I recommend this book to anyone who is planning a visit ...

I recommend this book to anyone who is planning a visit to Cuba. I also recommend it to anyone who has visited Cuba as a tourist, but wants to learn more.

This is a well-written memoir by an exile who left Cuba as a boy of nine and returned as "an old man looking back on his life and trying to make some sense of it all." And, he accomplishes just that.

The book chronicles his return visit to Cuba one day at a time. Throughout this chronological narrative, he intersperses recollections of his boyhood in Cuba, his adolescence in Chicago, and his adulthood in Japan, Costa Rica, and the Middle East. An exile twice-over (exiled by force from Cuba, exiled by choice from the U.S) Ness is in position to make informed cross-cultural and historical comparisons as he walks the streets of Havana in search of his birth certificate. By day he taxis around the city and visits landmarks and government offices: reminiscing and talking politics with those he meets; by night he bar-hops and enjoys the jazz clubs, indulging his passion for politics, but also his passion people and for their stories.

Ness is a guy you can root for. He's likable, even as he talks about issues which I've seen lead to screaming matches and fist fights. His opinions are balanced by a humanity that never loses sight that people are more important than politics. This same humanity defines the form in which he expresses opinions: anecdotes and vignettes that are more interesting and more poignant than pure political-science. This is not an academic study, and by holding tight to the personal, he succeeds in making points while entertaining the reader.

As for the authenticity of the book, I've been to Cuba and can vouch for the accuracy of Ness' portrait. When it comes to the facts, he gives the facts. As for whether you agree with the conclusions he draws, that's up to you. But, even if you disagree (and you probably will, at least in parts) you'll still enjoy the book.

I recommend this book to anyone who is planning a visit to Cuba, or to anyone who has visited Cuba as a tourist, but wants to learn more.

An intimate journey into the great divide of the Cuban heart

A Cuban exile returns to Cuba after 50 years and in nine days converses with all kinds of people, from taxi drivers to bartenders to government officials to prostitutes and to more about life under the setting sun of the Castro regime. Most intriguing of all is the conversation the exile has with himself, as he tries to make sense of it all, relating what he hears and sees to his own personal history of exile. The conclusion to this odyssey reveals both the empty shelves of a Cuban store under a repressed totalitarian regime and the alienation of a WallMart capitalism gone too far in the USA.
Gabriel Ness's book should be required reading for anybody thinking of visiting Cuba. Somehow, the author weaves a lot of practical advice in his narrative. Being an exile myself, there were sections of the book that brought me to tears. The story of his exodus opened up some old wounds that needed to be bled...and healed.

What an engaging mix of history, politics and good old fashioned story telling! I picked up this book hoping to learn something that I didn’t already know about Cuba … and I did; but I also learned a lot about my own country, as well. I found this book to be not only entertaining, but also very eye-opening and thought provoking. I recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting and fun-to-read historical perspective on Cuba and its relationship with the U.S.A.

Angry, Inspired, and Educated

I must admit, I was hesitant to read Kelly's book. After viewing some reviews, I had come to my own conclusion that it would be a foul-mouthed, dismissive, angrily written book that might replicate the comments section of a YouTube video. But I gave Kelly the benefit of the doubt (especially since he studied theater and his book had a number of Shakespearian quotes, which I was raised on thanks to my English teacher father) and I'm very happy I did.

Yes, Kelly is mad. And when you read his book you can understand why. The prejudice, misogyny, abuse, discrimination, hate, vitriol, and killing carried out in the name of religion is nothing to put off anymore. Kelly has a well resourced story to tell to point out all the shortcomings of faith and inevitably asks the all too important question "What good can a person do that does not require religion?"

I am inclined to compare Kelly's writing to Hitchens' "god is Not Great," but it's better, and deserves better, than that. Where in Hitchens' work I felt the tone was "you SHOULD know this," with his nose in the air, Kelly's book reads "it's IMPORTANT that you know this," with excitement and fervor. Kelly presents us with a book that displays passion for a necessity to educate and understand; know the history so we are not doomed to repeat it.

