How to Defeat Religion in 10 Easy Steps: A Toolkit for Secular Activists, by Ryan T. Cragun

Do you want the greatest political and societal challenges of the day to be addressed with thoughtful, reality-based solutions rather than with cherry-picked quotations from scripture? Do you want to shrink religion - especially fundamentalist religion - to the point that it plays no noticeable role in public life? Do you want right-wing religious leaders to be so unpopular that politicians avoid them rather than pander to them for endorsements? Drawing on the latest social-scientific research on religion, How to Defeat Religion in 10 Easy Steps illustrates specific, actionable steps nonbelievers - and even progressive believers - can take to facilitate fundamentalist religion's decline. With each of its 10 chapters focusing on a specific strategy that research has shown can weaken religion, detailing the how and why, the book covers topics as far ranging as education, welfare, sex, science, capitalism, and Christmas, and offers a wide range of recommendations for individuals, local groups, and national organizations interested in speeding up secularization.

Wonderful Introduction to Secular Politics and Issues that everyone should read and consider!
By henderson
I found this book truly fascinating in both its content and structure. Although the author, at times, simplifies variation within and between secular and religious communities (which is to be expected in a short toolkit style book), the willingness to take on issues within current secular polities (i.e., lacking diversity and tendencies toward scientism), the ability to demonstrate issues that even many religious and spiritual people have with fundamentalism that could allow them to benefit from secular movements, and the suggestion of clear, concrete collective and individual efforts people and groups may engage in to oppose religious fundamentalism and control within society (tactics that, in many cases, worked for religious groups seeking control over society in recent decades) all make this book a useful and important introduction to secular politics, the pitfalls of accepting existing religious authority in secular / public matters in America, and tactics that could open American society to more productive discussions about what is best for all (instead of what some mythological being supposedly wants). I would (and already do) recommend this book to anyone interesting in society free from religious fundamentalism. While non-humanist identified readers may wish to ignore the last two chapters (basically a humanist sermon) except for their suggestions which may be applied to any ideology (secular, religious or otherwise), there is something for every type of nonreligious person, group, and / or philosophy within the pages of this toolkit, and I would thus suggest all such parties both check out the book itself and encourage the author to consider creating a follow up that goes more deeply into the nuances and variations of possible secular worlds and politics.

Two Princes And A King: A Concise Review Of Three Political Assassinations, by Carmine Savastano

"Two Princes And A King" is a concise review of three political assassinations. The deaths of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy occurred in just over five years. Improbable suspects assertedly struck down three prominent leaders; each forever alters the course of American history. The book reviews primary evidence that showcases deception, incompetence, and errors in the legal record. Revisited are the official and public assertions that have slowly eroded with time. Suggestions regarding those who allegedly undertook conspiracies to hide the truth are offered. A breadth of new information, possible suspects, and intense scrutiny on the primary evidence of each case is offered.

Review
"In Carmine Savastano's book, "Two Princes And A King" he writes, "Some people collect stamps and art, Hoover collected dangerous secrets." Savastano expounds upon this observation of J. Edgar Hoover by interweaving Hoover's culpability in his role in the investigations of the assassinations of JFK, RFK, and Martin Luther King. If you're interested in the many shadings of these three major events in U.S. history, you will appreciate Savastano's approach to covering these events with well-documented facts through his usage of painstaking research and insight into the elements of all three horrific deaths. Savastano offers the reader of "Two Princes and a King" insight into the three most important assassinations in modern American history using logic, research, and well-documented sources."Gayle Nix Jackson, Author of Orville Nix: The Missing JFK Assassination Film

I was really impressed by the amount of facts cited through out the book. The overall structure makes it a really smooth, coherent and quick read. But don't let the phrase "quick read" deter you. This is some heavily interesting subject matter. The MLK portion was the most engaging for me personally. This is a great read if for no other reason to see how much historical content was hidden from the public. Now that this info has come to light the facts are just staggering. I highly recommend this book.

