About the Author
Mark Boyter is a writer, traveler, marathon runner, and cinephile in Vancouver. He is also something of an oenophile, preferring bold Californians and spicy Aussies, although he is apt to indulge in French vintages when he can afford them (and sometimes even when he can't), as well as BC wines on yearly trips to the vineyards of the Okanagan.
Until recently a college ESL instructor, Mark taught ESL for 25 years in Nagoya, Japan; Sharjah, UAE; Kyoto, Japan; Toronto, Canada; and in both Richmond and New Westminster BC, Canada.
He holds a BA in Economics and Business Administration from SFU in Burnaby, BC, and an MAT from The School For International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. The SIT sticker in the back window of his car confuses many people. To alleviate this confusion, he is in an active search for a STAND sticker.
In Vancouver, he lives sometimes alone in a condo that has a view to the north shore mountains which reminds of the view from his mother's kitchen, and sometimes with his partner of many years Iris and their three cats: Rumi, Noor and Kobra.

Crescent Moon Over Laos

A wonderful story about Laos, and it's people, just after it opened it's borders to travellers. The author was one of the first travellers to enter Laos. An up-close portrayal of the exotic beauty and the flaws of Laos. An honest portrayal of the author's feelings as he encounters dangerous, sublime, and absurd situations.

A Journey Through Uncertainity

In this day and age when we are told and directed (over and over again it seems) by parents, bank institutions and eye catching advertisements ( the list goes on) to hold steadfast to everything that is certain, secure and a "good investment", it is so refreshing to read a book that allows you to "let go of this illusion" by taking you on a journey into absolute uncertainty. Mark Boyter does this so excellently and flawlessly in his newest novel, Crescent Moon Over Laos!
Clearly, the uncertainty of life wells up in his opening line as he asks, "who would want to shoot us?...who would want to shoot me?" From these two questions, Boyter spring boards into a recount of his 17 day sojourn through Laos shortly after it re-opened its borders to westerners in the early 90's. What entails is an epic apprisal of soul searching dimensions for both a simple man, culture and country!
Yes, the world contains uncertainities that are as bountiful as much as they are beautiful! Crescent Moon Over Laos demonstrates this in refreshing vigor and candor; and yet, amongst these uncertainities, one thing is for certain - this book is a hit - an absolute must read! Do your soul a favour and enjoy this wonderful novel!

Crescent Moon Over Laos, by Mark Boyter, takes the reader to Laos in the early 1990s, a time when that country was just opening its borders to the outside world. The author succeeds in capturing the mindset of travelers who seek the "unspoiled" parts of the globe and has some interesting insights on the question of whether or not such travelers are not actually spoiling the unspoiled by their presence there. A reader interested in the issue of cultural chauvinism will encounter more than a few interesting episodes in the book that provide food for thought.
Boyter has a knack for seeing the humanity in people as well as their foibles and the absurdities that result from them. His observations are conveyed in smooth, engaging and easy to read prose. The book is interspersed with anecdotes (often quite personal ones) from the author's life and from experiences in other Asian countries, especially Japan and Nepal, but these only serve to enhance the narrative and underscore the points the writer wants to make. In the end, this story about travels through Laos is very much about a journey through life that many readers will find interesting, easy to relate to and, indeed, to reflect upon.
