Hanshaw Saliently Addresses Many Of The Mechanisms Of Social Manipulation & Mind Control That Are Taking Place In Pop Culture
By ZyPhReX
As a preamble, this won't show as a 'verified purchase' because it was a gift given to me, but a picture has been uploaded to show 'proof of purchase'.

In any case, Hanshaw’s work recently became known to me and after listening to her in an interview, my curiosity about her work was piqued.

In this book, Weirdstuff – Hollywood Mind Control by Jamie Hanshaw, a wide net of topics is ensnared, and in quite surprising depth as well. The net the author casts is wide enough to make even the most trenchant believer in the “nothing to see here” paradigm, at least begin to question what might truly be taking place.

What if everything Hanshaw speaks of is true? Are the mind controls agendas she is claiming are happening really taking place? How long has this been happening? Who’s involved?

As other notable authors as the late Jim Keith covered in his book Mass Control: Engineering Human Consciousness and Daniel Estulin delved into in his recent book Tavistock Institute – Social Engineering The Masses, these concerted agendas have not only been going on for decades, but they have become quite embedded in our societal structure in many ways.

Hanshaw adds another groundbreaking and concerning layer into the mind control schemes that are everpresent in society.

Heck, if only a tenth of the information she covers is true, the world we live in is nowhere near the world people most even imagine. That’s actually quite disturbing, because the book makes a great case that various nefarious tools are being used to manipulate people, specifically in the music industry. However, those very people are being used to further more darker agendas, as the author herself illustrates.

This particular book – although its technically a magazine – is rather astounding. It has a lot of claims that might seem outlandish to those who haven’t researched these topics thoroughly, but truly are not.

If you haven’t begin doing research into the Mind Control that’s prevalent in Hollywood, which seeps into our culture, this is a great place to start.

Am definitely highly appreciate of all the colored pictures rather than the usual black and white pictures most other research books feature, as it gives this book greater vibrancy and more ‘life’.

From propaganda, mind control, to occult rituals, and even sifting through some ancient history, Hanshaw pulls no punches in her search for what the truth is. Keep in mind, this is not an easy field to navigate, and not many researchers have delved into it.

With that said though, this is a well researched book, and the author spared no expenses into shedding some light into some extremely bothersome areas of society.

For instance, following the threads of MK Ultra Programming, Hanshaw follows certain pop culture icons such as Beyonce & Britney Spears for example, and examines their carrers with a fine-tooth comb so to speak. A common – and distressing – theme emerges with those, and many other musicians as well.

Part of the additional range of this book extends from analysis on disturbing videos that take place over and over again from various ‘artists’ elucidating into “the revelation of the method,” to alter egos which many musicians feature. Those points are coupled with secret rituals at times [think Superbowl, etc.], all leading to the mass hypnosis of society, which has helped socially engineering a new societal structure – a society that looks vastly different from what it did decades ago as many old-timers will attest too.

Keep in mind, this is merely one component of what is taking place, but a rather poignant one, because it goes mostly unnoticed.

Many people know about fluoride, or aspartame, or that ‘the system is rigged’, or that everything is stacked against you via politics, banking, etc. And yet, most of these people still allow their energy and personal power to be dictated vastly by sophisticated methods of propaganda, social engineering, mind control, entrainment technology and the like.

Given how the average person spends 5 hours watching TV, which accrues to 1,825 hours per year, its no wonder that so many fall like dominoes.

How one acts, how one dresses, what one thinks, how one thinks, how one speaks, what one buys, and much, much more, in large part is being manipulated by unseen hands. Yes, some players are known, as Hanshaw points out, and they SHOULD BE called out, so other people know, but there’s still a lot that is unknown. This is why continued research into such an abstruse field – as Hanshaw and handfull of others are doing – is paramount given how much of society rejects vital information that would be highly beneficial to them if they had an open minded, yet skeptical mind.

Its one thing to watch a movie or a tv show, realizing that many of these pop culture forms of entertainment have various layers of meaning – deeper meaning.

It’s something completely different if what one is watching is to large extent a mind control engineering mechanism that seeks to compromise the individual in myriad ways. The author has shown many of the ways that this is taking place, and people should definitely listen to what is being said.

In this particular book Hanshaw does a trenchant job of addressing some of the questions regarding this esoteric mechanism of social manipulation. And due to that, am definitely looking forward to future works of the author. She set the bar high for her own work and am really looking forward to reading her other two books.

What do you get when you put Britney Spears, Aleister Crowey, and the Rothschilds in a blender?...
By Isaac W
If you want to learn all about the odd place where the worlds of pop culture and conspiracy converge-- get this book! From the music industry to Hollywood's film programming, this book will pique your curiosity to learn more and dive into the rabbit hole. As a self-proclaimed critic of hip-hop and the Illuminati; I found the chapter on Beyonce particularly interesting- as will most people who weren't familiar with the unlikely connections of Jay-Z, TLC, and Aleister Crowley... Overall it's a great eye opener that everyone should read!