Carmine has performed a great service by providing a broad view of the potential
suspects in the political assassinations of the 1960's while at the same time
dealing with a host of conspiracy related mysteries and urban legends that have
actually been resolved over time. In doing so, he makes use of the most contemporary
documentary evidence and research, kudos to him for tackling the myths along with
the conspiracies.

Review
An extraordinarily comprehensive compilation and integration of everything we know or think we know about the long-term trajectory of human social constructions. Extremely useful and provocative. --Immanuel Wallerstein, Yale University

This extraordinary book shows how human societies have evolved, not in self-contained groups but from the outside in…. A unique feature of the book is the micro-macro link, interweaving the development of individual self and mind with changes in networks of globalization….Chase-Dunn and Lerro have produced a combination of textbook and masterpiece. --Randall Collins, University of Pennsylvania

With a narrative spanning many millennia, this book adds a double analytical edge that makes it special. As we would expect from Chris Chase-Dunn, his world-systems analysis is majestically done but with a new twist that brings individuals to the fore. This is achieved by teaming up with a sociohistorical psychologist, Bruce Lerro, to integrate the changing nature of people into the story. The resulting combination of system and self is truly ground breaking. --Peter Taylor, Professor of Human Geography, Northumbria University

Christopher Chase-Dunn is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institute for Research on World-Systems at the University of California Riverside. Chase-Dunn is the founder and former editor of the Journal of World-Systems Research and author most recently of Social Change: Globalization from the Stone Age to the Present (Paradigm 2013).

Bruce Lerro has taught for 23 years as an adjunct professor of psychology at Dominican University, Golden Gate University, and Diablo Valley College. He is the author of two books about early human societies: From Earthspirits to Sky-Gods: The Socio-Ecological Origins of Monotheism, Individualism, and Hyper-Abstract Reasoning and Power in Eden: The Emergence of Gender Hierarchies in the Ancient World.

London England Has Changed Dramatically In Recent Years ~ It Has Lost It's National Character :(
By Fiona Ó Dochartaigh
This is a book written in a journalistic poetic style, it's intention is to inform us about the real life situation in London. The mainstream media plays an important role in how the public understands issues, such as immigration. In the UK a liberal/progressive political ideology dominates and affects the framing, meaning we tend not to hear the opposing anti-immigration argument,we mostly hear that immigration and diversity is a very positive thing that greatly benefits both the immigrant and the country they move to.This author gives us the other side of the story.

Ben Judah is not taking an anti-immigration stance in this book,he makes sure he pays some homage to the god of PC in his writing, which is why I deducted a star. His sympathetic descriptions of immigrant hardship are intended to remind the majority of Londoners that their comfortable lifestyles are built on the back of a near third world labour market-this is tantamount to guilt tripping his readers.Yes, it's not helpful to resent the poor who are only trying to better themselves but that does not mean the general indigenous population should be responsible for the historical sins of elite aristocracy & the modern day globalists. It is the globalist elites that should be having their consciousness raised, because they are the ones exploiting, impoverishing and damaging the countries the immigrants are leaving.

Some immigrants regard us as morally defective: "all English girls are alcoholics'.'.'.'they drink like pigs. They drink until they can hardly walk, they disgust me.” Personally I can understand how some immigrants with high moral standards are repulsed at the least attractive aspects of our culture, they see our decadence and feel disgusted. They are right to look down on us.The author meets a Polish woman who works as a registrar, recording births and deaths. She describes the new London where fifty seven percent of births are to immigrant mothers, when she enters the names of the recently dead, they are nearly all of them old white British. A policeman tells the author: "The English are vanishing. London is no longer an English city at all" and another migrant comments: "The English are dying. They are declining fast".London has lost thousands of white British people to the rest of the UK while more than a million people of other ethnic backgrounds have moved in.The falling number of white British in the capital is known as white flight - the indigenous population forced out of their neighbourhoods by foreign migrants. They are leaving the city because they are not willing to live in an environment which has changed beyond recognition. The social reorganisation of London has caused uncertainty and great stress to the indigenous population, they are trying to master uncertainty and anxiety by using a withdrawing strategy, this gives them an illusion of control. It is not only indigenous white British citizens who are suffering, Judah gives accounts of immigrants who thought the streets of London would be paved with gold & money was growing on trees, only to find themselves exploited and resented mainly by other immigrant groups. These people didn't want to uproot themselves from their own land to settle in the capital, they did it out of economic necessity, some of the people he spoke to were very unhappy here and expressed a desire to return to their own country.

