Masterpiece

This book is simply groundbreaking. As a person who likes scholarly material and as a person who likes accessible material, this book is simply like no other. Mr. Wallis's erudition, accuracy, and detail to the latest and most compelling research is matched by his completely approachable and accessibility to very precise and ancient technology that we call the "Tantra". Tantra Illuminated, breaks down misconceptions and stereotypes, and offers the reader the most compelling approaches to understanding this very broad and very mis-understood tradition. Anyone, whether a casual Yoga teacher, to a serious undergrad or grad student in religious studies, or a practitioner in any form of Tantra, NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK. For the serious academic, Chris Wallis uses primary Sanskrit sources, never before seen translations, and precise teachings from his own prodigious education with some of the world's finest scholars in this area (namely Alexis Sanderson, Paul Muller Ortega, and Douglas Brooks). However, he also appeals to the everyday casual student with his courage to use down to Earth language at times, and personal gleamings from his own practice (like practicing directly with Guru Mayi or studying at Oxford University). This book, and the others I'm sure he will put out soon, will be the standard upon which Tantric Studies will rely on.

The Must-Have Yoga Philosophy Text

If you're serious about understanding yoga philosophy, Tantra Illuminated is the new essential text. I've read many works about Tantra by modern scholars; most suffer from either excess academic-ese or simply bore the reader to sleep. Wallis' work is the Tantrik manual I've always dreamed of: easy to read but detailed, replete not just with philosophy but with why this ancient tradition matters to us as yoga practitioners in the modern world. His real-life examples and conversational tone make accessible the beautifully profound teachings he shares with the reader. I savored this book page by page, like a bar of delicious chocolate. And best of all, I expect to enjoy it over and over again.

Wow, what a book!

The great American zen master Philip Kapleau once said that the very best books are those that make you want to practice. This is definitely such a book. It is a profoundly well-written book, an impressive book, that is fun and exciting to read. Not only that, this book clearly transmits shaktipat to anyone with a heart that resonates with what it is saying.

I have been a yogi for about 50 years now and have had the incredible good fortune to spend time with the Siddha Guru Baba Muktananda and train with him at his New York ashram, so I am somewhat familiar with what this author calls Nondual Shaiva Tantra (NST). But I am not a scholar, pundit or intellectual. None-the-less, reading this book is a profound spiritual experience along with an in-depth education in the most life positive spiritual system known to humankind. Although it can take you to incredible intellectual and philosophical heights, the real treasure is that NST provides you with the means to realize its truth for yourself. It is a yoga. It is not something you have to believe or accept. It is something you can actually realize for yourself as it is the truth of your being.

This book has several different levels, as the title claims, in that it provides the philosophy, history and practice of a timeless tradition. The author is well aware that the reader may not be interested in every aspect, so he always lets you know where the book is going in case you want to skim through a section that may not be too relevant to your interests. The author is in a conversation with the reader and that may be another reason such a powerful transmission is possible. There is the palpable presence of Consciousness in this book.

I haven't enjoyed a book this much in a long, long time.

I want to thank Bonnie for getting me this wonderful book for Christmas, Christopher Tompkins for turning me onto it through his tele-class, Abhinava Gupta's 15 Verses on Awakening, and Christopher Wallis for writing such a beautiful book.

This Book revealed areas I need to build up in my own Faith.

In the morning I get up and go to the mirror just so to see what I might need fix'n on the outside. Comb hair, wash face, straighten collar, etc.... Mike Jr's book was like a mirror to my soul and for my Faith and has revealed to me I need some serious fix'n in the Faith department. I don't know if I could ever measure up to Mike Sr's level of Faith. I bought this book on the 7th. Read as much as I could every evening and I just couldn't put it down. Finished it last night on the 10th. An AMAZING story. I never really got to know Mike. We had just a couple of casual conversations. I was in his Sunday School Class he taught in the early 2000s. We were a couple of the members and enjoyed Mike as a teacher. He is truly missed however, his legacy will live on for a long long time. A fantastically written book.

If you want to get some insight into a man's heart that was more Kingdom focused that anyone, get this book.

