As a mom it is so easy to get overwhelmed
By Tracy L Carrothers
Caroline Greene's story of leaving the professional world to stay home with her children is one I relate to very well. I found myself saying "me too. me too!". As a mom it is so easy to get overwhelmed, sucked in by "shoulds," and operate from guilt that leads to resentment. Matter provides beautiful tools to guide you as you journey from overwhelmed and craving more to intentional, joyful living. From a place of honesty and vulnerability the author draws you in with her story while also giving you practical steps to guide you to living a life that lights you up.

By K. Desai
I will be forever grateful to Caroline Greene for sharing her story and writing this book. I used to feel overwhelmed by my life as a mom and resentful of giving everything to my family and not having time left to do things that made me happy.

For courses in Social Problems Frame social problems, and identify solutions, through the lens of politics. Always controversial, and ever more polarizing in today's political climate, social problems take up a huge chunk of our cultural bandwidth. Rather than simply presenting social problems as a series of facts, the sixth edition of Social Problems focuses on how people construct problems, and how they develop potential solutions, based on their political attitudes. Analyzing issues from liberal, radical-left, conservative, and libertarian points of view, author John Macionis explains why people disagree about what the problems are, and how one person's "problem" may well be another's "solution." Once you understand how social problems are defined politically, you'll be able to develop your own positions, and you'll have the knowledge you need to engage in solving social problems through activism and political discussion. Social Problems, Sixth Edition is also available via REVEL(TM), an immersive learning experience designed for the way today's students read, think, and learn.

OLD MEN DON'T CRY: A HONG KONG TALE OF SORROW, by TIM I GURUNG

Hong Kong was British colony until 1997.

Hong Kong/China relationship plays great significance.

Chan Hong was alone since childhood.

He learned Chinese traditions from Uncle Seven.

Eddie Ko and Tsang Adele were his only two friends.

He wanted to be a police officer.

How a story of love, friendship and devotion changed his life?

Part 1 – Why Hong Kong/China relationship plays such a great significance in the daily

life of Hong Kong people? What has changed from the colonial era to a new role as Hong

Kong Special Administrative Region or HKSAR of China? And what role has Hong

Kong played for China’s meteoric rise to the world’s stage?

Part 2 – Hong Kong itself plays as one of the two protagonists of the main story of this

book and it chronicles Hong Kong’s modern history as well as insights from 1980 to

2014.

Part 3 – How Chan Hong survived his childhood alone after losing both parents at a

very young age and achieved his ultimate goal of becoming a police officer.

Part 4 – How working under Uncle Seven’s tutelage taught him about Chinese

traditions and saved from a total oblivion.

Part 5 – How had his two friends Eddie Ko and Tsang Adele affected his life, changed

him for good or bad, and ultimately set the course of his entire life.

Part 6 – What he did for the love, friendship and devotion will warm your heart, his

sacrifices will pain your soul, and his sorrow will make you cry. Make sure you got a

box of tissue nearby while reading this book.

Look what other readers have to say about this book:

“Not every sadness yields defeat.”

“This book is not just a story but it also provides history and facts of Hong Kong.

The author has fused the past and present of Hong Kong blending with captivating

story telling skill.”

“For those people who have either lived in, or have an interest in Hong Kong, this is

a book that you will struggle to put down. I would like to congratulate the author

for producing such a riveting read - can't wait until the hard copy is released.”

“A must read for anyone who has had any association with Hong Kong or is

planning to visit there. This book has essentially two main characters - Hong Kong

and the narrator and we discover how their lives unfold over the years as the world

around them changes and how these outside influences affect their story. It is a sad

story but not for HK, just the narrator, so there is still hope as we come to the final

pages and feel satisfied. The author's suspenseful style keeps the pages

turning/scrolling and each chapter is a discovery with rich details and thorough

research.”

“For the reader keep a box of tissues if you do get emotional over the heartfelt

books, and remember to never take anything for granted.”

