Great book, extremely informative

Was extremely informative and very well written. A lot of the material is stuff that I had heard of or read separately and it is great to have such an organized and chronological source to site when referring to CIA entanglements in South America. Overall I loved the book and it was very easy to read and understand! Great job!

Ive been interested in the CIA's hand around the world for quite a while, having seen the book and just skimming over the contents, i was immediately interested... The book covers not only the CIA in Jamaica, but also connects the dots to other goings on during the time period... Extremely informative and very well written, the author obviously has a passion for the subject and bringing truth to the reader. I enjoyed the read immensely and would highly recommend it to anyone with even a slight interest in geo-politics/history/CIA and the history of the US gov.'s actions around the world. Great job!

Very informative

Comprehensive overview of a lot of the Cold War activity to which Jamaica and several other countries suffered collateral damage. I was vaguely aware of the mix of violence and politics in Jamaica over the years, but Casey's detail was illuminating. Enjoyed it.

Well written, factual, eye-opening account of our uncontrolled border.

I just finished reading "Alligators In The Moat" by Cochise County, Arizona rancher Ed Ashurst. I am a retired twenty-eight year Arizona law enforcement veteran who has spent most of my career working border crimes along the Mexican border in Arizona, including Cochise County. As such, I began reading this book with a solid background and understanding of the out-of-control situation on our border with Mexico.

What Mr. Ashurst describes in his book is absolutely correct, completely accurate, thoroughly documented, and not exaggerated in any way. The shocking stories you will read are corroborated by many law enforcement officers and ranchers who live each day seeing the crime, corruption (on both sides of the border), property destruction, burglaries, murder, smuggling, illegal immigration and many instances of drug cartel intimidation that our unprotected border brings to Americans who live along our border with Mexico.

Mr. Ashurst not only tells the stories of living in the midst of unrestricted border crime, he also provides many examples of uncaring politicians who treat border area residents as whiners and complainers and simply give double-talk and lip service to the border residents suffering under the weight of our uncontrolled border.

Mr. Ashurst's book makes those politicians uncomfortable -- and well it should. He casts a light on their dark deeds of nonfeasance, misfeasance and even malfeasance. He accurately points out how government leaders have tied the hands of the Border Patrol, preventing them from carrying out their sworn duty to protect the border.

As a law enforcement veteran of the Mexican border, I will say this is one of the best books on the border I've read in quite awhile. It is factual, well written and I highly recommend it.

My goodness what a read. Like a cannon shot or a thunderbolt it will get your attention. The further north of America's southern border, more you might want to read this. Eye witness, records opening, real life accounts of what is lived out by ranchers and small town America, and who is listening??? Ashurst for Senator??? That's an echo in Arizona...

A rather slanted framed look at the Brontës and the 19th century

Say the name "Brontë" out loud in a crowded room and you are bound to get a mixed palette of faces and comments. Some may be polite and not comment while others give a cryptic reaction that you can read as boredom and maybe a hint of aversion and then there's the select group whose eyes gleam with excitement and hope the announcer wants to discuss everything and anything pertaining to the Brontës' works, lives and 19th-century England. I proudly fall into that final class and if anyone were to glance at my home bookshelf they will know I adore the works of the Brontë sisters; particularly Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey. I could never tire of the elaborate beautiful words and characters in those pages and I eagerly search for anything resembling these novels or some new tidbit of trivia about the family to treasure. So when I saw The Brontë Cabinet: Three Lives in Nine Objects was available as an audio book on Audible and listened to a snippet of the narration; I knew I found my next companion for the late work nights to come.

