About the Author
Larry Lentchner, Ph.D., is a practicing psychologist. Over the years he developed interest and expertise in the treatment of drug addiction, sports psychology, hemisphericity and consciousness evolution. As terrorism began to take its vicious hold on life and emotional health, Dr. Lentchner began to work through his understanding of the origins and dynamics of terroristic consciousness. This effort, over a decade in the making, led to the novel Onederland. When he was about to start his senior year in college, he started to scribe what he thought would be his first novel. He quickly realized that although he loved writing and believed himself to have some talent, he didn’t know enough about life to say anything worth a novel. That would take some time. At this point he became a psychology major, and eventually a psychologist. He could not imagine a better way to learn what he needed about life and living. Dr. Lentchner lives in Branchville, New Jersey, with his wife, Kathleen. He has four children and five grandchildren. He maintains a small practice of psychotherapy, leaving him time to write.

Noel Sturgeon's book comprehensively explores the wide diversity within ecofeminist theory and activism while challenging the common assumptions that (1) feminist theory is, or should be, anti-essentialist, without any reliance on essentialist constructs, and that (2) all essentialist constructs are politically problematic, having no political usefulness. With the number of feminist and ecofeminist perspectives ever increasing and thus presenting a real danger of disunity across differences within the feminist movement the need for strategic alliances between feminists is all the more urgent. In this sense Sturgeon's argument is itself strategically well timed. Her book illuminates the ecofeminist literature that preceses it and affords clear direction for future work.

Essential problems with Ecofeminism
Noël Sturgeon. Ecofeminist Natures; Race, Gender, Feminist Theory and Political Action. New York: Routledge, 1997. 260 pages.
In her book, Ecofeminist Natures, Noël Sturgeon deals with the highly problematical branch of feminism: ecofeminism. She defines ecofeminism as "... a feminist rebellion within male-dominated radical environmentalism" (25) and in the introduction she says: "The ecofeminist movement I examine, and in some ways construct throughout this book, is a fractured, contested, discontinuous entity..." (3). This latter description illustrates the problematicality of the movement and in the book, Sturgeon addresses the various problems with respect to five different aspects of ecofeminism: history, ethnography, sociology, politics and theory. The major part of the introduction is devoted to explaining essentialist theory which will come back time and again throughout the book as ecofeminism's ally, but also its biggest enemy. The most prominent and seemingly inescapable problem that plagues ecofeminism, which effects all the aspects that Sturgeon is examining, is the opposition between constructionism and essentialism. The dualism of ideas is illustrated by Sturgeon giving both the constructionist and essentialist answer to the question why women are connected to the environment. Sturgeon explains how this dualism came into the movement: "... the theoretical inconsistencies found in these various ecofeminist positions is a result of the strategic and dynamic qualities of the formation of ecofeminism as a political location within specific historical and political contexts." (58). Despite the presence of many constructionist ideas within ecofeminism, the movement's use of essentialist rhetoric leads to an enormous amount of critique from feminists outside the ecofeminist movement, which in turn leads to lack of critique within the movement creating a stalemate where neither side is willing to change their position. Feminists who concern themselves with issues involving women and nature do not want to be labelled as ecofeminists because of the 'useless' essentialist rhetoric it sometimes employs. Sturgeon illustrates the extent of criticism from "established feminism" (167) by mentioning that 'mainstream' feminists are trying to give ecofeminism as little publicity as possible. There are, for instance, hardly any articles dealing with ecofeminism in renowned feminist journals and if there is one it focuses on the 'bad' aspects of ecofeminism, like essentialism, which then seem to represent the whole ecofeminist movement. These facts make reading the book very interesting and exciting because the reader has the feeling they are being let into previously unexplored and unknown terrain for people outside the (eco)feminist movement. Although Sturgeon points to the fact that essentialist rhetoric might sometimes be useful in certain contexts (strategic essentialism), she acknowledges that the essentialist ideas that the movement adheres to can create barriers within the movement and cause a sense of exclusion for certain groups or individuals. She identifies one of the larger problems within the movement to be the race issue. Historically, ecofeminism, although it claims to be an antiracist movement, has been predominantly white. That, combined with the essentialist idea that all women are inherently the same which does not allow for racial differences to be acknowledged, has created barriers between white and coloured women within the movement and has kept more coloured women from joining. Moreover, efforts from within ecofeminism to get rid of the reputation of being racist have actually worked against the movement. At one point, ecofeminism took on the standpoint that indigenous women were even more close to nature because of their culture than western women, creating another binarism which can be perceived as being racist. Moreover, it contains the racial essentialist implication that indigenous cultures are inherently closer to nature. Throughout the book, Sturgeon gives examples of ecofeminism 'at work' by looking at various direct action movements that exist within ecofeminism: Women's Environment and Development Organisation (WEDO), WomanEarth Feminist Peace Institute, Women's Pentagon Actions (WPA) and Earth First!, among others. A big part of Chapter 2 is dedicated to WomanEarth's founder and influential feminist author Ynestra King. Sturgeon stresses the parallelism of ecofeminism and anti-militarism throughout the book and uses King's four principles of ecofeminism to illustrate this: 1) the subjugation of women and the subjugation of nature are dialectically related, 2) hierarchy justifies domination and must be resisted on all levels, 3) diversity must be maintained ... and 4) dualistic thinking ... supports all kinds of domination... (67). So, every different chapter deals with one specific aspect of ecofeminism and its problems, and Sturgeon, as said before, tries to answer the questions on how to resolve the problems. Disappointingly, the answers, in the end, only seem to amount to a choice between two rather unattractive alternatives: we either just accept and live with the problems within ecofeminism, or we give up on ecofeminism altogether and start another movement for feminist environmentalists. Although this position might seem a little simplistic, it is clear that ecofeminism seems to have such a bad name that serious revisions should be made to the movement's principles so the various problematic issues can be resolved. Attempts have been made to remove the most controversial aspect, essentialist ideas, from the movement, but none have been entirely successful: "[There have been] various efforts to generate a nonessentialising ecofeminist theory by the creation of a new name for such a position. I will look at the theoretical arguments used to purify these new ecofeminism positions from essentialism and show that none of them succeed in elimination essentialism completely ." (my italics) (178). Sturgeon's conclusion is: "... that we do not need to produce a new and more perfect ecofeminism, but rather to recognize as necessary the dance of critique and consolidation that is part of theorizing and political action..." (195). In other words, the conclusion of this survey of ecofeminist theory is that we must accept the problems with theories and put them to our advantage. Because of the movement of history and changing situations in politics and theories, a 'perfect' political movement or a theory can only exist for so long anyway.