Review
In "Old Men Don't Cry" Tim Gurung offers a densely layered and many textured chiaroscuro of life in Hong Kong both before and after the handover to China in 1997. Unlike those who have approached the subject from a western perspective, he spurns the familiar panorama as viewed from the Peak and takes us down with him into the crowded tenements and back alleys where dwell those who actually created this astonishing city; many of them descended from immigrants, all of them with their eye on the main chance. - PETER MOSS/AUTHOR

From the Author
I came to Hong Kong in 1980 at 17 as a British Gurkha soldier, the illuminating and magic like night scene that I saw from the window of the landing plane at Old Kai Tak still remained as vivid and enticing as it was by then, and I have never left Hong Kong since then. We certainly cannot plan for everything in life, but sometime, things happened through serendipity are much better than planned ones and I cannot find another better example than my own life. I certainly didn't plan Hong Kong would be my home for so long, we were supposed to return Nepal once our service at the British Gurkhas army was over, and that was at least what we were fully aware of it by then. My time at the army didn't go well as planned, it felt as if I were a soul trapped in a wrong body, and it ended unceremoniously in 1993 after 13years of service. As I had already got a job as a quality control in Hong Kong, I returned here again and as the old saying goes - the rest is the history.

After the ex servicemen from British Gurkhas have rightfully won the right of stay in UK, almost all of the British Gurkhas and their families have moved to UK and only a few have remained in Hong Kong by now. I have not only spent my entire adult life here, but also raised my young family, established my business, livelihood as well as identity here. Hong Kong has always been good to me and my family, whatever I have today in my life, it is all because of Hong Kong and how immensely grateful I am for that. And I have always wanted to do something in return for Hong Kong.

Becoming a full time writer has given me that one opportunity, be able to do something about Hong Kong is a dream come true and I am always thankful. By sheer coincident or predestined, I couldn't say for sure, but one day when I saw this writing on a local paper where people were lamenting about the lacking of a good book about Hong Kong, and that clicked open the door of my mind just right there. Why not I try one? It wasn't a bad idea after all, I asked myself and started working on the book for the next 3 years, and the final result is at your hand now.

It is also a very hard to write type of book for me, I had to do a lot of researches for the materials, and I never worked so hard for any of my other books until this one. The main story line of the book is lachrymosely sad, I did it intentionally and I wanted to pour off all the pain, misery and sorrow of my life that had been welling up inside of me for years into it. I wanted it to be the first and last sad book of my collection so I could start writing happier books in the future again. I wanted to cleanse my mind, heart and soul once and for all and have a new start again in life. If the book has moved you to tear, please forgive me and just remember that for how many times did I have to go through it while writing it, and I can promise you that each and every drop of my tears was all worth of it.

Most of the English books written hitherto about Hong Kong are from the western point of views; it has money, glamour and business mostly in them; and everything was written about high life in Hong Kong. Nobody has ever tried to write a book from the grassroots level, about ordinary people like you and me, and especially about our emotions as well as travails of life at the bottom. It is my endeavor at the very best that I tried to be different, presented a unique book that represents simple people and tried my best to champion them. Most importantly, I wanted to write a new book that has nothing to do with money and it should only explore about basic human emotions as well as facts of our life.

All in all, it is a gift that I really wanted to give to Hong Kong as my gratitude, if people read, like and appreciate it, that will be undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements of my life, and I will always remain grateful to them as well as to Hong Kong.Thank you!

A sad tale about a mostly unfortunate life of an individual living in Hong Kong
By Andrew Cohen
I gave it three stars because while I found the story engaging, I found it difficult to associate meaningfully with the characters. I found them two-dimensional. For one thing, the author doesn't develop any dialog between the protagonist and the woman he marries, with the son he raises, nor with his male school friend. Also, it is a sad story, with few nourishing elements in it. Perhaps the protagonist has integrity but it is lacking in the other characters. I like novels where I can relate to characters and even empathize. I couldn't in this case. In fact, I found most of the choices the characters made were rather senseless. The author devotes half of the book to a running historical commentary on Hong Kong and its relation to the rest of the world (the first half of every chapter). While this was interesting, of the most part it had only a tangential relationship to the storyline.

