Another home run - or shall I say touchdown from Hart. This is the second of the series about the Miami Sharks, and also about the Stanford Five, which includes Birdie's cousin Ana and Jack's financial manager Ronnie DuMond. Ronnie is a brilliant financial manager with two degrees in finance and a law degree, as well as a successful business at the age of 27. She had a relationship with one of Jack's teammates who broker her heart. She has built walls "the height of China's" around her heart and no one is getting in.
Chase Bedford, successful NFL Coach and three time Super Bowl winner, does not know of Ronnie's walls. He has become intrigued with her on the basis of some phone calls. When he comes to her house for a face-to-face, he is floored by her beauty, her intellect and her youth!
Ronnie has her walls up and eventually rejects Chase, but he won't take no for an answer. Lots of pain and pleasure, as well as the entire DuMond family, get involved in this one. Some bad things happen but the pair persevere. Well done, Lea!

Kind of all over the place for me
By Chitown Reader
I'd recommend any book by Ms. Hart but I'll be honest and say that this one is my least favorite. I'd highly recommend the Coronado series if you haven't read those. I can't re-read those enough. My respect for the author's talent in writing that series earns this book three stars when I would otherwise go for two.
I won't repeat the plot summary but there wasn't a lot to it imho. There's no real conflict, mystery or anything to keep me engaged. Ronnie was presented as a smart, beautiful and accomplished woman. She uses her law degree in acting as a financial planner for her clients who are largely professional athletes. Chase Bedford is an NFL coach who wants to join Ronnie's client list. While the bedroom scenes are well written by Ms. Hart, their discussions out of bed are repetitive and almost inane. I like the possessiveness that Chase demonstrates because it's based in genuine love and protectiveness rather than control. I love that he takes care of Ronnie when the need arises. I was unable to see Ronnie as equally invested in their growing relationship or caring as deeply. I resented that on Chase's behalf and it seemed like he deserved better. When something bad happened to her at the end of the book, he was there for her and she didn't value that nearly as much as she should have.
The editing seemed off on this one, too. From Anna (Ana) to peace (piece) and other misses, any mistake surprised me because I don't recall errors in the previous books. As always, I love the playlist and storyboard (Go Bears!) I can't bash a Hart book but obviously I couldn't relate to this one...maybe next time. Judging from the reviews, I'm in the minority and that makes me happy because it reassures me that the lack of connection is my own issue and allows me to look forward to the next Hart.

Never loved football before until I started reading First Down and Second Down!

I have read practically every book by Lea Hart and I would have to say this was probably the most heartrending/heartwarming of all of them. The phrase in the book describing Ronnie as having a "strong mind and a fragile heart" is perfect. In the beginning we see that there is an instant attraction between Ronnie and Chase but then Chase comes VERY close to blowing it. Ronnie, having been burned before, is in no mood to put up with men who aren't brave enough to take her on. Chase realizes pretty quickly that Ronnie is his future and never stops working to be with her. Think that's enough of the book? NO! We have a couple of other incidents that put the couple through their paces and Chase shows he is just the man for her! Even though this book could be read as a standalone, read First Down first. Actually really all the Coronado series and work your way to Second Down. Meeting all these characters along the way is fun. If you read "First Down", then "Second Down" you get to see an additional love story in the making! I am looking forward to additional books in this series because we will continue to see these characters and I want to see how Ronnie will get what she wants most (besides Chase!).