Theoretically astute and scrupulously fair--a page-turner!

Noel Sturgeon's Ecofeminist Natures is a very welcome addition to the growing body of work on ecofeminism. As both a cultural critic and an activist in the women's peace movement, Sturgeon is ideally positioned to provide a thorough, informative history of ecofeminist theory and practice while also critically examining both the problems and potential of different strands within the many-faced, oppositional movement known as ecofeminism.
In particular, she is concerned with the current "political stalemate between the tropes of essentialism and anti-essentialism within feminism" (11), a stalemate she sees as unnecessarily and unfortunately dividing ecofeminist theory from practice and ecofeminism from feminism. While Sturgeon makes the necessary point that critics have exaggerated ecofeminist tendencies toward essentialism, she makes an even more valuable contribution by insisting that the essentialist tendencies which exist "must be explained as well as resisted" (59). She takes up this task by examining ecofeminist theory and activism within its historical and political contexts, both in the US and internationally.
Sturgeon emphasizes that when ecofeminism is viewed as a political intervention into male-dominated discourses such as deep ecology or United Nations discussions of environment and development, certain seemingly essentialist symbols and language can be seen as products of an urgent need for political alliances among women of profoundly different racial, class, and national backgrounds; these "essentialist moments" help create a shifting, strategic relationship between "women" and "nature" for political purposes (11). Sturgeon also critiques certain essentialist constructions of racial difference within ecofeminist practice (the WomanEarth Feminist Peace Institute) and theory (the discourse of "indigenous women" as the "ultimate ecofeminists"), while also acknowledging them as real efforts to confront the implications of race for ecofeminism. Finally, Sturgeon examines numerous recent academic texts in which feminists create typologies that charge ecofeminists with essentialism, or in which ecofeminists use typologies to resist such charges. She compares these texts, which often ignore the efforts of feminists of color and tend to oppose feminist theory and activism, to other, less diverse typologies and perspectives, including the work of Donna Haraway. Ultimately, she concludes that "the most vital radical political theories develop in tandem with radical movement practice" (195).
Much recent work on ecofeminism touches on the importance of attending to the movement's shifting, multiple nature and to the ways race affects women's relationships to nature and ecofeminism. Sturgeon's book is notable not only for providing a new perspective on the much-traversed terrain of essentialism, but also for making these concerns central to its content and method. And, because Sturgeon so expertly contextualizes more commonly known ecofeminist theoretical and philosophical issues within their history and politics, this book is something of a page-turner. While always necessary, theoretically astute, and scrupulously fair, Sturgeon's discussions--such as her account of the problems and successes of WomanEarth Institute or the Women's Environment and Development Organization--are also fascinating case studies of the difficult yet vital work of achieving more equitable relations among people and with the earth.