A Hong Kong Experience for the reader
By Oh My Bookness
OLD MEN DON’T CRY; A HONG TALE OF SORROW by Tim I Gurung is a look at Hong Kong and China from a perspective of the “non-elite” , your “average joe”, the “hard and working to make a better life”, this is not a book about the embellishments from a media’s perspective, a tourist, a mainlander, the westerner. This is a story that showcases the history, traditions, the trials and tribulations of the people of a country, a island once but not to distant once considered and apart of the British colony.
It is said a writer reveals more about themselves than they intend to or want to admit, it’s a reflection of oneself, write about what you know. A writer writes about what they know, pours there heart and soul into it, but still as you read the emotions they may say they realized when writing, others surface. Intentional or not, what helps to make a good story is incorporating what you know, feeling it and being apart of it. Tim I. Gurung did just that, wrote about what he knew, experienced, poured everything into it, but also shared not only his own struggles, happiness and hardships , but a countries, a Islands, and the struggle to make it a better place, a place you want to stay and raise your family.
A change doesn’t happen overnight, but no one place is perfect and if we care to admit it or not, we take the good for granted forgetting the humble and the not so humble origins that make it that place. To stand strong speaks volumes for the human spirit, to keep enduring and hold your head up high even when things look bleak says a lot for the people, to stand United is what encourages growth, strength, and the willingness to see the good grow.
As you read OLD MEN DON’T CRY; A HONG TALE OF SORROW by Tim I. Gurung, you flip through the pages, the story takes place through the people’s eyes, through Hong Kong. Secondly you see through the eyes of the narrator, as it blends and weaves together moving through time, through the years you’re there as Hong Kong grows, see how much China plays a role in celebrations and traditions that unfold. This is not meant to be the upbeat story, it’s not meant to reflect or regurgitate information you find in any modern and history book. This takes a more personal approach, visually breath taking, just the right amount of suspense to keep the reader moving forward, with just right amount of information about the place to fall not just not under a book about tradition and culture, but a book that’s more historical than fiction.
The author uses just enough fiction to help the reader move through a story heavily based on history, personal experiences and growth and separation. If you want to read a book that takes you through the “real Hong Kong” but don’t want something that reads like a textbook or a essay that just presents the facts, this is a book I would recommend to read. I recommended to you readers who like historical fiction, to the readers who want to learn more about other cultures and traditions, to the reader who is looking for a read that’s true to itself. To the writer who feels deeply for it and to that rounded reader looking for something that presents itself from a point of view that takes a more original approach. For the people to the people, not glazed over to make you feel better, but a true and honest approach to make you feel.
For the reader keep a box of tissues if you do get emotional over the heartfelt books, and remember to never take anything for granted .
It’s a must read. One I recommend. But one thing to take into consideration since it’s heavily weighed on facts and experience, to you the characters must come off one dimensional but it does not lack the substance.

A historical story
By Yvonne
This is a sad story about the life of Chan Hong, even from an early age he struggled through life. After being deserted by his parents, he realised that he had to fend for himself and although was a pleasant child he found it difficult to make friends. This book follows him throughout his life, the friends he made, his life in the police force and all the way to his death.
At the beginning of each chapter was a brief history of Hong Kong, I found this confusing with the story as the dates wrote about did not match up with the years that the story was written about and I must admit skipping the history to carry on with the story.
The story itself was written well and you did have empathy with the main character, as a parent I could not even think of doing that to my child.
If you like memoires and history then this book is for you

New Directions in Public Opinion (New Directions in American Politics)From Routledge

The field of public opinion is one of the most diverse in political science. Over the last 60 years, scholars have drawn upon the disciplines of psychology, economics, sociology, and even biology to learn how ordinary people come to understand the complicated business of politics. But much of the path-breaking research in the field of public opinion is published in journals, taking up fairly narrow questions one at a time and often requiring advanced statistical knowledge to understand these findings. As a result, the study of public opinion can seem confusing and incoherent to undergraduates. To engage undergraduate students in this area, a new type of textbook is required.

The second edition of New Directions in Public Opinion brings together leading scholars to provide an accessible and coherent overview of the current state of the field of public opinion. Each chapter provides a general overview of topics that are at the cutting edge of study as well as well-established cornerstones of the field. Each contributor has made substantive revisions to their chapters, and three chapters have been added on genetics and biology, immigration, and political extremism and the Tea Party. Suitable for use as a main textbook or in tandem with a lengthier survey, this book comprehensively covers the topics of public opinion research and pushes students further to explore critical topics in contemporary politics.