A must have! I LOVE THIS BOOK!
By Amazon Customer
This book paves the path for you to understand where and how mind control lies within Hollywood. She breaks it down fully and gets into specifics with Beyonce, Brittney Spears and more. This truly is a history book that I recommend for everyone to read, it's not just interesting information. Her extensive research really shows, the illustrations are wonderful and just really put together beautifully. I have her two first books Weird Stuff 1 & 2. If you don't have those yet, buy it!!! This is information that everyone must know.

About the Author
Lucius Annaeus Seneca, statesman, philosopher, advocate and man of letters, was born at Cordoba in Spain around 4 BC. He rose to prominence in Rome, pursuing a career in the courts and political life, for which he had been trained, while also acquiring celebrity as an author of tragedies and essays. Falling foul of successive emperors (Caligula in AD 39 and Claudius in AD 41), he spent eight years in exile, allegedly for an affair with Caligula’s sister. Recalled in AD 49, he was made praetor and was appointed tutor to the boy who was to become, in AD 54, the emperor Nero. On Nero’s succession, Seneca acted for some eight years as an unofficial chief minister. The early part of this reign was remembered as a period of sound government, for which the main credit seems due to Seneca. His control over Nero declined as enemies turned the emperor against him with representations that his popularity made him a danger, or with accusations of immorality or excessive wealth. Retiring from public life he devoted his last three years to philosophy and writing, particularly the Letters to Lucilius. In AD 65 following the discovery of a plot against the emperor, in which he was thought to be implicated, he and many others were compelled by Nero to commit suicide. His fame as an essayist and dramatist lasted until two or three centuries ago, when he passed into literary oblivion, from which the twentieth century has seen a considerable recovery.

Sir William Smith (20 May 1813 – 7 October 1893) was an English lexicographer.

Translator Aubrey Stewart (1844–1918) M. A., was a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Real wisdom on your Kindle

A new and beautiful e-book edition of one of my favorite books of all time, Seneca's advice on living a fulfilling life. This beautiful edition fits nicely on your Kindle, and makes real wisdom (a thing often claimed but rarely delivered) available to any reader with the swipe of a finger.

Read this, recommend it to your friends of all ages. For teens and up.

Thought-Provoking
By Thessie
It is always a fascinating thing to reread the ancient thoughts of the great philosophers of the past. Although we may not always agree with their concepts and many of Seneca's ideas I do have issues with, we can never automatically reject their philosophies out of hand, without some close examination. This book portends to tell us how to live a happy life and much of Seneca's musings are valid and as applicable today as they were back then. A thought-provoking book and that has to be a good thing.

The European Union will remain united, but incomplete, asymmetrical and with undefined borders. The EU, which is much more than a common market, but less than a super-state or federation, can be conceived as an “empire”. With this approach, Josep Colomer analyzes the current Europe’s dilemmas: the vanishing of the states’ sovereignty, the core role of Germany, the border conflicts with the neighboring Russian Empire, the differences between the euro-zone and the other member-states, and the malaise of the United Kingdom and the temptation of Brexit. ‘This essay will be of clear and lasting value to a range of actors on the international stage. It is erudite and scholarly, yet accessible and elegantly written, using humor and colorful metaphors to simplify a complex subject that is often treated in a dry and abstract way. The argument is innovative, yet confident and convincing.’ Helen Margetts, University of Oxford, UK ‘Josep M. Colomer's ‘The European Empire’ offers an easily readable discussion of the ways in which the European Union has developed and deals with ongoing challenges, by underlying its achievements but also its shortcomings. Clearly written for a broader audience.’ Simon Hug, Université de Genève, Switzerland

Entertaining Sexy Novella
By NReads
I read Jacked on Kindle Unlimited and would have gladly paid for this story.

Sasha Gold has been quickly becoming a go-to author for me. Jacked was a sexy pleasure. I can really connect with the author's writing and really enjoy the way she pens her stories. Jacked was a fun, engaging and all around sexy story with a drop of taboo mixed in.

The characters had nice development and good chemistry. For a steamy, easy read that doesn't take days upon days to read, pick up this novella. You'll be guaranteed a good time, plus Jack is swoon-worthy with his alpha-ness!

The dialogue alone was entertaining! Loved it.
By Kindle Junkies
Loved it! (Possible Spoilers Beware)

The hero makes a plan to claim the heroine and executes it with success. Pretty entertaining and unique step siblings novel. Their parents married as older adults so the H/h never lived or grew up together. This type step siblings romances I like, H/h already adults.

