Will Skynet rule us all?

In The Resistance, journalist Joel Achenbach discusses the digital revolution and what it means for humans. Most people, despite some reservations, have embraced the new technologies. There are, however, those who have raised objections of various sorts, with the most apocalyptic of these fearing that machines could ultimately destroy mankind, as with the fictional Skynet, the artificial intelligence (A.I.) network in the Terminator films.

Achenbach mentions several active naysayers and the rationale for their dissent. They're not yet a highly organized movement but more like a loosely knit confederation. Their concerns vary, but typically they fear that artificial intelligence could pose a threat to humanity unless we remain fully in control of our creations. Others, more optimistic, believe that technological progress will eventually result in a happy merger of human and machine intelligence.

Should we be worried in light of the fact that more than half a century of research on A.I. has not produced a conscious, willful machine? Or should we worry because there is often no one person who understands exactly how complex A.I. systems are operating at any given moment, leaving open the possibility of catastrophic failures?

It's an intriguing look at the current state of artificial intelligence, letting the reader decide if A.I. is a serious threat to mankind, or if it's a potential boon to human happiness.

Interesting articles on the role of computers in our lives

This short ebook is a combination of two in depth articles about questions and concerns people are raising about the role of computers and computational algorithms in our current and future world. The articles are well-written and thought-provoking. I would have liked a little more connection between the two articles. The short essay at the end attempts to wrap things up, but a bit of exploration about the link between the concerns of the people in the two articles would have made this an even stronger book. Still, I enjoyed the articles and I like the idea of using the ebook format to bring longform journalism to a wider audience. This book is definitely worth your time.

The Discourse on the Method (French: Discours de la méthode) is a philosophical and autobiographical treatise published by René Descartes in 1637. Its full name is Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences (French title: Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la vérité dans les sciences). The Discourse on The Method is best known as the source of the famous quotation "Je pense, donc je suis" ("I think, therefore I am"), which occurs in Part IV of the work. (The similar statement in Latin, Cogito ergo sum, is found in Part I, 7 of Principles of Philosophy.) The Discourse on the Method is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the development of natural sciences. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been studied by Sextus Empiricus, Al-Ghazali and Michel de Montaigne. Descartes modified it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Descartes started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions. The book was originally published in Leiden in the Netherlands. Later, it was translated into Latin and published in 1656 in Amsterdam. The book was intended as an introduction to three works Dioptrique, Météores and Géométrie. La Géométrie contains Descartes' first introduction of the Cartesian coordinate system. That the text was written and published in French rather than Latin, which was the language in which philosophical and scientific texts were most frequently written and published (as were most of Descartes' other works), is worth noting. Together with Meditations on First Philosophy (Meditationes de Prima Philosophia), Principles of Philosophy (Principia philosophiae) and Rules for the Direction of the Mind (Regulae ad directionem ingenii), it forms the base of the epistemology known as Cartesianism.

Rene Descartes (1596 - 1650) was a renowned mathematician, scientist, and philosopher born in La Haye, France. He believed that all natural phenomenon, matter, and motion can be defined through mathematics. La Geometrie (1637) is his most famous work of mathematics. Well written collection of essays examining the zeit geist (pun intended) of sociologist/philosopher Max Weber. My own familiarity with Weber came from reading Talcott Parson's translation and commentary that my older sister had informatively underlined and provided notes on in the margins when she was in university. We no longer have the book and how much I retained is at this point a mystery, however the lessons of hard work, concern for others, a modicum of self denial and the notion of different cultural dispositions pertaining to group membership stuck with me. The other aspect of Weber that I admired was his lack of absolute historical determinism to his views, a stark contrast to Marx and Spengler. Weber's theory was an approximation of probable causes that satisficed the outcome and provided a middle road between left and right.

There are 8 contributions in all plus an excellent prefatory note by editor Lutz Kaelber which concisely summarizes each. Harmut Lehmann leads in Ch 1 with a discussion of Weber's academic circle and his response to critics, in particular Sombart who held similar views, but disagreed with Weber's assessment that modern capitalism originated with Protestant Reformers.

Chapter 2 "Dimensions of the Protestant Ethic" by Martin Reisebrodt I found more intriguing. Apparently there were two versions, one written in 1903-04 and the other published in 1920, and while not very different in content, Reisebrotd explains the context in which they appeared should result in a different interpretation. The earlier edition was a standalone piece; the latter was published with Weber's further comparative studies of the Economic Ethics of other World Religions. Further the 1904 mileue was much more hopeful and progressive. Post WW I Germany was tended more to romanticism, naturalism and experimentation much like the mid 1960s. The essay also examines the relationships of Weber's family life, in particular to his wife Marianne, his father Max Sr. his mother Helene, all of whom Reisebrodt sees as represented prototypically in Weber's work.