A study for all levels of spiritual fitness!

Simple to read, short chapters for a keep it simple study, yet deep in Scripture and in challenging the reader to go deeper. Very easy to follow for a new believer or someone new to a study, but still gives the more mature believer something to dig into. Love how easily the references of the physical keeping fit relate to the spiritual keeping fit. Love it!

A Bible study book for individuals or groups

I'm working my way through Tammy Carpenter's Bible study for women, Spiritual Synergy.The author has included nine chapters on weights we need to put down and four we need to pick up. The weights we carry that hurt us are a heavy heart, negative people, undisciplined life, rotten fruit, disobedience, lukewarmness, lack of vision, being superspiritual, and gossip. The four weights she encourages us to exercise are the fruit of the Spirit, strength and courage, holiness, wisdom and discernment. Each chapter has in introduction, then what she calls "Things to Consider," followed by "Life Exercised," personal examples and encouragement. Under "Things to Consider," Tammy has from three to eight questions per chapter based on Scripture to look up that causes the reader to examine the Word and dig deep. Some of the things to consider are short answer, but some take time to think about and develop.

I've highlighted words of wisdom from the author's pages, things I want to remember and put into practice, like on page 20, "Drop the weight of any activity that is not your God-given responsibility" -- and on page 72, "To walk in true holiness we need to speak His words not our own." The study has been very helpful and encouraging and could be used either for individual study or group study.

An Important Book

In an age when no one has reasonable debates, talks past each other and demonizes the opposition, a book like this can be an important corrective. Professor Gutting uses case studies to teach the various tools of the philosophical trade that can inform reasoned argument. One of the most important of these tools, and the one most needed in these times, is the Principle of Charity, which requires that you "render in neutral language the main elements of your opponent's position". This is important not just to understand it objectively but to also help you rationally fashion your own counterarguments. This would be very helpful today in the issue of same-sex marriage, for example, where one side deems the other homophobic for simply objecting and the other side deems the other as destroyers of the values of Western civilization. Regardless of which side you are on, you need to fully understand the arguments of the opposition. Another example is the idea of convictions, that is fundamental beliefs from which a person begins that do not necessarily require specific reasons, although they can be rational, similar to axioms in mathematics. Gutting's case studies include religious agnosticism, the limits of science, and education in a capitalist economy. For each case study he brings to bear another principle, and teaches how it would be applied for that specific topic. I do not agree with all his conclusions, but, although it is clear where Gutting stands, the point of the book is not for Gutting to make a case for his positions, but to make a case for reasoned argument.

Misapplication of philosophy

This is disappointing on how to argue politics. The “charity concept” of posing opposition arguments in clear terms is well taken but its hardly even a start to the issue. Us non-professional philosophers, who Gutting condescendingly purports to write for, do better to read the 'Opposing Viewpoints' or 'Contemporary Issues' series by Greenhaven Press. Ideological fixation, historical blindness, character assassination, falsifying of statistics and political corruption are all too prevalent, and not subject to logical analysis. Incumbents are too often endowed by their constituents with irrational hero worship. It's all too easy to find a weak argument by a “respected economist” like Paul Krugman while ignoring much more competent writing by economists like Joseph Stiglitz or William Nordhaus. The book is useless on the important issue of party politics. Arguments for and against specific politicians misses the point that we don't get to vote for the best candidates. How to separate propaganda from fact would be more useful than anything shown here. The left position on planned economy generally wins on ethics by taking the moral high ground and loses on the basis of historical performance. Neither are logical arguments. More political issues are decided by wishful thinking than by philosophy.
The idea that it's not useful to argue since it's not possible to change a mind already made up has much more relevance than the author admits.

