both the man and his work.
The fresh approach of Bulgakov is his willingness to expand Orthodox theology rather than rehash the dogmas of the patristic era, which has been done multiple times. Although the neo-patristic movement has dominated the theological field in mainstream Orthodoxy, it is the sophiology of Bulgakov that has captured the attention of serious students in the West, especially in the area of ecumenical and interdisciplinary studies, and this is highlighted in Thompson's perceptive analysis. It is the perennial philosophy, sometimes called "The Great Tradition" that has so aptly been advanced in Thompson's understanding of Bulgakov's sophiology, and which serves as the ground for retrieving the theology of Bulgakov for the church as well as for the modern world.
Thompson's analysis, like Bulgakov's himself, is viewed through a holistic and unitive lens. He well describes the need for a sophianic hermeneutic to serve as the ground for "the theatre of God's glory."