For historical interest Lawrence Scaff's look at Weber's foray into America was quite enjoyable and informing, including details of the land rush in the Indian Territory, a topic I've now earmarked for looking into. He relates Weber's fascination with the lore of the American frontier, not an uncommon European fascination, especially for Germans, and his hasty exit from the Hotel Royal in Oklahoma city when told of an dispute involving a newspaper editor (Frank Greer) he was about to meet where the editor had brandished a gun in order to procure a retraction from a rival paper. Scaff speculates quite bit on who Weber might have met or read about when he was in America, and also discusses Longfellow and Benjamin Franklin whom Weber regarded as iconic. He also cites Weber on the practice of developers setting up churches in frontier towns for the express of building communities of trust. (pp108)

Editor Kaelber's own contribution was thought provoking . He spends time explaining and rebutting arguments about Weber from another academeic Jere Cohen, who does not have a paper in the book. He does it so well that he convinced me that Cohen has a better argument than he does! Whereas Kaelber searches for Protestant ascetism and business ethic in a pure Weberian form, Cohen argues that in absolute terms it need not exist, that Weber only argued for tendencies and overall approximations.

Philip Gorski's "The Little Divergence" was an unexpected bonus. In the 15th century if one took a survey of the planet then Islam was both the present and the future. You had the Ottomans dominating North Africa and Asia Minor, the Safavids controlling Persia and the Mughals in the Indian subcontinent reaching east until they met a declining and insular China and SE Asia. The decline of Islam is a problem that Bernard Lewis examined in "What went wrong". Instead Gorski finds Weber asking a different question - "What went right?" in European civilization that allowed it to "liftoff" and become a dominant force. The "Little Divergence" was the Protestant Reformation and the Age of Exploration starting in the 1600. The Great Divergence was the Industrial Revolution some 200 years later. Weber favored the argument that the former was key to the latter. Gorski discusses why London, Antwerp and Amsterdam became the major centres of the European economic miracle and not Florence, La Rochelle or Paris. New World silver is one factor as it was (apparently) the only commodity that the Far East was interested in trading for with the Europeans, but more significant was the work ethic and social structure of Huguenots, Calvinists, Lutherans and other reformers.

Overall a good book that did what I hoped it would and a bit more. If you are interested in Weber and his ideas either for personal interest or a school essay it is worth picking up. To fine tune the rating - 4.3 */5.

About the Author
Larry Kilham founded three companies and is a holder of three patents. Many of those efforts required innovative use of computers, and as early as the 1960s he was researching artificial intelligence. He graduated from the University of Colorado and MIT. He has written seven books. Two are about creativity and invention, two are about robots and digital media, and three are a series of adventures featuring near-future AI. Larry and his wife Betsy live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and enjoy international travel. He is a corporate consultant, a member of the American Chemical Society, and is keenly interested in automation, ecology, global resources and the science of complexity. Excellent and enjoyable reading

Excellent and enjoyable reading. I'm a long-time Alice in Wonderland aficionado and this book got my attention with its title, Digital Rabbit Hole. Indeed, teens and millennials and the younger generations is falling into the "rabbit-hole" of smartphone addiction, and is losing the ability for normal conversation. One wonders where this trend will lead. Larry Kilham provides insights into the problems and possibilities.

The book then continues with other accelerating changes that are enveloping modern society - artificial intelligence, robotics, the all consuming Internet - he calls it the "Knowosphere". Where will the future lead as modern humans fall down this "rabbit hole"? What are the possibilities? Read the book!

The challenge of our techno-culture

Kilham provides a great insight of our addiction to smartphones, the I of T and electronic devices. We are changing our culture in the twenty-first century to become connected through electronic devices that provide us a portal to the world. He writes of our pending loss of communicating with each as human beings one to one. No longer do we share full thoughts from hypothesis to conclusion but live in a world of tweets of 140 characters and what we can text with emoji signs. Will we become extinct as a culture of thinking individuals who share a conversation in complete and grammatically correct sentences with each other? A must read to view how we hold our future interactions.

Funny, quirky, well written and action packed!