I can honestly say that I lost any hesitance to read Kelly's book within a few pages. This is the type of criticism that any subject deserves to have; to really know that those scorned are not so quick to forget, and the scars do not fade and are not so easily covered up. Kelly has a voice that is important to hear and I look forward to future pieces from him.

Great book

I have read thousands of books in my life and this is the first time I have ever written a review.
I have read many books on this subject - Hitchens, Dawkins - I would rank Joshua Kelly right up there with them. I found his style very easy and informative. As one who was raised with a similar past – it is refreshing and encouraging to see that there are others who question the accepted religious teachings forced on millions. I appreciate the fact that Joshua Kelly does not single out any religious group for “persecution” and he provides very clear and thought provoking information.

I have purchased a couple other copies of this book and given it to friends and family and encourage EVERY one to read this book.

"Oh your God, The Evil Idea that is Religion" offers an in depth, passionate, at times angry but ultimately compassionate argument against the real and potential dangers of religion. The author, Joshua Kelly, utilizes factual data, sarcasm, witty humor, and the knowledge of his predecessors and contemporaries to both entertain and inform the reader. Whether or not you agree with all the points within the book, it will challenge you to rethink preconceived or indoctrinated notions; setting the stage for intelligent and educated debate on the role religion currently plays within our lives and country(and whether it should continue to do so). As a believer, I highly recommend for atheist and believer alike.

About the Author
Described as one of the most influential figures in human history, Karl Marx was a German philosopher and economist who wrote extensively on the benefits of socialism and the flaws of free-market capitalism. His most notable works, Das Kapital and The Communist Manifesto (the latter of which was co-authored by his collaborator Friedrich Engels), have since become two of history s most important political and economic works. Marxismthe term that has come to define the philosophical school of thought encompassing Marx s ideas about society, politics and economicswas the foundation for the socialist movements of the twentieth century, including Leninism, Stalinism, Trotskyism, and Maoism. Despite the negative reputation associated with some of these movements and with Communism in general, Marx s view of a classless socialist society was a utopian one which did not include the possibility of dictatorship. Greatly influenced by the philosopher G. W. F. Hegel, Marx wrote in radical newspapers from his young adulthood, and can also be credited with founding the philosophy of dialectical materialism. Marx died in London in 1883 at the age of 64.

MARX'S FIRST MAJOR "ECONOMIC" BOOK

This 1859 book was the first serious economic work of Karl Marx (1818-1888), and expounds ideas which were later developed in much greater detail in his magnum opus, Capital: A Critique of Political Economy. Modern Library Giant G-26.

Hie Preface gives an excellent brief summary of his position, observing that men "enter into ... relations of production appropriate to a given stage in the development of their material forces of production... The mode of production of material life conditions the general process of social, political and intellectual life. It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but their social existence that determines their consciousness... but the productive forces developing within bourgeois society create also the material conditions for a solution of this antagonism." (Pg. 20-22)

He asserts that every commodity has a twofold aspect: "use-value," and "exchange-value" (pg. 27), and that quantitative differences of the commodities as exchange values are "merely the quantitative differences of the labor embodied in them." (Pg. 30)

He states that "Bourgeois society is the most advanced and complex hsitorical organization of production." (Pg. 210)

This book will be of signficiant interest to those studying the development of Marx's economic ideas.

Another five star book, by Marx? Who would have thought!?

There's a lot of good information in this book, and it also serves as great source for watching Marx develop his devastating critique of Political Economy. This book is most famous for the preface, where Marx re-introduces the world to his theory of Historical Materialism, and he develops this cogent theory in roughly 250 words. Marx was a true master of saying a whole lot, with very little. But, as anyone whose read his larger works knows, he also can say very little, with a whole lot.