Multiculturalism (an idea that all cultures must have an equal standing with the host group even if those groups are incompatible with each other) is a political ideology which has been vigorously forced onto London and its original inhabitants have embraced their own ethnic suicide partly due to the orchestrated media mind control that has been inflicted on them and partly due to the policies of weak politicians who are dictated to by the EU a body dictated to be the globalist agenda elite. This anti indigenous revolution has been massively incentivised, so the University academics, religious leaders, politicians, media etc, are more than willing to go along with the program of dispossession. It is very clear to see that we have all been ideologically brain-washed by people hostile to the traditional Christian culture of Europe and the West, their brain washing message continually instils shaming guilt depicting our Christian past in a negative distorted and misleading ways, constantly referencing colonialism, slavery & implying Britain has a long history of being mean nasty and hostile to non Christian minorities and therefore now is the time for us to make amends because they deserve some reparations.Moses the foul mouthed drug dealer & thief has conveniently embraced grievance politics and feels he has the privilege to guilt those who might condemn his criminality. He is able to justify & comfort himself with the postcolonial ideology narrative. "What was the British Empire [censored] based on? drugs, sugar and opium..so don't you ever, ever, give me any of dat moralizing [censored]"

In the West we all live under the rule of non-discrimination.Recently Donald Trump implied Islam posed a mortal danger to the US & therefore immigration ought to temporarily stopped. There was a public outrage in Britain that included a large petition to ban him from entering the UK, there was even a heated parliamentary debate on the issue of barring him. Such is the neo marxist/progressive belief which says that the most morally wrong thing anyone can ever do is to have a critical view of a foreign group & to want to keep that group out. These people actually feel it is evil to think (thought crime) that some people are more unlike us than others, because that would also be a violation of the politically correct orthodoxy that all people are equally like us. The equality principle of the progressive says immigrants must be permitted to access our society, changing its very nature. These people think of themselves as campaigners for global justice, and no one should be allowed to disagree with them.

“London can crush you'.'.'.'or London can transform you. You can rise up here. The white people, they are not stopping you,”

Whites will not be stopping the progressive agenda because they have been subjected to social engineering, due to that engineering, they themselves agree that it is perfectly acceptable to shame white people for expressing any pride in their racial identity or empathy for their own group - inevitably this leads to a despairing kind of learned helplessness:the only way they can gain approval or self esteem is to be totally self-sacrificing of their own best interests.Indigenous Londoners feel they don't have much control of the current situation,if they speak out they risk vilification and censure so they try to accommodate and do what is expected of them. They try to rationalize the situation repressing their real feelings because they fear the social sanctions of behaving otherwise. Proponents of cosmopolitan collectivism strongly disapprove of nationalism. Neo marxist progressives think nationalism is synonymous with hatred towards foreigners. These pathologizers feel more comfortable assigning blanket blame to the indigenous population than to any other racial group.

"The split now is more:immigrants and natives. And there are millions of them... flooding in"

Integration sounds great in theory but in reality it is a utopian unrealistic ideal propagated by naive do gooders.Anthropology shows us that humans naturally live in tribes and will make war with other tribes.Strange things can happen when competing groups are put together in the same geographical area.Human beings have what is known as a binary instinct. Its a primitive response that kicks in when people feel threatened in some way, they immediately start dividing things and classify them into ,good bad, friend enemy, safe dangerous etc .This is actually a natural human instinct response.Us versus them binary divisions turn off empathy and it has nothing to do with racism either,it is a wholly natural phenomenon.Groups of people feel compelled to compete for space resources and control so I honestly dread to think what the future holds for us.Under the right circumstances, the thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted could so easily be snatched away.

Quite simply, spectacular.

The voices Ben Judah captures are frankly haunting.

He's discovered a parallel ghost-world of the city I know so well.