I'm a big fan of Kate Rudolph's strong female characters and she doesn't disappoint with Sandra Khee in Bear in Mind. Sandra is a psychic secret agent for an organization called The Sector. After suffering an injury while on mission she is sent home and released from duty. Sandra moves to a quiet little Montana town, looking for peace and quiet for her overstimulated mind, and literally stumbles across Derek when she "hears" a voice in the woods. Derek is a bear shifter living the quiet life when Sandra moves in and turns his world upside down. I ADORED Derek. His habit of making a list of options before he speaks completely cracked me up. His character starts off kind of bumbling and sweet, but develops into the strong Alpha protector when Sandra is threatened by trouble from her past. Sandra is strong and intelligent, but doesn't blow off the idea of help from a strong protector just to prove she is a capable woman (that is one of my biggest pet peeves in female lead characters). We were also introduced to a host of interesting and quirky secondary characters that I hope will have their stories told in future books. I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This story focuses on; SANDRA, a sexy, curvy dark-haired beauty psychic; DEREK, a strapping heart-stopping mysterious, grizzly-shifter.

What you'll find in this story; a cast of remarkably impressive and engaging characters, fabulous story-line, picturesque and dynamic vivid scene descriptions, superb banter, gut-wrenching moments, emotions spiral, mystery, camaraderie, filled with action, gripping suspense, pent-up rage, life-threatening incidents, horrific danger, heart-pounding toe-curling sensual romance, and a heart-melting conclusion that leaves you content and wanting more..

Sandra has been let go from her six year job for the Sector. She moved to Montana to get away from the hustle and bustle of a large town. Being a psychic and able to read the minds of others she wanted a bit of peace in her life. Derek and Sandra meet under strained circumstances, but soon become more than friends. Someone has hacked into the Sector’s computer, and has found out where Sandra now lives and is coming after her. A former agent of Sector has come to warn Sandra of the onslaught of danger, and Derek swears to protect her.

WOW/SPECTACULAR-fast paced well written creative read by a truly gifted author. The awesome characters, powerful scene descriptions, intriguing plot, and fantastic dialogue keep you hooked from start to finish. The romance blazes with fiery passion and is filled with undying devotion. I relished this story as it was a most entertaining read. If you treasure fantasy romance this is certainly a terrific book for your library. {I was gifted this book, and this is my completely honest review}. In the world of fantasy romance the possibilities are endless and always fascinating. Without reservations I recommend this book.

Well, there's a bit more to it than that....and it' a really thrilling ride along the way! The story's great, the writing's excellent, the characters are awesome....makes me hope there will be more with these characters (HINT). Thanks for a thrilling afternoon read, Kate...the ride wouldn't have been nearly so much fun without all the twists and turns along the way!

He was awarded the Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award by the American Sociological Association, an honorary doctorate from LaTrobe University in Australia, and the Robin Williams Lectureship from the Eastern Sociological Society. His best-known work, The McDonaldization of Society (8th ed.), has been read by hundreds of thousands of students over two decades and translated into over a dozen languages. Ritzer is also the editor of McDonaldization: The Reader; and author of other works of critical sociology related to the McDonaldization thesis, including Enchanting a Disenchanted World, The Globalization of Nothing, Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society, as well as a series best-selling social theory textbooks and Globalization: A Basic Text. He is the Editor of the Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2 vols.), the Encyclopedia of Sociology (11 vols.; 2nd edition forthcoming), the Encyclopedia of Globalization (5 vols.), and is Founding Editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. Reads Like a Mystery Novel

I found it propelling and entertaining. Join the search for who these ancients were and find the kykeon.
I used to think Greek mythology was just nonsense authored by ignorant primitives. With the missing key provided by Carl Ruck, mythology opens to new depth. The idea of mushrooms being central to ancient greek culture at first seemed a bit alien but I cracked open an introductory mycology text by C.J Alexopoulos and the first paragraph is about how Perseus founded Mycenae because of the mushrooms he found there. Mushrooms he drank the water from. Ruck has plenty of examples of mushrooms in central and important works of Greek art including the Alexander the Great's daughter's tomb (a mushroom).
Seems classical scholars don't like the idea that sex or hallucinogenic mushrooms need to be discussed to understand the ancient Greeks. To me the history and mythology is nonsense with out it.
This book is obviously ahead of it's time because it has been poorly received. In ten years this will be a classic and the critics will pretend they liked it from the beginning.

Where are the footnotes?

A very intriging book, but, without footnotes, none of the ancient sources or modern references can be traced. Let's hope that a scholarly version of this book will be published someday.

