About the Author
Prakash Kona lives in Hyderabad, India. He completed his doctoral studies with a comparative study of Chomsky, Derrida and Wittgenstein at the University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS. He has recently returned to Hyderabad after a stint as assistant professor of English Literature and Humanities at Eastern Mediterranean University in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Prakash believes in, among other things, the power of alternate discourses and the ideal of a classless society. He is the author of two previous books of poetry published in Calcutta.

the price of 14 dollars is significant, I think?

An endless marathon thru the streets of consciousness of Hyderabad that sort of eats its own tail. I read a review on this book before writing this review, hey I take this matter seriously how many times do you get the opportunity to write the first review on Amazon for a book of this grandeur,and I just wanted to make sure someone else was as confused and incoherent as I will definitely be in writing this. Well, the reviewer was on his third try on a review of this book for a periodical that was only taking submissions for stories that involved sex or death. Actually they are not big topics for me, but the reviewer made some good points which I share. You know how literary folks talk of James Joyce and Faulkner employing the technique of stream of consciousness in their writings? Well Kona does something similar but I think the terms are misleading. To me they imply that you are piercing somehow into a projection of how these authors think while they are thinking but really what you are reading is art, what they are writing is art, and it shows the process of making art almost in live time without video replay and that is what Kona is doing too, this book is art. So you are not witnessing what people are thinking while they are thinking but getting a good view at how to understand how art is made while it is being made. So let's explore the similarities and the differences. I usually try to stay away from explanation type reviews but since this is the only review and this book is very odd I think it will be fun and maybe helpful to you. Of course I have no idea how you got here but it was on the streets of Amazon and folks this book and page is in the swampiest part of that nexus of streets. So here goes nothing. Remember the old Cadillacs, the cars? Well they had a function as a car and then they had a style, that is a weight, environment and decor for people, appointments like fins, colors, etc. Words are like that too, they have uses and meanings and style. Joyce is great with style, hypnotizing almost. Faulkner too, but he does have some meaning too. Kona has style, rhythm and balance. But the words dissolve into meaning so quickly. Unfortunately as the above synopsis explains Kona actually took Chomsky and Derrida seriously and studied them. This of course has greatly affected his use of meaning. Those old Cads had an ignition but no cognition. Let me explain that with a personal entry. On page 124 of the book I realized something. Up to then I knew I was in a marathon and I was getting tired all the time in the read. So every once and awhile I would stop to relax, let my eyes relax, take some deep breaths before the next plunge back into the street. So when I was about to stop I would think about where to stop and then if I stopped there if it would be Okay. Now in this book that meant not looking for an end of a chapter, no. That did not mean looking for the end of a paragraph, no. That did mean looking for a period, sometimes. I mean I like to rest at turning points everyone does, right? Well I have read some sanskrit, really I have. And if you do someday you will see that it is a language that is only used in song and to the gods. It is only written and never spoken. And what is nice is that the words just go together. The song is one giant word or run-on of symbols. So to translate you have to figure out where our spaces between our words would go. Kona is like that but he does separate the words since he is writing in English. But back to my experience, on page 124, I realized that much of what I was reading had little meaning to me so why was I worrying about where to stop and then restart. I mean I did not understand most of it any way. I know that is the influence of Chomsky and Derrida since they are opaque to me also. The former invents organs because he can and the other tells you to hit a baseball with a stop-action swing. But please understand that this lack of understanding is not bad, on the contrary it is the essence of good and great art. Take Dylan, leave Henny Youngman out of this too, take Desolation Row or the Ballad of a Thin Man, I love those songs. I listen to them all the time. The reason I can is I do not understand them, I just reflect, they make my mind wander and wonder of things. Everytime it is new. That is art to me? So Kona is like that but he has no chorus so you get very tired. Some of Kona's lines are oh so choice though. Marathons pass by some very choice places sometimes. Think of this, Dylan comes to NY instead of going to the village he meets Ginsburg and they go to Warhol's place, Andy says great you guys take turns anytime you want and just sing for the next week straight thru and I will film it and then when we show it we will make the people sit in the theatre for five days straight to view it, we will give them the week-end off, I will edit a bit but remember guys no chorus. Well, I could go on and on and on, but I think you get the idea about this book. If this review makes you dizzy if it seems pointless and messy and unstructured and whatever in nature then I would suggest you avoid this book like the plague but if perchance you like experiments with maybe no purpose and art for no sake and wandering strange streets to smell dying roses then I tell you to buy this book and reread it as often as you like since that is the meaning of this book.