The story is about getting the heroine to take chance and fall for hero. Her dad is pretty strict in what he expects from his children so he rules with iron fist. Hero is older and already established, so he doesn't take crap from anyone. Total opposites with one thing in common, heroine. So part conflict is these two.The other part of conflict is H/h didn't exactly hit it off. But like anything, the attraction was there and hero was first to recognize it.

So you start story on the hero finally making his move. Throughout the book there is some insight to the history of how they got to where they were. Loved the complexity of the characters. There was no black and white in this story for me. The hero and father were both manipulative, but heroine's character allowed for things to resolve themselves without added drama I hate to read in books. She is pretty passive, or submissive as hero describes her, but she was good match for hero. He is too dominant and controlling, but protective and loving. He supports heroine's dreams and is good to go in full guns a blazing if he thinks someone else is taking advantage of her.

I loved it and give it 5 starts. I thought the climactical scene was well written. Great ending. I hope author writes more of these types books. I also recommend Wrecker by author, similar book and the hero's friend. Gotta love Alex Riley for recommending this author:)

I loved Jack and Savannah's story! The chemistry between them and how neither of them knew that the other had feelings for one another. Plus, the plot and the secondary characters were strong too.

About the Author
Steve Nazarian is an adventurer and a storyteller. When he was in college, he and his best friend Stuart developed a simple philosophy, “no matter how any given situation turns out, as long as you come out of it with a good story, it was worth doing.” For nearly half a century Steve had been living the stories that come from epic adventures, the banality of life and everything in between. Steve lives in Penfield, NY with his wife Emily, four children and one dog. The Penny Collector is his first book, but there are many stories still to be told, so stay tuned. ---------------------------------------------

Great stories that entertain and educate
By Mark W. Toor
I stumbled across Steve's writing a few years ago, through his blog. I was immediately impressed with the engaging way he describes events and situations, much like another blogger I follow, James Lileks (lileks.com). I was happy to see "The Penny Collector" because it brings together a variety of Steve's stories in a gift-able format. You'll find the writing to be entertaining and even inspirational, and the stories taken from daily life. Beyond admiring Steve's writing style, I honestly learn something from each story, which meets Samuel Johnson's definition of good writing: it both "pleases and educates."

A must read......
By Amazon Customer
Steve has put together a collection of humorous, touching, interesting and quite relatable experiences in this comfortable read. What's enjoyabe is that these scenarios, that are entertaining as they are, become thought provoking life lessons at the same time. This, almost ironically, is the true function or backbone of his book. It's a subtle and almost sneaky "one-two punch" layed out by Steve. The collection is too entertaining and comfortable to not add to your weekly routine. A must read in my eyes! Great job, Steve Nazarian!

“A careful study….Entitled to much credit for the scholarly analysis of the Kantian argument that he has made….The thirteen chapters of this book deal with the sensibility and understanding, space and time, phenomena and noumena, knowledge and reality, the categories, the analogies of experience, and the postulates of empirical thought, as well as some general considerations of the ‘problem of the ’Critique.’ There is every evidence of a careful and thoughtful study of the ‘Critique’ under consideration. It stimulates new thought concerning Kant. Mr. Prichard has kept in mind a strict epistemological viewpoint. Exclusive attention gives a clean-cut structure of this kind wherein the various parts bear a close and definite relation to each other. -The Journal of Philosophy, Psychology and Scientific Methods, January, 1910

Anna Forster is only thirty-eight years old, but her mind is slowly slipping away from her. Armed only with her keen wit and sharp-eyed determination, she knows that her family is doing what they believe to be best when they take her to Rosalind House, an assisted living facility. But Anna has a secret: she does not plan on staying. She also knows there's just one another resident who is her age, Luke. What she does not expect is the love that blossoms between her and Luke even as she resists her new life. As her disease steals more and more of her memory, Anna fights to hold on to what she knows, including her relationship with Luke.

Eve Bennett, suddenly thrust into the role of single mother to her bright and vivacious seven-year-old daugher, finds herself putting her culinary training to use at Rosalind house. When she meets Anna and Luke, she is moved by the bond the pair has forged. But when a tragic incident leads Anna's and Luke's families to separate them, Eve finds herself questioning what she is willing to risk to help them. Eve has her own secrets, and her own desperate circumstances that raise the stakes even higher.

With huge heart, humor, and a compassionate understanding of human nature, Sally Hepworth delivers a page-turning novel about the power of love to grow and endure even when faced with the most devastating of obstacles. You won’t forget this book.