If treatment of the first item, politics, is this trivial can it be worthwhile to read on?
Scanning the science, economics and art sections doesn't seem to show much improvement, but I could be wrong. The author shows himself to be well read on a wide variety of philosophical works including Plato, Descartes, Aquinas, Foucault, Wittgenstein, Rorty, Keynes, Rawles, Dawkins, Alvin Plantinga, Peter Singer, Wilfrid Sellars and others, but those philosophers deserve a better hearing than given here. In the field of science Gutting cites Thomas Kuhn, but Roger Bacon and Karl Popper are curiously omitted. It would seem that excursions into behavioral politics, science, religion and economics is the realm of psychology rather than philosophy.

Loved everything about this book...and the rest of the wicked game books. Kept me intrigued. Ember casey is an awesome writer! Wish the story didn't have to end but I guess all great things must come to an end. Will definitely be reading her other books.

OMG great book really need to read the whole series

This is the first book from this series that I have read...Yes I know I started backwards but I discovered it from a friend so now I have to go and read all the books leading up to this one because.... This one was really good.

This book was funny and sexy and I just have to say WOW this is one series I really need to read from the start and if you have not (like me) then I highly suggest you do so.

Great read—Loved it!

I really enjoyed reading about the Cunningham family, and I hate that this is the final book. Although I have read all of the Cunningham books, this is the first review I have posted. Not only does it involve romance, mystery, but it also had some humor. There are several twists and turns within the story that makes it interesting and will pique your interest. The Cunningham Family series just keep getting better—you will not want to put it down, and it keeps you enthralled with the characters. Ember Casey is a very good writer, and this story is well written. If you have read any of Ember’s books before, you will enjoy this series. I would highly recommend the entire series.

How many bad boys giggle?

This book had an odd mix of first person and third person point of view. I personally enjoyed the first person parts (Sara's) rather than the third person side of Nicks story. Other things bugged me like Nick giggling and saying things like "gosh", because, let's be honest, guys don't giggle and they certainly don't use the word "gosh" unless they're 100, but if they do either of those things I don't think you can call them "bad boys".
I'm not upset that I read it, but certainly will more closely sample books by this author before reading another by her.

A BEAUTIFUL CINDERELLA SHORT STORY!!!

I received this ARC for an honest review.
I always loved Cinderella as a little girl and when I picked up this book, I knew I found a today version of Cinderella. Nick and Sara made the characters really come to life. Nick a billionaire saw Sara and knew she was the one for him. How he went about getting her was sweet and very romantic. Not overly pushy at all!! The fact that Nick's grandmother and twin sister loved Sara made the book all the more believable. The circumstances leading up to them making love for the first time was so sweet and precious. Nick could be a very rich guy, but he really knew how to treat Sara. I loved this book and it was worth reading it.

The Vintage years aren't all cruises and golf dates for most of us....

I love this book. I am reading it so fast that my eyes hurt. It is a personal and passionately political account of what it is to be a woman in her late fifties living in the UK, but the lessons learned and hard-earned wisdom could apply to any of us. I first read Helen Walmsley-Johnson's writing in the Guardian when she was the anonymous "Invisible Woman" and her funny, trenchant and painfully honest columns were like nothing else I had read. A woman my age, intelligent, funny and struggling with life's challenges (deaths, caregiving, unemployment, bills, fear, finding trousers that fit our ageing bodies) which are so familiar to me. When she emerged from anonymity - I was thrilled. Reading her book is even better than those columns. The prejudice she has faced as an "older" job hunter is stunning. A seasoned and skilled PA, she put in over 500 applications for roles and didn't get a single interview. The good news is that (after this shameful rejection by the job market) she turned finally to writing - and we're lucky she did. Did I mention that she is very funny? Buy it, friends and enjoy!

