The first section of A Trackless Path is a thoughtful introduction to the text and McLeod's relationship with it; the second is his beautiful and evocative translation of an ancient poem on dzogchen; the third and main part of the book is his thoughtful commentary through which he illuminates the meaning of the poem, verse by verse. McLeod is clearly writing (and writing clearly) for the seeker in today's world who is called to pursue non-dual, non-conceptual awareness. McLeod's lucid practice-oriented commentary is enriched by the seamless interweaving of experiences from his own spiritual journey. What emerges is a picture of the direct and personal ways McLeod found to meet the challenges he encountered on his path. This is a book for the practitioner of any contemplative tradition-Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Taoism, Judaism or non-dual awareness. "McLeod's careful wise scholarship and craftsmanship, and his determined, almost heroic, point of view on practice, make this book a thrilling read." --Norman Fischer, author of What is Zen: Plain Talk for a Beginner's Mind "A work of exceptional beauty, elegance, and spiritual depth... the unparalleled teachings of Dzogchen are illuminated from within the practice and experience of one of our most gifted translators and meditation teachers." --Reggie Ray, author of Touching Enlightenment: Finding Realization in the Body "Through this extraordinary text and Ken McLeod's brilliant translation and commentary, the nature of trekchö clearly shines through... pointing clearly and unequivocally at its instantaneous spontaneity..." --Keith Dowman, author of Spaciousness, the radical dzogchen of the vajra-heart His skillful and deep commentaries offer a new paradigm of interpretation. He approaches the mystical songs of great masters as poetic expressions of inner transformation rather than philosophical presentations of noble truths ... --Sylvia Wetzel, author Women and Buddhism

A joy to read and to reflect on
By Book Drawn
Reading this latest book by Ken McLeod was a pleasure. He immediately sets a tone of familiarity and warmth by sharing relevant experiences on his own spiritual path as he’s telling us a little history of Dzogchen and Jigme Lingpa and where he will take us. The book itself centers on Jigme Lingpa’s poem Revelations of the Ever-present Good from The Great Vastness Heart Drop Cycle.
Who is the poem and book meant for? Ken McLeod best tells us:
“Poems such as this one are intended for the people for whom contemplative practice is a core element, if not the core element, of their lives. They are written for those who seek or sought direct experience rather than conceptual understanding. The teachings contained in these poems are poetic expressions of the kind of experiences that are highly valued by mystics and contemplatives. They are simultaneously a joyous celebration of those experiences and a method of communicating to others how to attune themselves to them. This book is intended for practitioners in any contemplative tradition who are drawn to a peace or freedom that can only be found when we touch a knowing that is free from the projections of thought and feeling.” (From book at page 10).
And I might add it’s meant for everyone else too, since if this doesn’t describe you now, it should, and it will likely describe you at some point in life.
Structurally, the book is easy to follow starting with the poem in its entirety, followed by single chapters for each verse followed with a two to three page commentary. Since it’s an attempt to guide you to wisdom beyond words, the commentary must circle that meaning by use of examples, illustrations, stories and both practice and practical suggestions. This is accomplished with such variation that at least something is likely to have meaning and bring insight for you.
The author’s excellent earlier book, Wake Up To Your Life: Discovering the Buddhist Path of Attention, presented traditional Buddhist teachings. This is a very different kind of book, but no less worth reading. It should be on your list.

Concise, direct, profound.
By albert grabb
As someone relatively new to the practice of Dzogchen or The Great perfection, I found Ken McLeod's A Trackless Path extraordinarily helpful. This book is a translation and commentary of a famous Tibetan poem. The concise introduction immediately preceding the translation is extremely informative and begins to the provide the direction or tone the poem eventually takes. It is obviously difficult for someone who doesn't speak Tibetan to comment on a translation, but that's not the point here. This is an exercise in conveying that which usually escapes words. For me, McLeod succeeded in a very profound manner.

A treasure for contemplation
By Tamas Nemeth
Life, the totality of our experiences, is a mystery, in the sense that we cannot understand it, however, we can know it experientially – says Ken McLeod. “Once known, mind itself is like space”, as Jigme Lingpa’s dzogchen poem (the subject of the book) begins. When we fully know and are present in the mystery, there comes an exquisite quality of freedom. We can experience our life this way.
You don’t need to be a dzogchen practitioner to appreciate this book. If you deeply yearn to know your life, your experiences fully, and interested in contemplative work, then this book is a treasure, a goldmine for you as it is for me. It not only describes (at least to the extent it is possible to describe with words) the freedom, the peace, the ease of full open presence, the “great completion” of every piece of experience, but also gives insightful, subtle, yet powerful suggestions, to guide the reader on their path to get there.
Ken McLeod uses a clear and direct language. His translation and commentary get close to “the heart of the matter” as much as possible, or more precisely, they get us close to that. He has put an effort of a lifetime into translating dharma texts in a way that is understandable, accessible and meaningful for a modern Western mind, yet preserving the essence. This is true for his Wake Up to Your Life, a detailed systematic, step-by-step encyclopedia of Buddhism, for his Reflections on Silver River, a translation and commentary (much like A Trackless Path) of an important mahayana poem discussing compassion, one of the two key topics of Buddhism, and for this book, which discusses wisdom, the other key topic of Buddhism.
Having read something like a hundred Buddhist books I always felt like I was reading ABOUT something (Buddhism, meditation, etc.) sometimes in a mystical language, sometimes in a unfathomable technical jargon, usually in both. This book (and Ken’s other books), on the other hand, put me in immediate, direct, intimate connection with “the heart of the matter” itself!