Review

“When I finished reading this exquisite novel, I turned right around and read it again. The compassion and care with which Ms. Hepworth writes about Anna pulls you in from the first page and as sad as the story is, there are also many laughs and wry humor. A lovely, funny, novel that you won't soon forget and I am grateful that I have read it. It reminds us all that love and being with our loved ones is paramount to life. In the long run, what else matters more?” ―Susan Wasson, Bookworks, Albuquerque, NM

“Sally Hepworth deftly covers a lot of ground with The Things We Keep-bullying, Alzheimer's, elder care, romantic and parental love-with insight, compassion and wit. How I loved the characters...I devoured this book.” ―Marilyn Dahl, Editor, Shelf Awareness for Readers

“In the same class with Still Alice. I loved each of the characters in Rosalind House for their complexity and frustration with their ailments. Jack, Eve, Rosie, and even the teachers and mothers at Clementine's school clearly demonstrate that loving someone does not mean knowing what is best for that person. In fact, sometimes that love and the desire to protect can be the most damaging.” ―Kristin Pidgeon, Penguin Bookshop

“With honesty and true understanding, Sally Hepworth pens this poignant story of one of today's nightmares: early-onset Alzheimer's...Sad in places, redemptive at times, joyous also, The Things We Keep begs to be read for its timeliness and authenticity. The discussion possibilities for book clubs seem endless.” ―Nancy Simpson-Brice, The Book Vault

“Hepworth weaves a fascinating narrative that draws the reader into a personal relationship with these characters. As we come to care about them we learn about the depth of compassion that humans feel for each other and the resilience of the human spirit.” ―Stephanie Crowe, Page and Palette

“The Secrets of Midwives is women's fiction at its finest. Sally Hepworth has written a wonderfully satisfying story about three generations of midwives. It's touching, tender and obviously meticulously researched, giving the reader a fascinating window into the amazing world of midwifery. A delightful read.” ―Liane Moriarty, author of The Husband’s Secret

“From the first page, I could not put The Secrets of Midwives down. Sally Hepworth delves into family secrets and family love in two different eras, adding mystery and plot twists at a breathless, exhilarating pace. I simply love this book!” ―Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle

“The Secrets of Midwives is a compelling exploration of life, loss, and love. Family secrets test the bonds between three women - Neva, her mother Grace, and her grandmother Floss - as they bring babies into the world and navigate their own complex paths. The story deepens and enlarges as it moves through their varied perspectives to its powerful conclusion.” ―Christina Baker Kline, author of The Orphan Train

“With empathy and keen insight, Sally Hepworth delivers a page-turning novel about the complex, lovely, and even heartbreaking relationships between mothers and daughters. The Secrets of Midwives is that rare tale that weaves together the past and the present in a totally absorbing narrative. Sally Hepworth illuminates one of the most important moments in a woman's life-when she becomes a mother-and spins a story that will hold you captivated till the very end.” ―Emily Giffin, author of The One and Only

“Hepworth's debut enchants as three midwives unravel their secrets in the path of a classic New England storm.... Combines vibrant and nuanced characters with a breathtaking plot.” ―Beatriz Williams, author of A Hundred Summers

Tender Story At The Heart Of It
By Barbarino
I hate that my review of this book is the first one posted here and it's not very favorable. I certainly don't want to discourage other readers from trying this author's work but I have to be honest about my opinion of this book. I was really moved by the author's words describing how she came to write this novel.

She wrote: "Dear Reader, Five years ago, I watched a news segment about a woman—a newlywed—who was pregnant with her first child. She had also recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 31 years old. More recently a friend of mine, who is a nurse at a dementia facility, told me about an elderly man and woman who held hands in the communal living area of the center every day. They came into the facility as strangers. Their memories were less than five minutes long. They were both non-verbal. Yet every day, they sat next to each other. Every day he reached for her hand, and every day she allowed him to take it. And for them, every time was the first time. As I researched this book, I heard the story of a woman who didn’t remember that she was married, but who began to cry when she saw her wedding dress. The man who didn’t recognize his wife but gravitated toward her whenever she visited, often asking if she’d like to "take a walk sometime"—the very line he used when he asked her out the first time, sixty years earlier. The story of a grandfather who shielded his granddaughter from a dog, though he couldn’t have recalled who she was, let alone her terror of dogs. Dementia isn’t the only place that memories are found to be flawed—people find out they can’t rely on their memories every day. People blindsided in relationships. People who find out their truth is a lie. People pulled from trauma. People awakened. I wondered: If you can’t use memories to steer your life, what can you use? I didn’t know. It was why I had to write this book. I hope you enjoy it. Sally xox" After reading her words I immediately added this book to my list of books to read before the year was out.