Review

"Berinsky has brought together a world-class group of scholars working on cutting edge puzzles in the causes and consequences of public opinion. The book is an excellent resource for students, containing foundational insights about measurement and research design, electoral dynamics, and campaign media strategy. The largest contribution of this volume, however, may be the treasure trove of ideas for future research on the impact of group attitudes and identities in structuring our politics."

-- Nicholas A. Valentino, University of Michigan

"With its new and updated chapters, the second edition of New Directions in Public Opinion improves upon what was already an extremely valuable collection of essays from an impressive group of leading scholars. Berinsky’s masterful structuring of the book will allow it to be used as either a main text or a supplementary reader in a wide variety of courses. With just the right mix of analytical depth and topical breadth, this text will provide a solid grounding in six decades of public opinion research while also engaging and exciting students with its timely essays on pioneering new developments in the field."

-- Matthew Jacobsmeier, West Virginia University

"In the latest edition of Berinsky’s New Directions in Public Opinion, leading scholars of public opinion have written engaging chapters that survey recent research. Berinsky’s volume continues to be the best overview of the topic, perfect for students who want to learn about new developments."

-- Gabriel Lenz, University of California-Berkeley

Highly Recommended

Is it possible to forget that New York Interviews: First Thoughts by Richard Marranca is a collection of interviews with intriguing individuals such as Huston Smith, Jane Goodall, Galway Kinnell, E. L. Doctorow among others? The answer is yes because the conversational style of each interview makes the reader feel he or she is sitting at a table having a cup of coffee with Dr. Marranca and the likes of Jane Goodall and others and having a friendly chat. The "chat", however, just happens to be with some of the most famous artists, scholars, scientists and writers in the world.
This is a thought provoking book for those of us who have a hard time imaging the brilliant people of the world brushing their teeth or shopping for groceries. It adds a personal dimension to many of the people we have only seen in print. For example, Marranca covers such practical issues with Jane Goodall concerning her work with chimps such as "what was your camp like" and "what did you eat" and then moves to thought provoking questions such as how she created the most basic bond with the wild animals in their natural habitats and whether chimps "have a value system that could be defined as morality or spirituality". In an interview with Huston Smith, the author most known for his work The World's Religions and professor of comparative religion, a portion of the interview takes place over "beer and sandwiches" and a visit to Pete Seeger where they record a song Huston wrote for his granddaughter. The tone of the book deepens, however, when Marranca begins to probe Smith's "lifelong quest to understand spirituality". Marranca is able to ask just the right questions to have Smith help us understand this process. It was interesting to have an opportunity to get a glimpse into the mind of a poet in Marranca's interview with Galway Kinnell. One particular statement of Kinnell's really caused me to pause and think about things a little differently. He said, "I think I understand things sometimes better by articulating them as carefully as I can in a poem, and that's always a blessing to understand, even if it's understanding something awful. There's a certain joy in knowing."
There are many more poignant interviews in this fascinating book which I would highly recommend. While some books leave you feeling as though they missed the mark, New York Interviews: First Thoughts leaves the reader feeling satisfied as though at the close of each interview all the questions have been asked, a personal dimension has been uncovered and the reader is left feeling more knowledgeable in the process.

New York Interviews: My Thoughts
By Edward Londene
The entirety of this book cannot be understated it is wonderfully interesting. The swath of cultural and societal significance covered is duly noted. The reader is treated to delightful conversations with Jane Goodall, Salima Ikram, and Huston Smith to name but a few. The two I am most fascinated by are first, Huston Smith as his journey speaks volumes to me. Second, that of James Carse whose writing style I share, not his talent, but his process.
Huston Smith as is mentioned third paragraph in under the section entitled Huston Smith: Wisdom in a Bewildered World. States, "Huston has traveled the world in his lifelong quest to understand spirituality. He has studied with Zen Masters, monks, rabbis, priests, and believers of all sorts...." This is clearly coming from the discerned value of open mindedness. Having experienced so much over so many years it is clear the impact that mind set contributed to his text The Worlds Religions.
Richard Marranca's well informed and relevant questions glean the more interesting aspects of Huston Smiths experiences. The reader is also better informed and entertained in the same light. Of course hearing of the company Huston Smith keeps such as Aldous Huxley, Joseph Campbell, Pete Seeger there is no surprise as why its appeal exceeds expectation.