Destabilising, refreshing - a much-needed shock to the system.

Heartily recommended.

Must read for those wanting to understand what makes London tick.
By Amazon Customer
An offbeat, yet mesmerizing guide to the London behind the scenes that we never hear about. A new Dickens to the London rich and London poor. It gave me a valuable insight to the loves and struggles of those around me from so many different backgrounds. I was definitely engaged from beginning to end. Never too preachy and the author writes about reality as he sees it, giving a voice and perspective to the lives of migrants. An important read, especially as Europe decides how to address the influx of refugees and migrants.

Blue Skies Buddha, by Liz Lewinson

A finalist in two categories (Biography and Spiritual: General) of the prestigious US Book News' Best Books of 2015 Awards, this acclaimed biography of the early teaching years of Rama - Dr. Frederick Lenz (1950 - 1998) highlights the new age spiritual renaissance of the 1970s and 80s and the founding of an original, deep-rooted movement of American Buddhism.

Readers take part in a free-spirited adventure as they witness a wild, sports jock teenager transform into an iconoclastic, innovative spiritual teacher. For Frederick Lenz, boundary breaking was de rigueur as witnessed and reported by the 100+ students and colleagues interviewed by author Liz Lewinson.

Meditation, the empowerment of women, and Buddhist wisdom form the core of Dr. Lenz's teachings, which he shared and honed with boundless enthusiasm. He encountered opposition, of course, but he kept his priorities straight.

When he visited Nepal at age 19, he encountered an aged monk who informed him he was a lineage bearer. He was to revive and re-establish an ancient school of enlightenment. He was to find his many past life students and help them achieve joyous enlightenment in this life or at least set them securely on the path. He was to do this in the West, using Western means. In the East, centuries-old traditions maintain meditative pathways to enlightenment.

In the West, facing a blank canvas, Dr. Lenz found new ways to build mental/meditative prowess through careers such as computer science, visits to American "places of power," knowledge about real gender equilibrium (not monastic), movies, music, and dance. He taught these skills to American students and observed their success. Whether you are one of Rama's past life students (or not!), reading this fast-paced biography will bring you new realizations and freedom, and introduce you to the tenets of American Buddhism.

"This fascinating biography captures the wisdom of a genuine, compelling teacher who combined absolute miracles with humor, fun, and adventure. When you read this fast-paced book, you feel you are there, learning and transforming. This is an original and exciting read." -- Lynn Andrews, author of The Medicine Woman Series

"I was fascinated, moved, and inspired by this clear and compelling biography of Rama." - Margaret Wheatley, author of Leadership and the New Science

Review
"Rama" in this case is one Dr.Frederick Lenz,American Buddhist and teacher; and the biography of Dr.Lenz isrecommended for any who want greater insights into his life andBuddhistbelief in general.

It's a spiritual, transformational biography that surveys his life and usesthe results ofover a hundred interviews to build a wide-rangingconsideration of hismany achievements. (And for novices to Buddhism,'gaze in my direction'is a meditation instruction having to do withfocus and being open toinner messages and beliefs.)

Anintroductory chapter tells how the author came to meet Ramawhilesearching for a new spiritual teacher, and how her own ability to'gazein his direction' immediately revealed his 'siddha' ("Intheliterature of Buddhism and Hinduism, a siddha is a magical ormysticalpower attained by an advanced practitioner of meditation.")Months went by before she was to become his student and embark on ajourneythat would lead to an understanding of different perspectives onAmerican Buddhism and Eastern belief systems.

Dr. Lenz's actions in promoting his teachings and mission and expanding his students are documented in a vivid account based on theauthor'spersonal interactions and those of others involved in Rama'scircle: "This year, in 1982, what we're doing together, besidesjust having agenerally good time, is trying to get you to walk throughthe doorwaysto eternity. Because each time you walk through thosedoorways yourperfection will manifest in a new and exacting way. . . .What I'mtrying to do is to have you not be pedestrian or plebeian withthisstudy. That is to say, we're not simply studying how to get high inanew way. You're studying existence itself, to become it."

