“This new volume by Andresen and Carter stands to change the way we teach sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. With analytical depth, eclectic breadth, history, biology, and culture, it is a brilliant addition to our pedagogical arsenal.” Norma Mendoza-Denton, University of California, Los Angeles

“The authors enthusiastically lead us along new pathways, proving that Linguistics as an exploratory science, and discoveries await. They illuminate the many ways in which ‘Language loops in and around itself,’ creating a web of knowledge that connects us all. This book is an ideal introductory text for a course in Languages of the World or Introduction to Linguistics.”—K. David Harrison, Swarthmore College

Andresen and Carter allow any language enthusiast to better consider language as a social product
By Salvatore Callesano
The authors captivate their audience through a rich discussion of how extra-linguistic topics, such as culture, biology, history, and politics, interact with and have the ability to change all of the world’s languages. Each chapter presents vivid images of how notions of power, movement, and time affect the ways in which language interacts with society and culture. From the Australian Walkabout to the Tamil Tigers and from the Mexico/U.S. border to the Mayan Highlands, Andresen and Carter allow any language enthusiast to better consider language as a social product. Linguists will enjoy the relevant language profiles in each chapter, which help readers to visualize the languages as they are discussed in their array of sociopolitical contexts. As a whole, this book is perfect for linguists of any level as it provides a viewpoint towards language that is often overlooked.

Good read
By Amazon Customer
I learned so much from reading this book, both about the structures of the worlds languages and the ways that language has been shaped by culture and politics. I would highly recommend this book for any language enthusiast. The fact that the authors write that they are donating their royalties to support endangered languages only makes it better