I give this book a 5 star review b/c of who Mike was and how he impacted the lives of so many including my own. If you want to get some insight into a man's heart that was more Kingdom focused than anyone I have ever met, get this book. Mike's legacy and witness for Jesus was and is astounding. Just one lesson (of many) found in this book can change the trajectory of your walk with Christ if you implement it. Get this book, read it and apply it to your life.

Most encouraging and inspiring book I've ever read!!!

There are 2 that I most look forward to meeting in Heaven, 1st on that list of course is our Lord Jesus! Amen! 2nd is Mike Fechner. To think that for about the last 8 or 9 years of Mike Fechner's life I lived less than 3 hours from where he was serving. This man's life should be an inspiration to all Christ-followers in the US.I am overjoyed at finding this inspiring book! Mike is probably the only Christian I've ever heard of that understood the true meaning of Acts 20:35b. "...And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive."

Awesome! A must Read!

I learned about the existence of this book just as I was desparing that there were no good intermediate or advanced pagan books out there. "Out of the Shadows" was everything I was looking for and more. As someone who has long been attracted to dieties with darker, less nurturing aspects like Sekhmet, Kali, and Coyote, I agree that this book was much needed in presenting paganism without the "good vs. bad" dualism. The left hand path is often misunderstood, and I think this book is a wonderful introduction to it. It is a very psychological, thought provoking view. One will find no pre-made spells or rituals here; Coughlin explores the philosophy and mechanics of magic to help you understand why they work. -Quite a liberating thing!
It is also a joy to read; I really enjoyed the conversational style of writing that Coughlin used. He defines and clarifies several aspects of dark spirituality/goth subculture that I would not normally have read about, such as Vampirism and Satanism. He also goes into depth about subjects that would never see the light of day in other books: blood, pain, insanity, sex magic, curses, and drugs. Always there, though, is a reminder of the need for balance and responsibility. The final chapter on haunting was superb; it made sense of the hauntings that I have experienced and caused me to see them in a new way. This book tops my list of favorite pagan books; I reccomend it to everyone who can handle the subject matter and wants a full course meal in magic.

Dark Paganism from Out of the Shadows

In Out of The Shadows, author John J. Coughlin trys to

rebuild the balance 'Light Paganism' has created. He

gives an easy and understandable description of what

the Darkness and 'Dark Paganism' actually are. Though

the focus of this book is 'Dark Paganism', the author in

no way tries to deny or degrade Light Paganism. In

fact, Coughlin actually describes it's benefits and

necessities in modern paganism.

In his explanation of the Darkness, Coughlin gives

information on "dark siders" including the Gothic and

Vampiric Sub-Culture. He gives a clear and understandable explanation of "The Shadow" in psychological terms, as well as symbols, images, and archetypes associated with darkness. I found the section on dark deities to be especially interesting,

where Coughlin offers information on specific deities

from various pantheons including Celtic,Egyptian,

Greek, and Hindu.

Part Two is an explanation of the nature and structure of magick. This section explains how and why magick works as well as it's limitations and psychological factors. Coughlin takes you through each step of the

Excellent book that will get you thinking

What I like about this book is the author's upfront honesty. this is a book about magickal theory and exploring your dark side. The author never sets out to do a book that's focused on practice. He wants you to critically think and explore the concepts that he touches on, but in a manner that I believe gives a lot of respect to the reader.

there is no such thing as bad news for celebrities

Title: How Our Celebrity Culture Has Spread to Presidential Politics

Donald Trump is a celebrity and during his presidential run he has followed the rules that celebrities use to get massive news coverage instead of the rules that politicians use. As the book points out, there is no such thing as bad news for celebrities, although it can destroy politicians. Since Trump is running as a celebrity, the ordinary political rules don't apply to him. This is why he can withstand almost relentless hostile press attacks and still thrive. — a major insight of this book that goes a long way to understanding how Trump has gotten all the support that he has. His biggest fans are the same people who react strongly to the celebrities in popular culture. If this group is a majority and shows up at the polls (the book points out that they may not and uses lots of facts and figures to explain why), then America will be having its first tabloid president.

