About the Author
Raymond Tallis trained as a doctor before going on to become Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Manchester. He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences for his research in clinical neuroscience. He retired from medicine in 2006 to become a full-time writer. He has published over a dozen books of cultural criticism and philosophical anthropology including, most recently, "The Kingdom of Infinite Space" (2008), "Aping Mankind" (Acumen, 2011), and "In Defence of Wonder" (Acumen, 2012).

Great reading from a humanist philospher who has enough

of an understanding of medicine (he is a medical doctor) and hard science to seriously challenge "scientism" and demonstrate the problem with looking at human existence in a way that ignores the person (the "I") that is doing the living. This is a series of wide-ranging essays and was a pleasure to read

A physician considers metaphysics

Dr Tallis is a retired physician who specialised in geriatric medicine. In this series of essays, he deals with some of the broader metaphysical issues raised both by the current scientific paradigm and by our treatment of our fellow human beings. His presentation of his chosen topics is resolutely non-religious, and where he chooses to draw conclusions he presents them to the reader in a fully rational and very persuasive manner. I've passed the book on to my children in the hope that they will be as convinced by Dr Tallis's arguments as I am.

Brilliant

The essays on Caring and not Caring, Medical ethics and The Right to an Assisted Death should be obligatory reading for all health care professionals. Beautifully written and argued with logic.