James Carse is the author of The Gospel of the Beloved Disciple written of the perspective of the Samaritan women. James has written several other books had his own TV program and taught Richard Marranca at NYU. The notion of continuing the Gospels and bringing them from perspectives of those less notarized is intriguing. The process Carse uses to discern each project, his taking on what is perceived to be beyond his capacity. To complete or even finish on time, and in this seeing it through to wherever it takes him. It makes all the difference too his work as whole. Is very familiar as it is a method I have felt was unique to me and now I see otherwise.
This carries through into his perceptions of picking the gospels back up and trying to give them a complete perspective. The Council of Nicea established in 325 C.E. By Constantine stopped the Christian tradition of writing these Gospels. James Carse is going back and reestablishing the tradition. The incomplete pieces and fragments are being woven into a richer and more enlivened retelling.

The work Richard Marranca and others have done for this book is extensive and I highly recommend this to everyone. It is filled with a bounty of facts and entertaining perspectives. The reader will undoubtably walk away with more than they arrived and for that it is worth its weight in gold.

The Philosophy of the Limit, by Drucilla Cornell

In The Philosophy of the Limit Drucilla Cornell examines the relationship of deconstruction to questions of ethics, justice and legal interpretation. She argues that renaming deconstruction "the philosophy of the limit" will allow us to be more precise about what deconstruction actually is philosophically and hence to articulate more clearly its significance for law. Cornell's focus on the importance of the limit and the centrality of the gender hierarchy allows her to offer a view of jurisprudence different from both the critical social theory and analytic jurisprudence.

Review
"This book is a major intellectual event. Nothing is more necessary and timely today than thinking through the possibility of a nonviolent relationship to the Other. "The Philosophy of the Limit does just that. Learned, eloquent, passionate, rigorous, this book is not just a brilliantly original appropriation of Levinas, Lacan, and Derrida for legal studies, feminism, and frontier work in ethics. It also turns back from the perspective of legal theory to make a signal intervention in the domains of philosophy, literary theory, and cultural studies."
-J. Hillis Miller, University of California, Irvine
"The book constitutes an important intervention in contemporary intellectual debates by showing the ethical and juridical relevance of trends which are often dismissed as amoral or destructive. By rephrasing Derridian deconstruction as "philosophy of the limit," Cornell draws attention to what eludes our grasp: to alterity and the "Other" who is not at our disposal but demands our recognition and respect. Forging an innovative vista, Cornell integrates insights of Derrida, Adorno, Lacan, and Levinas (as well as recent jurisprudence), underscoring their significance for a transformative moral and legal practice. Splendidly argued and lucidly written, the book helps to refocus and reorient ongoing discussions about modernity and postmodernity."
-Fred Dallmayr, University of Notre Dame
""The Philosophy of the Limit is a brilliant exercise in thinking through major themes of deconstruction. In her encounter with the representative critical thinkers of today, Drucilla Cornell challenges us to follow her complex arguments and powerful rhetoric up to the limits of thinkingfinitude."
-Agnes Heller, Hannah Arendt Professor of Philosophy, New School for Social Research

Significant limits
By Max Deutscher
The main line of argument in this book is important and may well be right. Cornell redefines the idea of the 'postmodern' so as to get clear of the usual rants about the theme. She modifies the kind of internal critique typical of many called 'postmodern' to that of the 'limit' that we come to in our attempts to rationalize our ethical and legal principles.
But, having cleared herself of the usual impediments like 'relativism' vs. 'absolutism' she persists in developing a serious critical attitude and method of approaching ethical and legal public controversies.
Chapter Five is particularly good - Cornell really hits her stride here, and rewards the reader for persisting with the first three chapters which are pretty heavy going at times unless you're already familiar with Hegel, Adorno and Levinas.
And the quality holds up right through to the end - on 'law dressed up as justice' and a final one on the relation of ethics, politics and jurisprudence.