From his journeys across the country to spiritual revelations, socialchallenges, and changes, this is filled with insights onRama'sperspectives and approaches to spiritual growth: "He likes usfor the being that he sees can emerge after our layers are peeledback. He does not expect us to be holy, just honest."

It is this blend of Rama's wisdom and his life journey in teachinggroupsand individuals across the country that makes this biography sounique:part travelogue, part spiritual reader, and part biography, it'sacelebration of his life and perspectives as much as it is an accountofhow American Buddhism spread across the nation.

From musical projects to dance, lectures and meetings tomeditationencounters, Rama's wide-ranging influence powers not only hislife andthose of his students (including the author), but becomes thefocalpoint for the evolution and dissemination of Buddhist belief across thecountry.

Any interested inaccounts of Eastern religious thinking and growth will find thisbiography filled with unique, perceptive insights.

Diane Donovan, Midwest Review of Books

The US Review of Books. 2016 Eric Hoffer Book Award Winner - Spirituality

"Blue Skies Buddha" by Liz Lewinson, Mystic Buddha Publishing House - A biography of the spiritual leader, Rama, this book details the life and teachings of a man who not only brought his followers to a keener awareness of mysticism, but also urged them to take an active role in the contemporary world, urging participation in activities such as digital software development and even presidential politics. The book provides varied stories from students, family members and associates. Some recount seeing light flow from his hands, others saw him levitate, and yet others tell of his practical nature. Rama, whose legal name was Frederick Phillip Lenz, cautioned his students not to view him as a teacher, but to see everything in life as a teacher.

Brillant Historical Glimpse Into the New-Age Movement
By James Forgy
After the 1960s and the tumultuous upheavals of the times, came the gentler me-generation, the new-age seekers of the 1970s and 1980s. Unlike today, dropping everything to see the latest guru or practice the newest spiritual fad was commonplace. It was a different world then in the post-Vietnam era. Today's worries about middle-east wars, Wall Street bailouts, and NSA spying, were just background noise during the new-age movement, self-realization was the game -- and onto this colorful stage strode Dr. Frederick Lenz - Rama.

Rama was bold. He drove a Porsche, dated beautiful women, and was not embarrassed to say that he wished he and his students all become rich. Rama bravely took out full page ads touting a past-life resume going back to Atlantis. He offered a spiritual smorgasbord of topics, ranging from radical feminism to Buddhism to Castaneda's mysticism. Young bright-eyed spiritual aspirants couldn't help but notice this flashy well-dressed new-age guru inviting the thousands that saw him for a "journey into the void."

We don't hear much about Rama today, but he appeared on Phil Donahue, was given a full hour with Larry King, and sadly had the obligatory hit pieces produced against him by Dateline and Current Affair. Unfortunately, the abuses by some of the other gurus of this period created a media fascination for Rama who Newsweek even crowned as the "Yuppie Guru."

I feel 'Gaze' will become even more relevant as the years go by. For those of you too young to have experienced the new-age movement, this book will convey to you the zany optimism of the times, the eclectic world-view, and the lust for adventure that your typical spiritual seeker embodied. I envision historians of the future utilizing this book as reference, a guiding star that places us right in the center of new-age America.

If you are genuinely interesting in Buddhism, Vedanta, or mysticism this book is a treasure of thoughtful quotes by the PhD Guru Dr. Frederick Lenz. If none of that stuff interests you, it is still a great journey through the spiritual self-help renaissance of the late 20th century. Rama once predicted that Liz Lewinson, the author, would be his biographer. I think her detailed and driving storyline would have exceeded his expectations. So if you want to escape all the worries of the modern age, let this book transport you to the vibrant core of new-age America and beyond.

A rare and intriguing insight into the life and teaching of a modern spiritual teacher
By Francis Wang
I was a former student of Rama and have lived through most of the events in this book first hand. Since 1997, I had decided to break away from Rama and his group to pursue my own life interests. I viewed my time of study with the Rama group as interesting and life changing but ultimately had to choose my own path. As time passes, most of my experiences with the Rama group became a faded memory.

