About the Author
Jock Noble is the Lead of World Visions Economic Development Learning Hub for the Middle East and Eastern Europe. After a career of trying to teach turtles to fly he finally got into the water and is learning to swim with them.Jock has worked in twenty countries with most time spent in India, Kenya, Indonesia, USA , Australia and Armenia. He believes our challenge is to help instill hope and a genuine sense of self-belief in communities, starting with those of us who somehow end up working in development.

Profound observations around development, cultures and human behavior, combined with generous doses of humor

Stories from the Road is a genuine mix of sage, international experience with profound observations around development, cultures and human behavior. It wonderfully reflects Jock's generous sense of humor regarding situations, outcomes and even himself. He reminds the reader that life's episodes (and certainly development work!) is woven together by humor. The stories in Stories from the Road calls our attention to looking first for the positive and the lighter side, trying to see what works (or worked), even while we strive (sometimes struggle) to make sense out of complicated paradigms.
Each of the 10 stories could easily be the basis for a university lecture & lively discussion, opening the eyes and raising the awareness of students and/or practicing professionals. Highly recommended for development practitioners and other professionals working towards the Sustainable Development Goals, empowering economic development and poverty alleviation.

Stories with reality checks

This excellent little book brings together the stories that Noble uses to empower the groups with which he works and his thoughtful reflections on why the stories have been so powerful in producing useful outcomes and transformational thinking that has lead to real transformational development. Anyone who has ever worked in trying to help with community development will smile knowingly at the stories that often point to our failures to listen and comprehend the real issues and our willingness to help with problems that don't exist for the community members themselves. A wonderful self depreciating style makes this book very readable because it doesn't point so much to solutions as to the need for an attitude and approach that taps into what already exists with in the groups that aid and development expertise goes to help. Well worth a read and some follow up reflection.