The core story in this novel is about the relationship of Anna and Luke, two young people in their thirties with early on-set Alzheimer's, living in a residential assisted living facility, where they meet and fall in love. Their relationship presents some issues for their families and the staff at the facility. Eve is the cook at the home and she ends up playing a role in Anna and Luke's relationship. Eve is struggling with some hard adjustments in her life and it's very important for her to keep her job for the sake of her daughter, Clementine.

The book is narrated from three different points of view. Anna's story is shared with us starting fifteen months ago when she moved into Rosalind House. Her memories are still fairly well intact though she realizes her disease is progressing quickly. Anna's subsequent chapters move forward in time. Eve, working as a cook in the home, narrates in the present as does her daughter, the third narrator, six year old, Clementine.

There is a slightly pedantic style to the narration, frequently characters make it a point to frame a thought or feeling or ask a pointed question rather than just leaving something as an observation for the reader to contemplate. I dislike when authors do this and it always feels insulting to the reader. There's also a lack of richness to the characters and a lack of chemistry to the romantic relationships.

When I was in my twenties I worked at a residential facility that was home to Alzheimer's patients and in that context I had a hard time finding Eve's behavior realistic. She inserts herself into the lives of the residents and their personal relationships much too quickly. She violates their privacy and meddles in their personal affairs. She insults their families by acting as though she knows Anna and Luke better than they do and criticizes the way they are dealing with the challenges their relationship presents.

Eve's struggle to care for her daughter as a widow and single mother is fairly well portrayed and I found the majority of this thread of the story to be more realistic than Anna and Luke's story. Clementine is struggling with the death of her father and having difficulties at school because of things he did in his business practices. Parents are talking and children are being cruel. I thought the feelings, conflicts and relationships within Eve's family were well fleshed out. Unfortunately the school conflict escalates to a somewhat unlikely conclusion at the same time the climatic event in Anna and Luke's life is described. I felt the two events were too choreographed and would have preferred them to be revealed in a less dramatic way.

On the whole I would have preferred a less dramatic depiction to the entire story and a greater focus on the tender interactions between the characters. I often had difficulty finding the dialogue believable and frequently thought the script the characters were reading sounded like it came from a made for TV movie. It felt melodramatic rather than realistic and that was a disappointment to me.

... chapter I had decided this story would be unbearably sad. As I read on
By PSusan
The Things We Keep at the first chapter I had decided this story would be unbearably sad. As I read on, I realized my error. There are plenty of realistic sorrows and losses in this story of a young woman with Alzheimer’s. Somehow though Sally Hepworth has kept a delicate balance between the despair and the hope of the residents and employees of Rosalind House.

I found myself shredding a few tears and some unexpected smiles as I read some of the experiences of the residents. Of course, it starts one thinking of those dear to you or of your own future. Perhaps it is the honesty within the story that strikes such a cord with the reader. Really it is two stories. Anna and Eve lives are very different but the parallel stories were striking when put side by side as they were in The Things We Keep. I don’t think I will ever forget these two characters.

The publisher through Net Galley provided a copy.

Cute
By H.F.
I'm giving this book 3 and 1/2 stars, while it was enjoyable, I found it didn't really hold my attention as much as I expected. I've had family with Alzheimer's and found the portrayal of Anna, the character who's has early onset Alzheimer's, to be accurate. They can have normal conversations and then all of a sudden not know who you are. Getting angry and confused easily. Overall though, it was definitely a cute, girly book. It reminded me of girl interrupted in some ways, but going the geriatric route. Predictable for the most part. I did find the jumping forward and ahead by months and even a year to be confusing. I also wanted some more development of certain characters. I liked the idea of it, but I didn't love it once I finished.

The Stone Necklace: A Novel (Story River Books), by Carla Damron

Clawing chest pains and a fiery car crash take one life and change the destiny of four others. The Stone Necklace braids together the stories of a grieving widow, a struggling nurse, a young mother, and a troubled homeless man, reminding us of the empowering and surprising ways our lives touch one another and how, together, we can recover from even the greatest of losses.

Carla Damron weaves the stories of four people in Columbia, South Carolina, whose seemingly disparate existences intersect through tragedies realized and tragedies averted. Lena Hastings survived breast cancer and marital infidelity but now faces an uncertain future and crises with her teenaged daughter Becca without the support of the one person she has always counted on. Intensive care nurse Sandy Albright, newly released from drug rehab, confronts temptations from her past and false accusations threatening her career, leaving her to wonder if a drug-free life is really living. Tonya Ladson, a mother whose child is injured in the wreck, must decide if her domineering husband is right and a lawsuit will solve their financial problems. Joe Booker, a homeless man who sleeps in a graveyard, loses his gentle benefactor and must either succumb to the real and imagined evils of his world or find the heretofore-untapped courage to care for himself and for others as a stranger once cared for him. Weighted down by their respective pasts, the characters must make life-altering choices that reverberate into the fates of the others, ultimately bringing them together in unexpected but healing acts of compassion, forgiveness, and redemption.