I started reading this book as a curiosity because I was bored. A third of the way through the book, I was amazing by the amount of details and efforts that went into the book. I became fascinated as the book literally took me on a ride to relive the eighties, and what a wild ride! I read the book in a few short days as I kept wanting to read and re-experience parts of my earlier life.

Over all, I thoroughly enjoyed this fast pacing book. It presented an honest look into one of the most intriguing and controversial spiritual movement of the 80 and 90's. Rama was a very unconventional teacher and his teaching often caused people to rethink their basic assumptions on spirituality. In a way, he reminded me of my other idols of our age - Bruce Lee, Michael Jackson and Steve Jobs. They were all not only filled with crazy passions about their lives, but were so unconventional in their approaches that they caused major disruptions in traditional values. They were people who believed in themselves, walked their own paths and did not compromise.

Groundbreaking! Great read!
By Mike Stillwell
I greatly enjoyed reading this fast-moving and enlightening biography. It was amazing to hear the “success story” of how someone meditated, progressed on the path and reached that rare goal - enlightenment. I was so impressed with this book that I bought copies for my friends and they loved them.

I loved hearing the accounts of Rama’s amazing meditations where gold light filled the auditorium and people’s minds were transformed from the mundane to the divine.

What really impressed me was his dedication to the Light and how he used his remarkable abilities to uplift, empower and transform the lives of everyone he came in contact with.

Excerpts from Rama’s talks clearly explained topics on meditation, mysticism, Buddhism, compassion and just having fun with life. Reading this book has strengthened and renewed my aspiration and practice.

Climate Change and Conflict Prevention: Lessons From Darfur, by J. Andrew Plowman

In “Climate Change and Conflict Prevention: Lessons from Darfur,” J. Andrew Plowman uses the Darfur conflict as a case study to examine how the effects of climate change might lead to future violent conflicts, and assesses the best way to prevent these conflicts. In his research, Plowman reviews the environmental security literature and applies events from Darfur to climate change models. This research suggests that climate change is likely to increase the potential for intrastate and communal conflicts, as populations adjust to changes in the environmental systems that support their livelihoods. Ultimately, Plowman’s examination of the Darfur conflict recommends a focus on structural conflict prevention through building adaptability to climate change and through the strengthening of institutions, particularly in fragile states.

Negotiation: A Mafia Love Story (Triple Threat Book 1), by Kit Tunstall, R.E. Saxton

Sarah Hastings has watched over her little brother most of her life, so when he gets in trouble with the mob, she approaches Roman Rinaldi about settling his debt. He isn’t interested in her first offer and negotiates with a counteroffer—one that has her in his bed and at his mercy. She may be in over her head, but it’s her heart she has to worry about as she starts to warm up to the seemingly ruthless mobster, who finds her equally compelling. Can there be a happy ending for a Cosa Nostra underboss and a sweet kindergarten teacher, or is their negotiation destined to end in bullets and heartbreak?

Please note this is a novella-length story featuring a mafia man, but it isn’t as dark as some of R.E.’s other mafia stories. This is the start of a new series unconnected to the previous mafia men.

You have got to read this book!
By Beth
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.....

I ABSOLUTELY Love this book. (I am very much so looking foward to the brothers books too.) It is the light vs the dark style starting off.
Enter Sarah, the good girl who is innocent in his world's ways (including being a virgin), she is a kindergarden teacher who is out to protect her brother who has done something very bad and she sacrifices herself so he can escape the payback for what he did. Roman, one of the men that Sarah's brother has betrayed and stolen from, he is a triplet and a bad boy (including being part of a mafia) When Sarah comes to Roman and gives herself in exchange for her brothers life, it starts out strained and to keep himself void of feelings for her, Roman tends to be cruel, however it is not really meant for her. Their agreement is she is to be at his beck and call whenever, wherever and whatever HE decides.
When Sarah is taken against her will by someone else "wronged" by Roman he and his brothers and there and while she is recovering from her ordeal, the "3 words" come from him first. Roman gets a HEA of sorts.

At the end of this book, R.E. Saxton states that each of the brothers will have their own book. I am SUPER excited about that, and I can't help but feel that this is really not the end of Roman and Sarah. I feel there is more to be discovered about them.