An Addictive Read

As the moderator and editor of PoliSci Pulse, I found this book filled with valuable material and possible ideas for future articles. The author is obviously a seasoned political observer with institutional memory and is highly knowledgeable about the mechanics of campaigns. The Trump candidacy may not be something completely new, but instead an extreme example of a fringe campaign that may have garnered so much support that it can actually win. These campaigns tend to be candidate/media centric with poorly implanted ground games (a term the author uses often). Instead of an organization, these candidates have disorganization. Many of the things Donald Trump has done in the presidential race so far could certainly be described as, “don’t try this at home”, and yet, he’s had a great deal of success. While this has completely confused the Beltway pundits, this book sorts it all out and you’ll clearly understand Trump’s role in the U.S. political process after reading it.

A Must Read for Every Political Junkie

Like many people, I am curious about how Donald Trump suddenly rose to prominence on the political scene. This book goes a long way in explaining why Trump has captured the media, captivated voters (at least a big chunk of them) and threatened a powerful political establishment. It’s not an anti or pro-Trump book, but an analysis of why a Trump candidacy is so potent in the 2016 presidential race. If there is a major “anti” in this book, it is directed at the mainstream media and how it handles political coverage.

The prose is easy to read, but there are also a lot of numbers in this book — poll numbers from 2015 and previous presidential contests as well as voting statistics from past elections. The author explains in detail why Trump can win (or lose) the Republican nomination and how the general election can be won by the Republican nominee, whether it is Trump or not.

If you want to really understand the 2016 presidential race, you should read this book.

The Mumonkan is a classic Zen text consisting of 48 koans collected by Wu-men, a Chinese master who lived in the 13th century. This fresh translation and commentary by Aitken, a prominent American Zen master, is striking in its evidence of careful scholarship and attention to the problems of translation. In contrast to Zenkei Shibayama's Zen Comments on the Mumonkan ( LJ 4/15/74), Aitken's commentaries more carefully maintain a feeling of Zen "non" sense in addressing the content of the cases, yet his historical explications nicely place the text in perspective for the uninitiated reader. This translation belongs alongside other editions in collections with a particular interest in Zen. For those with a more marginal interest, this would only be appropriate as an enhancement to more basic works on the subject.

These forty-eight koans were gathered together and supplied with commentary by the thirteenth-century Chinese master Wu-men. Leading off with Chao-Chu's famous Dog koan (Mu), these forty-eight "fingers pointing at the moon" are basic building blocks of Zen training.
American Zen master Robert Aitken has freshly translated Wu-men's text and supplied his own commentary, the first by a western master. Drawing on his own experiences as a student and teacher of Zen, as well as his extensive knowledge of the Zen literature, Aitken-roshi's commentary brings the reader deeper into each koan; rather than "explaining" or "solving", his words open each koan as a living question applicable and relevant to contemporary life.
Both Chinese and Japanese names are used throughout, and Aitken uses anecdotes from many original sources to breathe life into the ancient worthies whose koans have perplexed centuries of Zen students. You will find yourself perusing the bibliography and footnotes regularly, and if you're like me, anxious to get your hands on The Blue Cliff Record (another koan collection) and some of the other works Aitken refers to.

This sincere Zen master offers us an inside view of the enlightened mind through his instructive, evocative, lucid presentations of the multi-faceted science of mind known as Zen.

Besides commentaries on all 48 cases, Aitken Roshi shares his wisdom on Mumon's "Preface", "Postscript", and "Cautions." His meticulous attention to authentic scholarship, one of the hallmarks of all of Aitken's work, provides readers with plenty of extra leads by the inclusion of detailed notes for each case. Also included are a sectional bibliography, lineage charts, Chinese-Japanese, and Japanese-Chinese equivalent tables, a helpful glossary, and more.

A generous contribution to any Zen practice

Don't get me wrong: I am still baffled by much of this material. But Aitken-Roshi has generously provided back-story, critical cultural context, and his own insight into these wonderful koans.

I have heard some say that the old koans are not relevant to modern American life. Whether or not you agree, I hope you will find the historical information and the deep mythology covered in this book to be as fascinating and as eye-opening as I did. For me, it was a joyous exploration of our ancient Zen tradition, and--even if we choose to update our practices--no harm can come from exploring the oldies. Aitken-Roshi certainly did some heavy research.

As with Batchelor's _Buddhism Without Belief_, I cherished the whole book, but one simple phrase stays with me:

"...when everything starts to get dark, and you know it will not get light again."

When I read that, I felt it down to the marrow in my bones! (Of course, this section addressed my own baggage. Your mileage may vary.)