The Stone Necklace includes a foreword from novelist Patti Callahan Henry.

Review
"Carla Damron is a wise and sensitive storyteller, attuned to the social fabric that makes up community. In The Stone Necklace, she deftly sees into the hearts of a clutch of different characters, all linked by the same sudden tragedy, all destined to transform each other's' lives. This is a symphonic novel of human noise and nature, and I fully expect it to garner Damron the audience she deserves."--Ashley Warlick, author of The Arrangement

"A deftly written, moving novel about picking up the pieces after great loss."--Jenny Offill

"Carla Damron delves deeply and wholly into the souls of her story's characters . . . each representative in her or his way of our larger, shared experiences, as she shows us with wisdom and grace that there are no absolutes in matters of the heart."--Patti Callahan Henry, from the foreword

"In The Stone Necklace, Carla Damron takes full ownership of Columbia, South Carolina, in a way no writer ever has, capturing the flawed soul of the historic capital city as the weight of its past still hangs albatross-like on the throat of the present. Damron's masterful portrayal of misery giving way to empathy leads us toward a glimmering hope of redemption for families and a community on the cusp of bold rebirth. This a novelist to be read again and again."--Pat Conroy

"With every well-chosen word and every beautifully achieved character, Carla Damron proves herself to be an accomplished and hopeful observer of our fragile human condition, one with a deep love of her home city and a reverence for the prospects of its citizens to become better versions of themselves. The Stone Necklace is a celebration of the transformative power of shared experiences and of the connections that bind us as family and friends, as communities and cities, and ultimately as one humanity."--Mary Alice Monroe

"The Stone Necklace is a novel crafted out of the raw materials of Columbia itself, much like the necklace that comes to serve as a vibrant symbol for the braiding together of diverse, disparate lives in the narrative. Eudora Welty said that one place understood helps us understand all places better. That's what Carla Damron has achieved in her portrait of Columbia: a nuanced understanding of one place that helps us to understand all others--and to understand ourselves."--Ron Rash

A Transformative Book
By HS
“Remember that first project you did in my class? You let so much out that day. You need to paint. It’s how you express yourself best.”

It always fascinates me when a line from a novel causes transformation in my own life. Carla Damron’s The Stone Necklace provides many such moments, bringing a deeper understanding of homelessness, eating disorders, the fight involved in taking on cancer or substance abuse, and dysfunctional families. But for me, struggling to find myself as a creative person, Carla’s words gave me the courage to engage in a twelve step program to embrace visibility as an artist and a writer and a film-maker and a however else I chose to express myself-er.

Back when I was a member of the Inkplots writing group, it was my privilege to witness Carla’s dedication in developing her craft while she wrote The Stone Necklace. When I reviewed her final draft in 2014, I knew she had found the power to connect readers with uncomfortable realities. She had used her training and experience as a social worker to bring compassion to many times unlovable characters. The Stone Necklace is a book of redemption for all of us who feel broken by life and want to reclaim wholeness.

The Stone Necklace
By Susan R
"She wore her sins like a stone necklace." This one of the first descriptions of Lena Hastings as the novel starts. Lena has just survived breast cancer and reconciled with her husband as the story opens. She has had the bad luck in her life and she feels that now is the time for life to be good. However, that day, her husband is in a horrific car crash that takes his life. This is the story of how the family and other interconnected characters deal with life without Mitch to hold it together for them. There are a lot of characters but they are all touched by Mitch's death -- there is his widow, Lena who is an artist unable to paint since her cancer scare, her sons Sims and Elliot, her daughter Becca who is trying to control her life by self-harming and then three other main characters who play a large role in the novel but are not part of the family - Sandy, the nurse in ICU who is on probation for using drugs and Joe, the homeless man who lives in the cemetery and has been helped out by Mitch over the years and Tonya who was injured in the car crash with Mitch along with her small son. It sounds like a lot of characters but there is no confusion and they are all part of the central theme of the novel - that no matter what happens in our past, there is hope for the future by showing compassion to others - both within our families and to the other people whose lives are intertwined with our own.

I enjoyed this book and getting to know these characters. I loved the way that the author managed to interweave their lives and make it all so believable. The author has a background in social work and it's very apparent that she has a great understanding of life for homeless people based on her story line about Joe, the homeless man whose story line is so important to the novel.

One more comment -- I usually don't pay a lot of attention to who publishes a book but I have read three books this year published by Story River Books, a publisher of fiction based at the University of South Carolina, and all of them have been excellent. I plan to look for the books that they publish in the future because they publish books that I enjoy and that need to be read!