AN “EARLY” COLLECTION OF RUSSELL’S ESSAYS ON PHILOSOPHICAL SUBJECTS

Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872-1970) was an influential British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and political activist. In 1950, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, in recognition of his many books such as A History of Western Philosophy, The Problems of Philosophy, The Philosophy of Logical Atomism, The Analysis of Mind, Our Knowledge of the External World, Human Knowledge: Its Scope and Limits, Mysticism and Logic, etc.

He wrote in the Preface, “The volume to which this is a preface is essentially a reprint of a book, with the same title, published in 1910. However, two essays in that volume, namely ‘The Free Man’s Worship’ and ‘The Study of Mathematics’ were reprinted in ‘Mysticism and Logic’ and are therefore not included in the present volume. They are replaced by an article on history and one on Poincare’s ‘Science and Hypothesis.’”

He wrote, “Some have contended that ‘good’ means ‘desired,’ others that ‘good’ means ‘pleasure,’ others again that it means ‘conformity to Nature’ or ‘obedience to the will of God.’ The mere fact that so many different and incompatible definitions have been proposed is evidence against any of them really being definitions; there have never been two incompatible definitions of the word ‘pentagon.’ None of the above are really definitions; they are all to be understood as substantial affirmations concerning the things that are good. All of them are, in my opinion, mistaken in fact as well as in form, but I shall not undertake here to refute them severally.” (Pg. 20)

He argues, “among physically possible actions, only those which we actually think of are to be regarded as possible. When several alternative actions present themselves, it is certain that we can both do which we choose, and choose which we will. In this sense all the alternatives are possible. What determinism maintains is that our will to choose this or that alternative is the effect of antecedents; but this does not prevent our will from being itself a cause of other effects. And the sense in which different decisions are possible seems sufficient to distinguish some actions as right and some as wrong, some as moral and some as immoral.” (Pg. 42)

He observes, “If we really believed that other people’s actions did not have causes, we could never try to influence other people’s actions; for such influence can only result if we know, more or less, what causes will produce the actions we desire. If we could never try to influence other people’s actions, no man could try to get elected to Parliament, or to ask a woman to marry him: argument, exhortation, and command would become mere idle breath. Thus almost all the actions with which morality is concerned would become irrational, rational actions would be wholly precluded from trying to influence people’s volitions, and right and wrong would be interfered with in a way in which determinism certainly does not interfere with them. Most morality absolutely depends upon the assumption that volitions have causes, and nothing in morals is destroyed by this assumption.” (Pg. 43-44)

In an essay on Pragmatism, he quotes William James: “If I say, ‘Either accept this truth or go without it,’ I put on you a forced option, for there is no standing place outside of the alternative.’” But Russell then comments, “This statement appears to us to be contrary to many of the plainest facts of daily life. If, in walking along a country road, I come to a fork where there is no signpost and no passer-by, I have, from the point of view of action, a ‘forced’ option. I must take one road or other if I am to have any chance of reaching my destination; and I may have no evidence whatever as to which is the right road. I then ACT on one or other of the two possible hypotheses, until I find someone of whom I can ask the way. But I do not BELIEVE either hypothesis. My action is either right or wrong, but my belief is neither, since I do not entertain either of the two possible beliefs. The pragmatist assumption that I believe the road I have chosen to be the right one is erroneous.” (Pg. 84)

He later states, “We have thus the following objections to the monistic theory of truth: (1) If no partial truth is quite true, this must apply to the partial truths which embody the monistic philosophy. But if these are not quite true, any deductions we may make from them may depend upon their false aspect rather than their true one, and may therefore be erroneous. (2) It is a consequence of the monistic theory that the parts of a whole are not really its parts. Hence there cannot be any genuine whole on this theory, since nothing can really be a whole unless it really has parts. (3) The theory is unable to explain in what sense one partial judgment is said to be true and another false, though both are equally partial. (4) In order to prove that there can only be one coherent whole, the theory is compelled to appeal to ‘experience’, which must consist in knowing particular truths, and this requires a notion of truth that the monistic theory cannot admit.” (Pg. 138-139)

As a translation student I think this book is quite tough to read because it is very dense and hard to understand in some occasions. I think it's a good book in the way that it classifies translation and its varieties, but it is not the kind of book to read on holidays.

A book well worth reading

An excellent book. The authors present a possible solution to an unresolvable and serious problem. Many might consider this solution unlikely and naïve, but yet deserves serious consideration. The book is also a wonderful and well written short history lesson.