Although the narrator's voice inviting and perfectly matched for this book; I'm not so sure about the whole experience and subject matter unfortunately. It may come down to expectations and personal preference but I'm very sorry to say, this work was too skewed and harbored uncomfortable obsession on certain topics for this eager listener. To be frank, there was an odd fixation on finding and loosely looping objects to eroticism and controversial theories and although a creative and inquisitive imagination was clearly evident that fashioned some captivating narrative styled chapters, too much speculation was presented at certain points that had me shaking my head in disappointment by the end. Again it may come down to personal preference but it almost seemed the author was determined to push her own views and theories forward which is fine if stated forthright but I personally wasn't ready for that and it seemed this book was trying to be something else and had an unpleasant slant to it. There was also the objects that were examined in this book themselves, I couldn't help to be somewhat disappointed in the selection. Some of the personal keepsakes: a workbox, writing desk, dog collar, hair bracelet and collection of ferns were fascinating to listen about, and the way the inside walls of the Brontë family would open to the outside 19th century in this book kept me eagerly leaned forward to hear more. Unfortunately, other objects didn't seem to be as interesting and those parts loosely tied to the Brontës or their novels.

Negatives aside, there was a trove of trivia to gather in The Brontë Cabinet: Three Lives in Nine Objects and I loved the discussions, quotes and side notes on the novels throughout this non-fiction title. I also enjoyed the narrative fashioned sections and coupled with the voice of the audio version, I could imagine walking under the low gray sky and into the small home of the Brontës, seeing their daily lives play out in front of me. It was very easy to fall away from the real world at those parts and someday I plan to see the Brontë Parsonage Museum and explore the infamous moorlands and pick some heather. I also plan to seek out more biographies and of course plan to reread my favorites when the weather outside my windows mirrors the settings in those beloved stories. The Brontë Cabinet: Three Lives in Nine Objects may have presented as a slightly slanted framed look at the Brontës and 19th century for me but I would still recommend this audio version for those who fall into that third class of excited literary admirers- you know who you are and I'll see you on the moors.

Please Open The Brontë Cabinet!

Charlotte Brontë once wrote “the writer who possesses the creative gift owns something of which he is not always master—something that at times strangely wills and works for itself.” After reading Deborah Lutz’s The Brontë Cabinet I can attest that not only does she possess the “creative gift” for writing, but that she is also a master of it. Always wary of yet another book on a life (or in this case, lives) already too well-documented, too well-analyzed, I stepped up to The Brontë Cabinet with trepidation, pondering that age old literary biography question, will there be anything new to be found here? Will I learn anything I don’t already know? What more about Charlotte, Emily, and Anne is there to discover? Well, in Ms. Lutz’s hands quite a lot more. Subtitled Three Lives in Nine Objects (actually three and a half as brother Branwell’s sadly fractional existence is considered too), Ms. Lutz takes up the intriguing notion of examining the lives and works of the sisters in the bits and pieces and odds and ends that they’ve left behind and takes flight with it. Evidently born with the gift of psychometry (the divination of the intimate details of a life through touch), Ms. Lutz conjures the Brontës into being using such diverse household articles as dog collars, woven braids of hair, and albums of dried ferns. Ms. Lutz’s research is amazing and comprehensive, her opinions and views on the sisters and their books truthful and enlightening (I’ve learned to see Wuthering Heights in a whole new light). Each chapter stands out on its own, from the gentle, loving humor of "Keeper, Grasper, and Other Family Animals" to the pathos of "Migrating Relics" and the chapter "The Alchemy of Desks" was marvelously eye-opening, concerning something most would dismiss as merely nothing more than another piece of domestic furniture. And I never knew that writing paper could be so fascinating! Brava, Ms. Lutz! The Bronte Cabinet was a delight from start to finish.

On Holy Ground: A Course in Bronte-Saurian Archeology

THE BRONTE CABINET is a virtual archaeological dig on the sacred ground of the four Brontes (Branwell, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne). Professor Deborah Lutz is one of the world's greatest authorities on the Victorian Age and her knowledge of the Brontes is not inferior to that of Juliet Barker or any other Brontean. This book is written humbly and with nobility of spirit and it is comparable to books by Dominic Crossan that take us on an archaeological tour of the Palestine area in order to excavate Jesus and Paul. Verily, wherever the four Brontes lived and died is sacred ground. The swiftness of their passage on this earth is in itself suggestive of saint's lives-- St Catherine of Siena, St Catherine of Liege, Shankara, Vivekananda, Simone Weil. Rabbi Nachmann of Breslau, St Francis of Assisi.