If one actually reads the preface in its entirety, there's no mistaking Historical Materialism for the neo-deterministic theory many liberals, and totalitarian Marxists think it is. Marx is very careful and deliberate with his wordings, about conditioning, and influence, not determination, and necessity.

The rest of this book serves as a fantastic introduction to the first three chapters of Capital. Moreover, he develops his theory of money in this book in a way that makes it completely compatible with a non-gold standard system, to the chagrin of Austrian economist!

If you're a bit scared to enter the dialectical waters of Capital Volume I, this is a great place to start. Abstract labor, and value, are explained with analytic clarity, not dialectical profundity. Although it needs to be pointed out that this book still isn't his complete theory of exploitation, labor, labor power, and socially necessary labor time. This cannot serve as a replacement to Capital, merely a good introduction.

This edition is only a poorly xeroxed copy of the original text. The resolution is bad and the page diagram is terrible. The format is broken, you can only see the page sideways and half of the text per page. I do not recommend the download.

I meddle not with the question, I say, whether trade be declined or not; but I may easily show the people of England, that if they please to concern themselves a little for its prosperity, it will prosper; and on the contrary, if they will sink it and discourage it, it is evidently in their power, and it will sink and decline accordingly.
You have here some popular mistakes with respect to our woollen manufacture fairly stated, our national indolence in that very particular reproved, and the consequence laid before you; if you will not make use of the hints here given, the fault is nobody’s but your own.
Never had any nation the power of improving their trade, and of advancing their own manufactures, so entirely in their own hands as we have at this time, and have had for many years past, without troubling the legislature about it at all: and though it is of the last importance to the whole nation, and, I may say, to almost every individual in it; nay, and that it is evident you all know it to be so; yet how next to impossible is it to persuade any one person to set a foot forward towards so[Pg vii] great and so good a work; and how much labour has been spent in vain to rouse us up to it?
The following sheets are as one alarm more given to the lethargic age, if possible, to open their eyes to their own prosperity; the author sums up his introduction to it in this short positive assertion, which he is ready to make good, viz., That if the trade of England is not in a flourishing and thriving condition, the fault and only occasion of it is all our own, and is wholly in our own power to mend, whenever we please.

After reading "Common Sense" I think Thomas Paine is my favourite founding father. What he wrote about over 200 years ago still rings true today. Reverting to a simpler form of government with a more hands on approach makes sense, and that is what Paine spent his entire life advocating for. He warns on multiple occasions what will happen if government gets too big and it sure does look like his warnings having come to fruition. He basically proclaims that the British government is getting too big, so the US must break free of their rule and start a small but necessary government of their own. However, in reality, now that we are 200 years in the future our government has seemingly gotten even bigger than the British government that Paine advocated against. "Common Sense" is a brilliant book that can be read in one sitting. Well done kindle version.

Tim Delaney is a Professor at SUNY Oswego. He has taught graduate and undergraduate sport sociology courses; has published numerous books, articles and book reviews; and has twice served as president of the New York State Sociological Association. He lives in Auburn, New York.

About the Author
P. W. Singer is a strategist and senior fellow at the New America Foundation, founder of the technology advisory firm NeoLuddite, the author of multiple award-winning books, and a contributing editor at Popular Science. Allan Friedman is a visiting scholar at the Cyber Security Policy Research Institute in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at George Washington University, where he works on cybersecurity policy. Wow, EXCELLENT text.

I have been teaching for nine years now and have a lot of experience with a lot of different textbooks. When I started using this book, my students responded very positively. The book outlines everything you need to know in a very efficient and effective way and it makes lesson planning foolproof. I would highly recommend this textbook to everyone.

What a wonderful expression of art and love. I purchased this yesterday and it is as beautiful throughout the book as it is on the cover. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. It would make a wonderful gift for a loved one.

Note: It really needs to be downloaded on something that shows color. I'm not sure what it would be like on the black and white Kindles, but would definitely work on the Fire.