I definitely enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to all of my reader friends.

The Stone Necklace by Carla Damron
The necklace brings together many from different tragedies.
Starts out with Leena: cancer, surgery, chemo. Mitch, the husband tries to keep it all together.
Joe the homeless man who does chores for them. He had left a stone and it appears in Mitchs briefcase every morning.
Follows Tonya in a car that gets in an accident-her son Bryon is ok, she blames herself for texting..... Mitch had run a red light and crashed into her car due to his medical emergency.
Story also follows Becca, Sims and older brother who all gather at the hospital for their father. Also Sandy who's a recovering addict hat is a nurse in the hospital.
Confusing at times as everybody has so much going on.
Like this book because it is about a lot of different people, different ages, different careers and they have one thing in common...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Unretirement: How Baby Boomers are Changing the Way We Think About Work, Community, and the Good Life, by Chris Farrell

The budget battles of recent years have amplified the warnings of demographic doomsayers who predicted that a wave of baby boomers would bleed America dry, bankrupting Social Security and Medicare as they faded into an impoverished old age. On the contrary, argues award-winning journalist Chris Farrell, we are instead on the verge of a broad, positive transformation of our economy and society.

The old idea of "retirement"--a word that means withdrawal, describing a time when people gave up productive employment and shrank their activities--was a short-lived historical anomaly. Humans have always found meaning and motivation in work and community, Farrell notes, and the boomer generation, poised to live longer in better health than any before, is already discovering unretirement--extending their working lives with new careers, entrepreneurial ventures, and volunteer service. Their experience, wisdom--and importantly, their continued earnings--will enrich the American workplace, treasury, and our whole society in the decades to come.

Unretirement not only explains this seismic change, now in its early stages, it provides key insights and practical advice for boomers about to navigate this exciting, but unsettled, new frontier, drawing on Chris Farrell's decades of covering personal finance and economics for Bloomsberg Businessweek and Marketplace Money. This will be an indispensable guide to the landscape of unretirement from one of America's most trusted experts.

A beacon in the depressing retirement narrative
By Tom Sales
The reference to this book that motivated me to read it was in one of the many Yahoo articles about the perils of being unprepared for retirement that we see every day and week online. Who's behind all these articles? Financial services companies wanting to take advantage of scaring readers to save and invest? Or writers and reporters who know articles about retirement are what people want to read? Whatever the reasons individuals and corporations have for publishing all of this advice and fear-mongering about successfully saving and transitioning into retirement, I know that I can't get enough of it. They've got my interest.

So in that context, Chris Farrell's book about how Baby Boomers are not about to take things on others' terms was an easy sale for me. The best adjective to describe the overall theme is "hopeful." Farrell claims to have attended many conferences, panel discussions and personal fact-finding visits to groups trying to get in front of the retirement perils others are writing so much about. For all the stories we read about where those in their 40's, 50's and 60's unlucky enough to have lost their jobs and struggled to regain their footing, Farrell has found others who have countered obstacles and roadblocks to finally identify new opportunities ... many in jobs that actually help others to navigate into retirement.

The benefit of all this is that it provides a counterpoint to all the negative stories about all that can go wrong when others give up on people because they've gotten old. By documenting the stories of many who--may be making less than before--but are doing things now that give them purpose and meaning, Farrell has offered a reason for many to keep trying and looking for jobs and roles where their unique talents and experiences will make them--and others--happier in more successful second or third acts.

So is this book too hopeful ... too anecdotal? I don't think so. Will we look back 20-30 years from now on this crazy quilt of new articles, books, conferences, emerging retirement business models and success stories and say that once more baby boomers did things their own way and refused to just accept what circumstances served up to them? It still feels a little optimistic because the stories Farrell is sharing are not common knowledge. The groups and associations he describes are still figuring things out.

Another thing that "Unretirement" does well is describing how new and recent this whole concept of good vs. bad retirements really is. He vividly describes how horrid retirement really was in the 20's and 30's, and then how shallow retirement became as our parents were able to afford Arizona retirement communities. Again, Farrell says that Baby Boomers won't stand for such models and experiences. Yes, we are still trying to figure out how to replace pensions with our own 401(k) and IRA savings and clearly we didn't do a very good job of it, but we will still find better, more substantial ways of spending our time to have left our mark in the next 20-30 years and be able to say we did it our way.

One of the other refreshing aspects of this book is that there is NO reference to the selfish and self-serving antics of our government and political parties. Other books express constant frustration that government is not leading the way with policy that could have addressed the downturn and gotten people to work and back to work. Instead, Farrell frames a coming unretirement movement of what we can do for ourselves. Perhaps as we fend for ourselves to live a worthwhile final act we can bring positive activity back into our society and economy, and end the outrage of political interests trying to make themselves look better and gain power by screwing the other side. Focus on what needs to be done rather than countering the other party.

