Insulating Your Family from Poor Public Policy
By Fritz R. Ward
Jonathan Bartlett is concerned about the direction of public policy in the United States. And he has good reason to be concerned. The US government takes a large portion of his income (and yours) but cannot begin to pay its bills with what it takes in. To make up the difference, the US has resorted to massive borrowing at artificially low interest rates, a policy that has historically led to inflation and devaluation of currency. More than a few economists acknowledge this problem and several books have been written on the topic, often with titles along the lines of "How to profit from the coming end of the world." But Bartlett's book is different. First, he does not believe the world is ending. He does think it likely that inflation will seriously cut into what savings he has, and he is legitimately concerned about how he will be able to retire, and how his children will fare with the bills our generation is producing at seemingly record pace.
His solution is not some get rich quick scheme, but rather a plan to partially remove himself and his family from the money economy we live in, an economy which is largely controlled by the state and by corporations. (Bartlett is somewhat to the right on the political spectrum and hence emphasizes the government, while those who complain about corporations are generally somewhat to the left, but both organizations often collude with each other and each benefits when citizens are coerced into utilizing their services.) For the most part, the ideas Bartlett proposes are well within the means of almost everyone. Take up gardening. Aside from the fact that it is a healthy activity in and of itself, you can partially liberate yourself from the need for purchasing food. Buy things of lasting value, say sterling silver, that you can pass on to your children, instead of consumer goods that are outdated every few years. Invest a little in nutrition and try to limit your reliance on health care. (Bartlett does admit this latter point is somewhat problematic in light of changes to our health care laws. We will soon have to pay for the poor decisions of our neighbors since universal health coverage requires the more healthy to subsidize others, but still, good health often is its own reward.) Bartlett further notes that barter is, occasionally, a good alternative to monetary transactions, especially on a local scale. You can take steps to learn to defend yourself. And finally, you can explore alternative schooling and genuine life long education. None of these ideas are beyond the reach of the average person, though all of them require some planning and foresight.
For my part, I found myself both intrigued by and at the same time familiar with many of Bartlett's ideas. It was almost as if I had seen them before. And upon further reflection, I had seen them before, in the writings of Mildred Loomis, who along with Ralph Borsodi, was one of the founders of the homesteader movement. This movement grew out of the Great Depression and further inspired many among the then "new left" of the 1960s. The interesting thing about the homesteader movement was that participants did indeed survive social and economic upheaval better than those around them by emphasizing a "small is beautiful" philosophy that, while it sometimes romanticised subsistence living, still offered a genuine alternative to the corporate world America became under the New Deal and thereafter. The Homestead movement eventually died out, or at the very least became less vocal, in part because the deregulation and lower tax rates of the 1980s and 1990s was beneficial to small business and society became increasingly wealthy. But in the Bush and Obama years, the trend towards government taking a more pro growth set of policies has waned. Despite the class warfare rhetoric that has come in particular from the Obama administration, the trend is once again toward the state supporting large corporations and limiting their competition. Such policies are inherently hardest on the middle class and poor, so it may be time to start a new homesteading movement. Although originally a movement of the cultural left, Bartlett's book suggests this new movement might truly cross political boundaries, and that in and of itself bodes well for its future success.

Stepping into value
By Dave
Over decades of writing about public policy one of the most frequent questions is, "What can we do?" One answer in a personal way is found in the new book MicroSecession by author Jonathan Bartlett. It speaks to how the individual can add value regardless of what the economy or the government does. Talk show hosts are seeing strong public interest in the subject.
MicroSecession, as the jacket notes, "isn't about getting rich, overthrowing the government, or abandoning civilization." The work focuses on practical ideas for increasing personal value on the ground and, in some cases, from the ground up "giving yourself independence by decreasing your dependence" as Bartlett writes.
MicroSecession is also personal in both implementation and in Bartlett's family stories of experience putting principles in action. As he writes in thanks to his wife, "who still loved me even after I converted the children's play-set into a chicken coop, and whose only warning that we were getting these new members of our family was a text message from me saying, I took the boys cruising to pick up some chicks."
The first section of three chapters speaks of general economics and some on the "idiocy of government." An economist and former tax compliance officer who reviewed that section for this review suggests it is one of the most clear, simple and accurate descriptions of economy he has ever read. For example, MicroSecession highlights how everything you spend is with "after tax dollars," thus your effort in working is generally required to be 33 percent greater (depending on your tax bracket).
Bartlett also covers in a personal conversational way the decision to be a one-income rather than a two-income family. From the expected salary then after taxes then after child care then after additional transportation, clothing etc, is that extra salary really worth it? Each family must decide for themselves, but Bartlett outlines in depth the debate.
Do you plant a garden? Besides the obvious advantage of higher quality vegetables, a garden can help teach responsibility and patience to children - good to learn when young.
Now back to the chicken coop. In most cities, you can keep a small number of chickens in your back yard. They make less mess and noise than a dog. They eat bugs you don't want. They are easy to care for and care is relatively inexpensive. They can be entertaining and they produce food people eat on a regular basis. It's all good.
There are other tips and ideas in MicroSecession that may not be your cup of tea, but the book does note dandelions make delicious tea. Bartlett writes about self-sufficiency in nature. If you get hungry on a walk or bicycle ride, what about a wild onion growing in God's green earth?
After reading MicroSecession, one family decided they would learn how to press cheese. The book didn't point to that particular craft, but the larger message of MicroSecession is to encourage us to review daily activities, interests, and hobbies to find additional values. Find free money - it's easy, just save some.
MicroSecession is expressly not for the wealthy. It does not advise on trust funds, off-shore accounts or various bonds - there are many books that tell rich people how to protect assets. MicroSecession offers projects and perspectives for individual families to save precious after tax dollars from modest investments of $10, $20, or $100 - pocket change.
The topic must be popular. National talk show host, Joe Cristiano with Liberty Talk Radio has had Bartlett on twice. Media take note - this is personal economics everyone should consider.

Turn Frustration into Productivity
By Jeff Burritt
It's easy to see problems. It's easy to feel frustrated. It's easy to know things need to change.
But it's harder to turn angst into clear thinking, and go even further by stepping into productive action.
That's what Micro Secession by Jonathan Bartlett helps you do.