Potentially important ideas not presented practically, hard to access
By Green Stone
I have no training or background in philosophy, am just a "regular person" who believes that philosophy can or should be relevant to our lives, and wanting to understand where the thread of western philosophy is going, and how those threads tie in to threads and themes in other areas, such as psychology, spirituality, politics, feminism. My brief immersion in philosophy, which seems to find validation in the work of such as Derrida and Cornell, suggests that about 2500 years ago, Greek philosophers put themselves in a "box" of conceptual abstraction, and began the long march towards an extraordinary bias against emotion in favor of barren reason, by which they separated themselves from "reality" and the world to a great extent. Western Philosophy has been struggling ever since then to get out of that box. This also seems to me, as Richard Tarnas has so well pointed out in his "Passion of the Western Mind", an overwhelmingly male/masculine enterprise. Women, who within their bodies experience more fully the mysteries of life through the process of giving life, would not have been so lacking in common sense as to have tried to reduce the whole world to barren concepts and abstractions.

I resonate with Derrida's and Cornell's elaboration of the inherent violence of "totalizing" systems, such as Hegel's, or ideals of community, and applaud, as someone in many ways an "Other" to various presumptuous and imperialist systems, the space increasingly being made in philosophy for the "Other."
However I think both of them miss something that may be more obvious to an outsider, namely, that the "Other" which they express so much concern about, can be seen in many ways to be none other than the "messy" but rich, juicy stuff of human emotion itself, which they continue to marginalize by philosophizing in a way that continues the same old, same old extreme bias towards "reason" and against emotion. Cornell may be more accessible than Derrida, but why express oneself in such a way that is difficult for anyone but professional philsophers to follow? If you are so concerned about "the Other", why not write FOR "the Other", meaning the outsider to the stultifying realm of dry, narrow, lifeless modern philosophy, who is still in touch with the actual substance matter of vital life? I'd suggest that it's only RATIONAL, concept-based systems can be "totalizing", and thus imperialist and exclusive: systems which inherently contain mystery, such as symbolic systems, mythical systems which allow room for the imagination to continue to create, are numinous, open, allow space for new forms to emerge, are not closed like dead concepts. We can solve the problem of the exclusion of the "Other" by ceasing to privilege reason above all other ways of knowing.

I was eager to see what Cornell had to say about the application of the Philosophy of the LImit to law. I found myself disappointed. Her commentary addresses a relatively high-level, abstract and theoretical aspect of the legal system, that of "legal interpretation", which may benefit by her thinking, but which is somewhat irrelevant to the ways that many "little people" suffer under the legal system. As the "folk" who suffer under the system can tell you, tHere are many problems with the legal system that have nothing to do with legal interpretation at high levels. There are all too obvious problems of law which have not to do with legal hair-splitting, but simply have to do, again, with leaving out "the OTher", namely emotions and intuitions and, in fact, the whole SPIRIT of the law, while enforcing the dead LETTER of the LAW. Combing through the archives of the innocent who have suffered under the injurious and idiotic letter of the law, some manifestations of which include the "nanny state" laws that attempt to protect people from themselves, the plethora of frivolous lawsuits and the seeming complete inability of the legal system to stop these idiot cases (how about a judge who had the guts to just dismiss idiot cases?) I submit that no legal system can EVER be just which can only function under the dead "letter of the law." Just like a philosophy based exclusively in reason, which leaves out all the emotions of human life, is fated from the start to be meaningless and dead, so also any attempt to articulate justice using reason only, and to enforce it systematically with the letter of the law, allowing no room for human emotion and intuition, is bound to be injust.

Well do those speak who would argue that they are "above the law": in fact, EVERYONE is "above the law" when "the law" is constituted of dead matter, and is wholly literalistic, legalistic, impersonal, in essence, a machine without a human being at the controls. No human being can be reduced to that which is justified to be subjected to such a dead machine. Therefore, if the law be literal and applied by the letter, it follows that every human being, constituted of a numinous and remarkable complexity and uniqueness which far exceeds such idiocy, is above the law. Until the law can accomodate context and individual uniqueness, we are all "above the law."

People suffer under the law in many ways other than through insufficiency of high levels of subtle argument and abstract, philosophical pondering, and I would argue that it is somewhat offensive, as well as suggestive of privilege, and replicative of the continuing Western Imperialist arrogance extreme bias towards dead "reason", not to notice this, to be thus oblivious to the plight of the "folk" of the world.