As Farrell says himself, people should read about what others are doing as they transition into retirement and then perhaps back again into unretirement. There are a lot stories and new developments going on all around us, so become aware and don't just stand for suddenly becoming nonproductive. This is a good book to read and consider within that overall context.

Unlock the Magic Box of 'Unretirement'
By Barbara Pagano
In light of all the books on the market about how longevity will affect individuals, communities, the workplace and lifestyles, Farrell finally gives us a worthwhile, outstanding read.

The “unretirement” movement has no common shared vision or narrative…yet. (Spellchecker doesn't even recognize the word.)

But Farrell’s vision of our “get me a rewrite” moment when it comes to retirement will kick start conversations on ‘my unretirement.’ It could not be a more exciting time.

Practical, clearly written, research supplemented with powerful stories – I highly recommend this book.

For professionals who help individuals/groups reinvent and change course, this is a ‘must read’ – now, before you see your next client. For many stumped individuals (pre-retirees and retirees) confused about reimagining the last third of life, the book provides a solid path to regain footing. For future generations, the value is unprecedented in helping to commit to an extended career arc long past 65... happily.

Successful movements need ‘thought leaders’ to provide context insightful wisdom.
Bravo Mr. Farrell for your voice and clarity.

The positive and negative forces of "un-retirement"
By Alan F. Sewell
Most Americans born between 1920 and 1950 lived rags-to-riches lives. They grew up poor during the Great Depression of the 1930s, then were called up to fight World War II. Those who survived the war came home to make their careers during the Great Prosperity of 1945-1999. They worked during a time when salaries, home prices, and stock markets were rising, and career-ending layoffs were rare.

Most of that generation retired with paid-off residences and vacation homes; company-paid pensions and health insurance; and often rental properties and million-dollar 401K plans. Their "golden years" were filled with affluence and leisure. Most didn't even have to PLAN for retirement. Having a steady, layoff-proof job during a period of affluence automatically took care of that for most.

Then things changed. Employment became less stable. Defined contribution pensions were replaced by 401K plans. Then the Great Recession diminished stock portfolios and home equity. Author Chris Farrell believes things are brighter than they look for those late-career people whose financial lives were set back by layoffs and recessions. He sees them entering upon a social "revolution" that will enable them to get back in the work force and prosper into late old age.

=====
Welcome to unretirement, a revolution in the making "Older workers are going to change the workforce as profoundly as women did," says Deborah E. Banda, senior adviser, AARP Education and Outreach. "The changes they are making in the work place will benefit all generations, not just older workers. "
=====

I was dubious about this noble-sounding idea. My father, who retired at age 62, was an executive with post-retirement offers galore. He turned them all down until he passed away at age 79, even though he retired in modest circumstances. The incredible numbers of commercials advertising financial planning for people who still dream of affluent retirement makes me wonder whether people cherish a career that requires working beyond the traditional retirement age.

Farrell believes that people do want to continue working longer. He points to advances in healthcare enable people to remain physically younger than their chronological age. He postulates that most companies will reverse their current policies of refusing to hire people over the age of 50 and even start welcoming them, as it becomes more in vogue to recognize their experience, loyalty, and mature judgment than their gray hair.

Are Farrell's ideas are grounded in reality or merely wishful thinking?

=====
In other words, we're living through a period of experimentation. Far too much of the conversation about aging ignores how much grassroots innovation is directed at the challenge. In cities, suburbs, and towns around the country, stories are accumulating about the experiences of older workers, the good, the bad, and the gray area in-between. We're witnessing the birth of a new business, the unretirement industry.

"When there are no set rules-- you make them up. The future of old age and retirement will be improvised." The history of innovation suggests that many large-scale transformations often start small.
=====

Farrell sums it up objectively:

=====
Taken altogether, a mix of positive and negative forces are pushing and pulling older workers away from traditional notions of retirement.

"The big question therefore is not simply whether there will be enough jobs for older workers but whether the work will be rewarding enough, both economically and socially, to keep them in the labor force." That's the right concern. Management hasn't exactly gone out of its way to nurture a supportive work climate in recent years.
=====

No doubt that some elders WILL succeed in mastering life on their own terms as entrepreneurs or highly valued, well-paid employees. The more who EXPECT to succeed on those terms, the more there will be who do succeed. At a minimum, If Farrell can convince the 50+ readers that they still have a fighting chance to obtain some measure of late life financial security and dignity, then this book has well served its purpose

The great Christian philosopher C.S. Lewis said, "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." Read this book and you might be inclined to agree with him.