I am grateful for this opportunity I was given to read and review this book. Like I mentioned before, looking forward to Dominick's and Luca's books as well.

great story
By Rebecca
This mob story isn't as dark as some of the other ones, I mean it's graphic and has mob elements that will make you "oh my god" but it also has sweet moments. I loved Sarah she is fiest and not willing to let Roman call all the shots. Well he doesn't realize he isn't calling all of the shots until after she's gotten what she wants but maybe he's just letting her think that! lol I loved the HEA!
I received an ARC for my honest review.

I just love when an author gets it right
By gt
I just love when an author gets it right! Now this author knows the meaning of dark romance. The hero is truly a man who takes it to the next level with his woman. Roman did not just talk about what he was going to do to her, he did it. Hate books with threats that never materialize. Love the storage closet scene. This story had just enough sex to make it a great read, but not so much that it was all the book was about. Sarah was innocent, but Roman snatched that away and showed her a whole new world in the relationship between men and women. This couple began with a bargain to save her brother's life and ended with a strong, comforting love. I like the end where he knows how she feels about his life and allows her to make the choice of retribution. To me this showed his concern for her feelings, although he would done things differently. She was the one hurt; she decided whether or not there was payback. This is a really good fantasy that takes you away for a short while. Well done.

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the war on drugs is not what we see on our TV screens. In Chasing the Scream, Johann Hari shares his discoveries through the riveting true stories he uncovered on a 30,000-mile journey - from the founder of the war on drugs who stalked and killed Billie Holiday, to a transgender crack dealer in Brooklyn, to the only country that has ever decriminalised all drugs, with remarkable results. You will never look at addiction - or our society - in the same way again.

Review
Wonderful. I couldn't put it down Noam Chomsky Chasing the Scream is a remarkable book. It is moving and articulate and impossible to put down. Read it and demand our politicians take note Evening Standard Excellent ... Hari affirms the role he has already established for himself: a crucial voice in, as well as commentator on, the urgent cause of not merely "reforming" the way society deals with the drugs crisis but tearing it up completely Observer Intoxicatingly thrilling ... It will change the drug debate forever Russell Brand Superb journalism and thrilling story-telling Naomi Klein An absolutely stunning book. It will blow your mind, and blow you away Elton John This book is, forgive the obvious phrase, screamingly addictive. The story it tells, jaw-droppingly horrific, hilarious and incredible, is one everyone should know: that is all true boggles the mind fascinated and infuriates by equal measure. Johann Hari, in brilliant prose, exposes one of the greatest and most harmful scandals of the past hundred years Stephen Fry Johann Hari's book is the perfect antidote to the war on drugs, one of the most under-discussed moral injustices of our time. It combines rigorous research and deeply human story-telling. It will prompt an urgently-needed debate Glenn Greenwald Hari has conducted a mass of diligently pursued research for this book, talking to seemingly everybody from poor Mexicans who have lost loved ones amid the psychotic violence of gang warfare to the recently retired president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica ... The opposite of addiction isn’t sobriety. It’s connection.
By Peter Guither
As a drug policy expert, I have to admit, I wasn’t sure how well I’d do reading this book. I have a harder time getting into non-fiction books these days — I spend most of my time reading things online, and I’ve read so much about the war on drugs that it’s hard to get excited about reading a book about it.

But less than halfway through the first chapter, I couldn’t put it down – it’s an amazing read. Johann has done something really phenomenal with this book, by combining compelling storytelling with the factual highlights of the abominable history of the war on drugs, plus an undeniable blueprint for replacing that war.

For drug policy experts like me, it’s a great read with some fascinating personal perspectives, while filling in a few historical knowledge gaps. Definitely a reading highlight.

But if you're an average politically-aware reader who doesn’t know all that much about the drug war, I think you'll find it even more valuable. Here, in one book, you get good stories with all the verified information you need to become informed on this critical issue. I plan on buying a few copies to give to friends to read.

Additionally, you'll learn through detailed analysis that much of what you think you know about addiction is wrong.

