Real Men Wear Beige is a fascinating look at a journey through the US criminal justice system that's truly unique in its perspective and delivery.
Like most people, before author Donato Alfredano gets caught up in the system, he's hardly given the issue of prison a thought. But his unanticipated arrest at JFK Airport on a charge of official misconduct was a reality check that would forever change his views on incarceration, and on a larger scale, life.
Donato's deeply expressive story chronicles his passage through the New York criminal justice system and onto a brief stint at the infamous Rikers Island, then to his local county jail to await his sentencing hearing, eventually landing in state prison on a five-year sentence.
One thing that stands out in this provocative narrative is the surprising diversity of personalities and experiences, which makes this book an invaluable resource for those interested in gaining a fuller view of the incarceration picture.
Real Men Wear Beige has a corresponding Audio Soundtrack and CD, featuring songs Donato wrote to express the emotions and events swirling around him and his fellow inmates. It includes guest appearances by some notable recording artists and musicians. The Soundtrack is available at rmwbeige.com

The author lays out a crisp and very stark picture of life behind bars. The things I've seen on TV or think I know about prison are nothing compared with the story told here in this engaging book. Each page made me want to read more. Informative and captivating in his style the author draws the reader into his life behind bars.

I was hooked from the moment I cracked open Real Men Wear Beige. Told from the perspective of a well educated, thoughtful, middle aged musician / public servant, Don Alfredano, who becomes embroiled in a purely political scandal and lands in the clink for cheating on his expense report, this book is a compelling account of just how quickly any of our lives can go south after a seemingly innocuous indiscretion.
The book is also a survival guide for law abiding non-career-criminal types who, for whatever reason, may find themselves incarcerated. Alfredano conveys both the horror and humanity of jail and prison life, with enough levity and swashbuckling action to captivate the reader all the way through the final word. The imagery is so visual that I imagined I was watching a feature film while reading...

‘In prison, when both sides come together, they form a bizarre, amusing, sometimes ironic examples of unadulterated humanity'
By Grady Harp
Don Alfredano is a writer, a musician, and a dreamer and believes that having an open heart, an open mind, and being able to seek out the best in others is invaluable. His books provide examples of unadulterated humanity, from despair to joy, from heartache to triumph. His initial publication dealt with is personal life as a father of a son with autism who overcame all odds to become a highly respected physicist. Now Don turns to another aspect of his fascinating life – his time served in prison on an official misconduct charge. It is fascinating reading, revelatory, and further proof that Don is one of our important memoirists and champions of humanity in a time when just such a figure is needed.
Don opens his memoir with a telling Introduction: ‘“Prison.” “Jail.” “Incarceration.” What comes to mind when people think of these words? What comes to mind when they think of our criminal justice system? There is a dictionary’s worth of words that flash through the average person’s mind— words and terms like “penitentiary,” “the slammer,” “big house,” or “the pokey.” How about prison inmates? In all probability, the words that come to mind include “delinquents,” “criminals,” “felons,” or “gangsters.” Or maybe you’re one of those who prefers “dirt bags,” “scum of the earth,” or some other choice derogatory term for those supposedly disgusting outcasts of society. Is there even one positive thing that comes to mind when people think of prison? I’ll bet I’m 99 percent accurate in saying the answer is no. Yet what do people really know about prison and the criminal justice system? Unlike most other things in life, for which people can formulate opinions and pass judgment based on experience and familiarization, prison is essentially an enigma to the “average Joe.” Other than what they see in movies and on television, they have no realistic idea of how the criminal justice system truly functions, what daily life in prison is actually like, and, most importantly, just who criminals are. My point is this: it’s natural that we all think about prison and jail in the negative sense because, arguably, it is a place for people who have either wronged society or broken some rules. Yes, naturally, the punitive nature of prison fosters thoughts of retribution and revulsion in all of us to some degree or another. However, what we so easily forget to consider is, in actuality, the core of the matter— and that is humanity. Damned right. It’s all about people. Not just other people, but people like your son or daughter, mother or father, sister, brother, or friend. We deal with the idea of prison the same way we deal with cancer. We merely latch on to complacency and focus on the reassuring notion that “it could never happen to me.” This natural defense mechanism is simply our way of shielding ourselves from life’s harsh realities. That, in and of itself, is not necessarily a bad thing. However, if we stop there, enlightenment and empathy are absent, and we stand to learn nothing. From the perspective of someone who has spent a little bit of time behind those concrete walls and steel bars, I’m going to reveal some hard, cold facts about prison life through my expressive and provocative story.’
Don’s manner of relating his experiences and responses to his imprisonment make for extraordinary reading. ‘The mind’s amazing ability to endure and overcome relentless emotional pain and suffering is nothing short of a miracle.’ This book happens to be one of the more fascinating and illuminating books of the year. Interesting but needed more backstory
By Mr. Swearengen
Real Men Wear Beige was definitely an interesting read. Donato literally takes readers through his incarceration in the United States step by step. My complaint about the book is that there was no reason to cheer him on, nothing that made the reader like or even know about him in order for us to care that he was being mistreated at times. I really think the author needed to start the book with a strong backstory, letting us get to know about his good qualities, his family, maybe some good things he's done, some redeeming qualities. All we know of him when we start reading is that he finds the penal system uncomfortable and unfair. Yep, that's the penal code. It's not really supposed to be a comfortable experience. I understand his point that he was a white collar criminal, but if he wanted me to even take that into consideration and use that as an excuse for me to side with him, I really needed to know him and care about his life. I couldn't help but think that he came off more as entitled than anything. He started telling us how it wasn't fair that he was processed the way he was, how it shouldn't be this way because he only did this white collar crime, his poor wife circling the airport because he wasn't allowed to say goodbye. Well, true, but he definitely comes across as above-the-law in his narration. I also didn't enjoy the way he described some of the characters. If it was a Caucasian person, nothing physical was ever described. If there was an African American or Puerto Rican person, he used just that label in telling about this person. I didn't understand why the woman on the plane needed to be a black woman. If it was so important for us to picture her, he should have gone into more detail other than the color of her skin. He also repeated phrases and cliches a little too much for my liking. I did feel that some of the employees of the corrections department were deplorable and it was upsetting to read about those people abusing their positions, and for that I feel badly for anyone, including Mr. Alfredano. The description of what it was like to be imprisoned was well-written and extremely interesting. However, if he wanted me to root for him and his story, I just wasn't able to as much as I probably could have. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Inspirational!
By SUSAN M. ANDERSON
Real Men Wear Beige delivers a true dose of reality and a vivid snapshot of humanity. The backdrop is the court system, county jail, and state prison. Alfredano gives us a personal glimpse into prison culture – one man’s journey through the maze of criminal justice system and incarceration. He speaks in universal tones when he describes the sense of abandonment he experienced behind bars. Having become one of society’s underdogs, one of the accused, expelled and locked up, he longed for someone to come forward and remind the world of who he really was, waiting for a simple mention of just one redeeming quality, a positive declaration, a reminder that he was actually kind and decent. But no one stepped up to counter the negative persona inflicted on him by the authorities and the press. As he waited, Alfredano mused, “Count all those friends you think you have in your life right now and cherish the moment. Friends are like dust in the wind.” From the beginning to its inspirational end, Alfredano’s story is one of strength, perseverance, and enlightenment.