A Courageous story of the middle years

As stated in the opening lines, most of those reading this book will be women in their middle years, and that's certainly true as far as this reader goes. Being a tad older than Helen Walmsley-Johnson I can relate to much of what she has to say as, I'm sure, do so many others.
I didn't know what to expect from this book, I wasn't sure if it was for me because I don't quite fit with either the slippers and cardigan brigade (though I do own both) or the clinging to youth mob. Well, I've read it now, even re-read several parts, and yes, this book is for me, it's a book for all women. Many men would do well to read it it too
This is about how one woman faced and overcame the odds. The story of how she arrived at the place she is now. Helen describes herself as being a boom and bust person, and I have to say, the evidence sure supports that statement, talk about a roller coaster ride! Some life events are described quite succinctly, yet in themselves could provide the topic for a whole new book, for instance:
Helen, as expected of us back then, was duly married and that marriage provided her with security, a comfortable life and children, and then? bust! Can you imagine losing not only that lifestyle, but far worse, the custody of your three children as the result of a nasty divorce? The stress of the fight to win them back and then, with next to no money, provide a home for them? She did that, she used her wits and intelligence to find work when there was little to find simply because she had to, as mothers do.
When her children were grown up she returned to full time work but lost her job. This is the part where Helen meets both ageism and the lack of work opportunities. Unable to find satisfying work, at the age of 45 she decides to go for "boom" again, up sticks and move to London to get herself a good job. Well, O.K. say it quickly and it doesn't sound much, but think about it, that is brave! I can remember going to London to work, in my forties, feeling overwhelmed by everything and everyone rushing everywhere, yet I had the security of a job and accommodation!
She must have been darned good though, as eventually (with quite a story in between) she became PA to the editor in chief of The Guardian where her job description is pretty awe-inspiring, making and editing films, arranging high powered meetings, attending social events and being a fixer. Let's not forget too of course, her "Vintage Years" column which was my introduction to Helen Walmsley-Johnson, even though she was invisible at that time.
I love Helens thoughts on cosmetic surgery, so spot on, amusing, yet somehow a sad aspect of what is becoming the social norm for those women desperately seeking a youthful appearance. However, I've no idea what "vajazzling" is, I didn't want to google it though, for fear of dropping dead and someone finding it on my browsing history.
Thanks to Helen relating a few personal anecdotes I now feel better about waking up at 3am, much better, because now I know it's actually an investment, not merely a bloody nuisance! Oh! and then there's The Lipstick Phenomenon, yes I've noticed that too, no wonder red is still the most popular colour sold. We can't do anything to stop the ageing process but Helen does give out some jolly good advice on how to live with it, how to make the best of it and be comfortable with ourselves.
There's one part of the book which does stick in my mind, it's about defining the middle years, of conforming to those boundaries as perceived by others. Helen observes something I hadn't given much thought to, that it's usually the young who feel uncomfortable with any signs of non-conformity amongst the wrinklies. Well, fair enough I suppose, nobody wants their granny to be seen out clubbing dressed like a Cher knock off. Then again (and this is my opinion) isn't it the duty of older people to embarrass the young?
To be honest, I find this book hard to categorise, it doesn't quite fit the usual self help, social commentary or memoir genres, what its not though is a lighthearted romp through the life and times of a lady who copes, goodness knows, we all cope, but it is rather the story of a woman of courage, strength and determination. Oh sure, the writing is warm, funny and inviting, and the style, it's so charming, so understated that the author makes it easy for us to minimise or even gloss over the sheer magnitude of her achievements.
I highly recommend this book, I'd love young women to read it despite the fact that I suspect I wouldn't have, or, even if I had, probably wouldn't of taken a blind bit of notice.

Hobbes is a lot smarter than I am

I finished reading Leviathan a couple months ago, but cringed every time I thought about writing a review. The book is large at over 700 pages and covers so much ground, a review would have to be a book in itself to do it justice. Due to Leviathan's philosophical content and somewhat antiquated language, it's very slow going. Each page needs time to digest.
So I'm not going to bother writing a real review. I will just say that Leviathan is a 5-star classic and worth your time, if you can deal with reading political philosophy. Hobbes divides the work into four major sections:
Of Man, in which he discusses human nature and why civilized people prefer peace to war. Here Hobbes establishes the primary reason that people form a government to rule over them: to safeguard them from enemies, both external and internal.
Of Common-wealth, in which Hobbes first talks about the several forms of government and the pros and cons of each. He then explains the rights that a government has over its people; according to Hobbes, the government can do pretty much anything it wants to. Finally he goes into the things that tend to weaken or dissolve a government.
Of a Christian Common-wealth, the longest section, in which Hobbes accepts the Bible as the word of God and quotes from it numerous time to bolster his position in support of a powerful government.
Of the Kingdome of Darknesse, the shortest and strangest section, in which Hobbes veers away from the topic of government and instead focuses on religious practices and beliefs of the day that he deems improper and inconsistent with the Bible.
It took me months to read this, but I came away with great respect for Hobbes and a better understanding of politics. I can't say that I agree with everything I read, but I think the majority of his arguments are sound and convincing.
Five stars, no doubt in my mind. But it's a dive into the deep end, so you'll probably only finish it if you really appreciate and enjoy philosophical discussion!

