About the Author
The author is a native of Texas who spent much of his adult life in aviation He served in Viet Nam with the USAFs First Air Commando Wing and flew 70 combat missions as a navigator on B-26 attack bombers. Discharged from the service for injuries received in a plane crash, he became a crop-duster pilot on the Texas/Mexico border. Today he owns a fiberglass molding shop in his hometown, Marquez, Texas

This book would have won awards with some editing. Don't look here if you want The Aneid or the effete prose of some cloistered wannabe pretending to know what they're talking about. As it stands, Border Pilot is one of the most honest and enthralling works I have had the pleasure to read. Here is the chronicle of Maurice Bourne's adventures in the world of aerial application, depicting a group of authentic people in a hardscrabble contest to make a living while trying to stay alive in a very dangerous, unforgiving business. Lacking any self-congratulation or false modesty, this is the story of a plain-spoken man, his friends and some often hilarious observations of human character, aviation -- and even some Mexican justice for good measure. It is also a fascinating look at an aspect of aviation hardly ever talked about, portrayed with the unvarnished veracity of someone who cared enough to sit down, bone-exhausted, and put pen to paper.

The Best Aviation Book I've Ever Read

I found Maurice's book a few years ago. Contemplating a career change, I was searching for information on cropdusting and at this time he had the entire book free online. After reading a chapter called "Sitting in the Seat" I was hooked and after reading a little more I decided that cropdusting wasn't for me. I'm not much of a reviewer or a writer... All I can say is that the book is great. It's probably not going to win any literary awards but it's a beautiful thing all the same. It's got some great pilots stories. It flows from beginning to end. It's funny. It's heart breaking. Parts of it are nothing short of brilliant. The author really comes through as a down to earth, humble, decent guy. You can't help but love him. His writing pulls you in and you never want it to end. How many books have done that for you? I've read a bunch of flying books and this is the best.

This is one of the most skillfully written books I've ever read. It manages to be down to earth, yet symbolic, allegorical, and gives the feeling that it is dealing with the subject that is beyond all human understanding. The prose is beautiful, the pacing is flawless, and the content as sharp as a knife blade.
I've read practically ever book on aviation that has received even the slightest recommendation -- perhaps more than 300 books. This is the best.
I've read many other books on other subjects. This ranks as one of the great ones. Buy the book and read it.