I suspect that the immediate inspiration for this beautiful work is Neil MacGregor's HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 100 OBJECTS and Tom Standage's HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN SIX GLASSES. These in turn derive-- at least superficially-- from Foucault's ARCHAEOLOGY OF KNOWLEDGE. The basic idea in all of these is that we need to periodically dig up the past all over again in order to determine if we really have our facts straight as well as the superstructure of interpretations that rest on them. THE BRONTE CABINET is one of a number of new studies of history and collective biography that go back to a ground zero.

Dr Lutz's strong theory that Catherine Earnshaw's bed/cabinet contraption is a "portal" to another universe opens up possibilities. Here, as she points out, C S Lewis probably got his idea for the passage into Narnia and perhaps George MacDonald himself got the idea of the four dimensional mirror in the early chapters of LILITH. Dr Lutz is able to go deep into any Bronte text and connect the dots in amazing ways.

I recommend THE BRONTE CABINET because it makes such a strong case for the immortality of Emily and Charlotte-- and who will ever know the true role of Branwell as Emily's possible collaborator (and model for certain characters). Anne on the other hand, gave some interesting variations on such central tropes as the governess and the mistreated wife. Perhaps she too was some kind of missing link/catalyst.

So dig in to THE BRONTE CABINET. You will benefit from seeing the Brontes from some unexpected angles which will reinforce what we know about one of history's most extraordinary families.

It is a handbook!

My first time to read the handbook and I was not disappointed. Coming from a decidedly Democratic household growing up I slowly learned I was being lied to more and more by liberal forces. Actually what is left out is the most damaging. This book brings it home just how bad things have gotten with our media, education system and apparent mental illness of liberal thought. From the real beginning of the country, the civil rights movement, global warming, welfare and most importantly the uniqueness that is America. Too many things to mention and if you want to know the real story on the important topics of our time you need to read this book. I even think the binding is cool.
But this is not for the feint of heart. When I read the real mechanics of partial birth abortion I was first shocked that I did not know. Second I checked it out myself (yes, I even check Phil these days) and third tears came to my eyes and I almost cried. The violent murder of a viable, defenseless baby that just wants to live is the most despicable individual thing I have ever read. And it's legal. People need to be informed and this book is a big step in the right direction.

From effect to cause

As one of the contributing authors, I was very excited to read the contributions by the other authors. Each of us shares a unique perspective on how to bullyproof the youth of today - but the key theme is to move children from effect (trying to stop a bully's actions in some way)... which is how most "anti-bully" campaigns are focused, towards helping the children live at cause (becoming the type of person who is immune to the effects of bullying in the first place). Ultimately, no one can make you feel bad without your permission.

I welcome you to explore this edition of Bullyproof, plus the previous editions for tips, strategies, tactics, and stories of how some pretty amazing individuals have shifted their own lives and the lives of others towards the positive. I am humbled to have the opportunity to contribute, and I hope my chapter helps more families and kids to make improvements in their lives! Game on, yo!

Highly recommend.

I've read this book and highly recommend it to all friends and family. It is very insightful with what has become a national problem for our children. Whether you have a child at home, a grandparent, uncle, aunt, or teacher this book will help you to recognize the behavior of both bully and victim. At a cost of only 99¢ this is an exceptional value for the information it offers.

This book was an informative read. I particularly liked the chapter on the political shift of the democratic party towards socialism from the 20th century into the 21st. It gave a good and insightful historical perspective. The chapter on Hillary Clinton as U.S. Secretary of State helped me to understand how the current middle-east situation got that way. It had information I had not seen before presented in a way that helped educate me about the issues and policies important to Hillary Clinton. It also give's me an idea of what she might try to implement if she became President.
I recommend this book.