PROMETHEUS edition is only first half.

Like most books, Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan is divided into chapters. But it is also divided into four "Parts." The Prometheus edition (not to be confused with the Penguin edition) includes only the first two parts, though they sell it as if it were the entire book instead of only the first half. Any other edition would be better than this.
If you want a good edition, you could go with the Hackett edition, edited by Edwin Curley, modernized and with the important variants (translated into English, of course) from the Latin edition of the Leviathan published during Hobbes' lifetime. A good edition that is not modernized is the Cambridge edition edited by Richard Tuck. (Having an editor does NOT necessarily mean that the text has been reduced; they often serve to rid the text of previous publishing typographical errors.) Which of these you should get will depend upon two things: Whether you are interested in the variants from the Latin edition, and whether you are comfortable reading something written in the 1600's. For most people, probably the modernized Hackett edition would be best, as many people have difficulty with 17th century English. But if you want Hobbes' exact words, I recommend the Cambridge edition. Whenever buying classic texts, which edition you buy can be extremely important, as the dreadful Prometheus edition demonstrates.

The case for absolute government

Being a free Kindle edition there is no introduction and no notes - but you do get most of the text and all the passages that matter. The main difference from the original is that there are fewer capitals and italics. Hobbes used them for emphasis very much more than a modern writer would, and their pruning in this edition makes the text easier to read.

Modern political philosophy begins with Hobbes. Before Hobbes, writers for centuries had accepted the divine right of kings or did not think much about the origins of government. Hobbes provides reasons as to how and why men come together to form government. He starts with the assumption that the organized state is a choice. The alternative is the "state of nature", where there is both a "right" of nature and "laws" of nature. Hobbes uses these terms in a very individual way. The "right" of nature is "the Liberty each man hath, to use his own power...for the preservation of his own Life". The "laws" of nature dictate that each person should seek to live with others in peace, and should only retain the right to as much liberty as he is willing to permit others. These "laws" are found by reason, and are utilitarian rather than moral. Hobbes is simply saying that if men think about their situation, reason tells them that giving up their natural rights in exchange for others doing likewise is the best means of self-preservation, even though actually doing it is contrary to human nature.

On human nature Hobbes is cynical. Reason suggests advantages stem from co-operation, but unless men are constrained by an external authority this is outweighed by instinct. Men are fundamentally competitive and selfish. They are also roughly equal in ability so no one person can impose his will on others, and the most one can hope for is to protect oneself from others. Life in the state of nature is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short." Men are therefore driven to create government via a pact with others to give up their natural rights to a sovereign authority, which may be either an individual or an oligarchy (Hobbes prefers the former). Hobbes uses the concept of a "social contract". It is not an historical event but a logical device to describe the ongoing basis of consent to government. Hobbes' view of human nature is such that he allocates absolute power to the sovereign. Limited government, he believed, is unworkable for men are too prone to division and selfishness, and "a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand." Influenced by the divisive years preceding the English Civil War, Hobbes grants the sovereign the power of censorship, including the ability to prevent discussion of religion because such discussion leads to conflict. Anybody seeking to preach a new religion should be treated as a criminal.

Had Hobbes been writing a century later then religion would almost certainly have played no part in his writings. He himself was not a religious man. His concern with religion stemmed from its role in the conflict leading to the English Civil War, a period during which he lived.

Is there an ultimate right of rebellion against the absolute ruler? The answer is to be found in the nature of the social contract. Men give up their natural right to self-preservation to a sovereign in order to to better achieve it. If a situation arises where the sovereign cannot ensure that safety then society is dissolved. Can any action by the sovereign be challenged? Yes, if a man is conscripted into military service (an obvious threat to life) in circumstances where the survival of the state is not threatened. If the survival of the state is threatened then so are the lives of its citizens, and in these circumstances the sovereign can impose conscription. Hobbes adds that even in this case a citizen should have the right to replace himself with a volunteer if one is available.

"Leviathan" is not an easy book, not helped by the fact that the English is that of a man born just 24 years after Shakespeare. However, it is an important work that makes a good study companion to Locke's "Second Treatise", which argues for limited government.