Hari starts with the biggest villain of all — Harry Anslinger — by researching through all his diaries and files stored at Penn State University. I’ve known mostly about Anslinger’s war against marijuana, and now learned a few more things about what he did to get the war on drugs started in full force in the book.

Johann Hari provides us, throughout the book, with incredible access to individual players in the drug war. For the history, in addition to Anslinger, his research provides detailed insights into:
-- Billy Holiday, a jazz singer and drug user whose paths crossed with Anslinger’s, and
-- Arnold Rothstein, who invented the modern drug gang, and was the first major figure in organized drug crime in the United States.
And as Hari moved us to the present and future, these personal stories came from actual extensive interviews with an amazing array of individuals, including:
-- Chino Hardin, a drug dealer for years in Brooklyn, who started his business when he was 14 years old.
-- Leigh Maddox, a state trooper who later turned away from the drug war.
-- Rosalio Reta, a killer for the Zetas in Mexico, who resides in a prison in Texas.
-- Marisela Escobedo, who refused to accept her daughter’s murder by drug traffickers, and led protests in Mexico, until she was assassinated in front of the government palace (interviews were with family and friends).
-- Gabor Maté and Bruce Alexander, who developed new ways of looking at addiction, while working with addicts in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
-- Bud Osborn, a poet and homeless addict who helped transform that area of Vancouver and bring about the notion of rights for addicts.
-- Ruth Dreifuss, former President of Switzerland, who supported and promoted harm reduction approaches, including heroin clinics.
-- João Goulão, who helped lead a revolution in drug policy in Portugal.
-- José Mujica, president of Uruguay, who brought marijuana legalization to his country.
… and we learn about the players in the very different legalization approaches in Washington and Colorado.

Good stories, compelling arguments, and powerful facts (all fact-checked by the author and editors, with over 65 pages of notes, and a website with actual audio tapes of the interviews for those who want more).

I think this is the most important book about the drug war and addiction out today.

a punch in the gut...
By Anita
I read this in less than 12hrs, marking and making notes on every page. He manages to weave personal stories in and then zoom out to the larger issues at stake.
It's well-cited & has plenty of links, so any ideas of plagiarism or factiousness should be researched before throwing accusations. (Plenty of links, citations, etc.)
He's honest about his conflictions and changes in people's stories. I have buried more friends between 20-40 due to heroin/pills (& a few drunk driving,) than most can imagine. I know all too well that even people who "know better" can still become addicted. There is so much isolation in being an addict, causing further withdrawl from society & unwillingness to tell friends/family for fear of being judged. When you're an addict, one often feels as if there's nobody else who understands...except your sick addict running buddies. I was a professional, it took me almost a year to kick, and after a while I told everyone who didn't know. I was ostracized, except by 2 people who I NEVER expected to have any compassion for me (those were the friends I *thought* I'd lose. They gave me comfort & love.) Punative measures aren't helpful for addiction, mental illness, etc.
My fair city is cited a few times in this book as Anslinger was severely delusional in his pursuit to punish all addicts, and I see the faces of desperate addicts every day. I know how corrupt my PD is.
While he lays out info in a somewhat informal way (cited!,) it paints a human picture. It's a GREAT read in tandem with "The New Jim Crow." (Alexander.)

By P. Guerrero
A captivating read (Mr. Hari is an excellent writer) and fascinating many-faceted exploration of the origins and affects of the "war". I especially like that he periodically returns to the macro view so the reader can keep it in perspective. He makes a lot of sense. I know that being given drugs doesn't mean addiction is inevitable: after four surgeries and generous doses of demerol once the drugs were stopped and I had healed I had absolutely no desire for and hardly any memory of the drug itself. Drug use vs. drug addiction lies on a spectrum; its not a black or white thing. In order to move forward with good science and research this area needs to be liberated from the politics behind it so that the only agenda being served is the truth.. I hope that Mr. Hari continues to explore and write about the progress of the "war" and treatment. I am curious about one area he did not write about. Why is it that some children are traumatized/abused as children but do not become addicts? How did they dodge that bullet?
Some people say its all about choice but I want to know what inspires the choice.