I just started reading this book and cannot put it ...
By Calob Taylor
I just started reading this book and cannot put it down! I had to take a break to share it with everyone. Michael Bailey has produced a book that everyone with disabilities and professionals in the disability community should read.

"Two strains of ugly that run too frequently through the professional community and hovers around people with IDD. The first of those is the habit of underestimating people. The other is a sort of proprietary sense of 'my self-advocates'" ("Self Advocate" is a term often used in the disability community to describe an individual with disabilities)

This quote resonated with me because of the sadness I feel when people with intellectual and developmental disabilities introduce themselves by telling me who their service provider is. Example: "Hello, I'm James from XYZ services." People with disabilities deserve an identity outside of their service provider and its not going to happen with out doing something about it.

It's time to get out of the way.
By Amazon Customer
Through this book, Michael Bailey has forced me to come to terms with what I've known for years: Our civil rights are only assigned to us by the wielders of power. If you identify outside the parameters of a white, straight, and male you aren't born with rights, they're assigned to you. If you have a disability you're forced to wait even longer to be assigned your rights. Mr. Bailey walks us through the 250 years of the fights for civil rights, but we are reminded that the fight is by no means over. Bailey reminds us that the time to listen to those affected by our social power structure is now, but its been that time since the beginning. People with disabilities don't need our help, they need us to get out of their way.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have always had something to say. Michael has listened. If you have ever encountered one of these individuals and thought, "There is a person of value. What is it like to be inside their head?" This book is for you! Thank you, Michael for bringing this offering to the world.

Deceptively Powerful
By Liam Frost
Ting has achieved something very important here, and very sneaky. His premise is deceptively simple, and one could be easily forgiven for mistaking this as liberal bait in an election year (just take a look at the title and the cover). That would be an unfortunate assumption. Assigning a conservative quote to each page, invariably accompanied by an older white male, Ting tidily assembles collections of once-considered thoughtful arguments in favor of slavery, male-only suffrage and other now-aborrhent opinions.

That these opinions were freely debated in mainstream public discourse will come as no surprise to most readers. But Ting's deft sleight of hand comes to the fore in two distinct ways. First, he is not content just reminding us that there were heinous conservatives littered throughout our history. He also wants to erase traditional battle lines. He does this by including the conservative views of liberal heroes like TR and Woodrow Wilson and challenging the political paradigms of liberal readers.

Second, with the inclusion of recent conservative opinions, it becomes clear that Ting is not just a leisurely student of history. Instead, Ting uses history as a tool to challenge our own thinking of current political debates.

This current Presidential race is illustrative of a new political dynamic in America. It has been eight long years since it appeared we had a nation seeking comity, unity and compromise. What we have now is a climate of conflict, distrust and outright fury. And I suspect that Ting prefers this landscape. In laying out historical conservative opinions, Ting is asking to feel the same about modern conservative opinions as we do about the older ones, and not to compromise or tolerate those opinions.

There are many questions Ting elicits in the subtext, including how should we feel about our heroes? The current debate at Princeton of using Woodrow Wilson's name is timely and complicates the view points of many liberals.

Ting as a curator has put together a litany of examples, working as a collection to challenge modern liberal thinking. It's powerful, timely and a worthwhile exercise in self-examination.

Why Are Consevatives Always Wrong?
By Morningchef
You would be misled if you thought that the book was about democrats vs republicans. Rather the author makes a case for progress. This is done in an elegant way through historical quotes. You can enjoy this book in small snippets or devour it in a longer sitting. Be ready for shocking quotes, many from notable politicians even some in recent history. At times I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. I am definitely inspired to vote, and will share this book with friends.

Clever and cogent, this book will be a conversation ...
By Chris J Tobar-Dupres
Clever and cogent, this book will be a conversation starter, be you conservative, liberal, or numbed out. Substantive and silly by turns, there is little to laugh about in the range of quotes and history Ting assembles here. Nevertheless, laugh you will and the laughter itself will be transformative, revealing the tender points and vulnerabilities of participatory democracy, citizenship, and privilege. Bravo.
