Aaron Burr in Exile: A Pariah in Paris, 1810-1811, by Jane Merrill, John Endicott

Aaron Burr--Revolutionary War hero, third vice president of the United States and a controversial figure of the early republic--was tried and acquitted of treason charges in 1807, and thereafter departed for self-imposed exile in Europe, his political career in ruins. Adrift in Paris for 15 months, he led a marginal existence on the run from creditors and the courts, getting by on handouts. While other Americans in Paris enjoyed official status that insulated them from life in the capital, Burr dreamed up fruitless schemes and pawned his possessions, yet remained in high spirits, enjoying Parisian theater and cafes. He shopped, flirted, paid for sex and associated with friends old and new while gathering the resolve to return to America.
Burr's Paris journal is a rare item, with only 250 unexpurgated copies printed in 1903. In it he relates his fascinating stories and describes Parisian life at the height of Napoleon's power. Drawing on Burr's journal and other sources, this book provides a self-portrait of the down-and-out Founding Father abroad.

Illuminating and fascinating
By Diane G
I love reading biographies of early Americans. I learn so much from them, not only about the individual, but about the time in which he/she lived—about our country and the world. I think we don’t get nearly enough of that in school. And so, I started "Aaron Burr in Exile" with anticipation that was quickly and enormously rewarded.

The focus on the book is Burr’s life in Paris in the early 1800s. Drawing on his journals as well as other resources, the authors describe how the life he left behind in the States continued to have a huge impact on him in exile. As I read the book, I couldn’t help but think that Alexander Hamilton, whom Burr killed in the duel, is now the subject of a hot Broadway play. It seems to me that Burr and his time in Paris, as related in this book, would make an equally enthralling subject for a play—Napoleon demanding that he be kicked out of France, his struggle for food and housing, the women he courted, his desperation to return to the United States, where he was also unwanted. As in the book, there would be references how close he came to being the U.S. president, and of course, explanations as to why and how he went to Paris (the duel, the treason charge).

But a play, no matter how good it is, tells only a piece of the story, and "Aaron Burr in Exile" tells it all. I highly recommend it for everyone who loves American history and Paris.

For Connoisseurs of American and French History
By Peter Tavino
Among the many dozens of books I have read about Burr, Exile ranks on top with Parton, Kennedy and Isenberg. The collaboration between the co-authors produces a reading result that is greater than from a single source author. The tragedy of our Revolutionary War hero who tied Jefferson for the presidency, being humbled to poverty abroad in his fifties is clearly captured. I loved how the artist Vanderlyn, encouraged by Burr in New York and then praised by Napoleon in Paris, assists his mentor in time of need.
Always a charmer, we share Aaron's encounters with les femmes, and visit the Louvre with him. The detailed narratives and wonderful images of Napoleon’s Paris set us there two centuries ago. (I urged my childhood friend Anthony, now a Parisian citizen, to read this immediately.)
Burr's journal abroad is opened for the first time to us all, with delightful stories of the former vice president rebuilding a smoky chimney and investing in a "vinegar from trees" process. We walk in the rain with him as he crosses the more distant non-toll bridge across the Seine, shopping for special books. His denial of a passport by Napoleon, after Burr hosted his brother Joseph Bonaparte at his former NY mansion, is poignant. We cheer when he is finally allowed to return to daughter Theodosia.

You'll be surprised at what you discover about the time Burr spent in Paris!
By Janice H. MacDonald
This is not the typical book which I would read with my book club, so, as a history lover, I read it independently, and will now definitely recommend it to the club! The author's writing style kept me engaged as I was more intrigued with each page! I found the subject matter interesting and intelligent! What really happened while Burr was in Paris? Although most of us are familiar with Burr's duel and its results, his months in Paris are certainly not well known. The excerpts from Burr's journal were well placed within the chapters as were the insights into his mindset, the life style (and fashion) of that time period. Keeping a journal during that time period was not unique, however, the journal excerpts were quite detailed as he discussed meals, his living quarters and affairs of the heart. Quite enjoyable. I highly recommend this book!
