Review
"Nick Licata is a rare combination of things: a thinker who knows grassroots activism, an idealist who can pragmatically wield power, and a politician who knows how to change culture. His compact book distills a career of great citizenship into simple lessons and memorable stories. I hope it inspires a new generation to become activists, in and out of office."
—Eric Liu, founder and CEO of Citizen University

"With plenty of real-life examples, analyses on other movements, and personal stories from Licata’s time on the Seattle City Council, “Becoming a Citizen Activist” is a thorough book that provides an excellent crash course in political activism."
—The Epoch Times

"As good a reflection on grassroots politics in the trenches as I've seen, Nick Licata's book shows how ordinary citizens can find their voices to actually change policy—and how elected leaders like Nick can help them create these changes. Having known Nick for thirty years, I've always been amazed at how he's brought unlikely constituencies together, crossing liberal and conservative lines to achieve tangible political victories. His work and this book embody what I call radical pragmatism—not being afraid to pursue a far-reaching vision, but pursuing it in the most practical of ways, because if you're running a city your solutions have to work. I love the examples and stories, the interweave of past history and present challenges, and the sense of how change occurs on the day-to-day level. It's an invaluable guide for anyone working in their communities.”
—Paul Leob, author of Soul of a Citizen and The Impossible Will Take a Little While

"Nick Licata has delivered a powerful book about becoming a citizen activist. As someone who spent most of my adult life in elected office, it is refreshing to see someone from the ‘inside’ opening the playbook for those seeking civic change and social justice. Too many times we want the home run, when getting solid hits is the most effective way of enacting change. Nick has been extremely effective over his career by building coalitions and doing the background work that produces results. Sharing his wisdom is not likely to win friends within the halls of government, but I think it will help balance the scale for those working in the trenches."
—Jim Hunt, former president of the National League of Cities and founder of Amazing Cities

"Becoming a Citizen Activist is a timely antidote to our poisoned democracy. At a time when corporations are treated as supercitizens while most individuals think of themselves only as taxpayers, Licata shares inspiring stories about the power of people and valuable advice for taking back our government."
—Jim Diers, author of Neighbor Power

"Nick Licata knows that democracy isn’t a spectator sport and that the voices of real people are needed to build the best nation possible. Through stories of successful campaigns, practical tips, and the sharing of hard won lessons, Becoming A Citizen Activist guides the reader in how they can be a part of making democracy work for everyone. An inspiring, must-read book for anyone who has ever dreamed of a better world."
—Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director of MomsRising

"Becoming a Citizen Activist is a wonderful compilation of specific anecdotes of successful social justice struggles led by ordinary people, practical tips for fighting for your cause, and compelling insights into power, politics and the medley of strategies that make change happen. No matter who you are, you’ll finish the book and be inspired to head straight out to better your community and our world.”
—Washington State Senator Pramila Jayapal, founder of OneAmerica

"Becoming a Citizen Activist provides inspiration and nuggets of practical advice for anyone who wants to fight city hall and build a better world."
—Wendy Wendlandt, Chairman of the Washington Public Interest Research Group

"Nick Licata is a treasure. In Becoming a Citizen Activist he shares the wisdom he has acquired through five decades of struggle to make the world a better place. Rich with uncanny insight and the right combination of realism and optimism, Licata has produced a book that should be mandatory reading for those seeking justice in this world. He shows that we can hold the power to make social change in our hands, if we use it and use it effectively."
—Robert W. McChesney, co-author, People Get Ready: The Fight Against a Jobless Economy and a Citizenless Democracy

"With plenty of real-life examples, analyses on other movements, and personal stories from Licata’s time on the Seattle City Council, “Becoming a Citizen Activist” is a thorough book that provides an excellent crash course in political activism."

good, basic, guide and stories
By Chris Jaronsky
I was expecting and hoping for a bit more in this book. The stories, strategies, and advice for changing the world seem to revolve around stories of the author and other people. Most of the strategies and advice seem very basic. Getting the word out used a lot of pages to cover newspapers, pamphlets, handouts, posters, TV, twitter and facebook. While facebook and twitter seem pretty obvious, the others are getting a bit dated, depending on what segment of the population you are trying to reach. I read a lot and cannot remember the last time I picked up a newspaper.

I picked this book because I am pretty unhappy with the way things happen in our country and world. Everyone appears to be entitled to something they have not earned. People are offended constantly by things that seem very inconsequential to me. Politicians are now getting a free pass to lie just to get votes, and people know they are not telling the truth and vote for them anyway. Where does it all end?

I vote and volunteer often. I was looking for strategies to help effect change in my community. While this book was good at relaying some other stories, and some of them might work for my situation, I think it falls a bit short for someone that already has some experience and knowledge of getting things done. I think it will offer some help to people new to this arena. Basically it lets them know that if they are loud and annoying to the right people, things will get done. Sometimes because things need to be addressed, sometimes just to make them go away. Either way, mission accomplished?

The Squeaky Wheel
By Antigone Walsh
It's said that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. The author, an activist, relives his past efforts to shake up the status quo. Less a guide than autobiographical account of the author's efforts, it is an easy read. His personal bent is liberal, from his days in the SDS to his foray into politics. And notwithstanding political philosophy, there is plenty of truth here.First power does rightfully belong to the people and power corrupts. the people in power do everything to preserve it. somehow they forget the the word "servant" when they are elected and have access to money, perks and influence. Most people have given away their power to an entity that cares nothing for them beyond their usefulness for staying in power. He briefly address how corporations and the mainstream Republican party hijacked the popular, grassroots Tea Party movement.

This is really a book of war stories than a practicum on activism. the tone is hopeful and perhaps a tad naive. of course you have to start somewhere so locally is a logical place to start. It's not a bad read but more an autobiography than a manual of tactics and techniques.

Useful stories, reminds one of the many ways one can "change the world"--a small step at a time
By Elisa 20
The subtitle is: "Stories, Strategies & Advice for Changing Our World". So, based on these goals, I would say that, yes, there is useful advice and there are encouraging stories, but that, no, there is not much in "strategies" for how to actually do things (hence, the four stars). The format of the book is to teach us strategies through sharing real life stories. Maybe that would work for some people, but for me I needed more details and specific steps. Clearly change involves leadership and not ever yone is a natural leader. For those who see the need, but ma not have that natural leadership talent, specific strategies to follow become all the more important until a natural leader comes along. (yes, we can say decision making is collective, but I believe groups usually work best with leadership, even the benevolent, inclusive kind).

Licata says the goal of his book is to take you "from wanting change to initiating change." He also wants to help "minimize failures and maximize successes". He wants people to embrace the idea that even if they're not public officials they can change their communities for the better. For this reason, most of the book is a collection of the "stories", case studies to learn from and be inspired by. These are varied, from the fast food workers who want higher wages to a national change like marriage equality. He urges you to look for things around you in the community that can be improved, and to remember that small changes are important in peoples' lives, not only big ones. He goes into communication methods--more interested in traditional print media than social media. Social media is included to some extent (twitter, Facebook, Youtube, ,blogging, email newsletters, but its not specific enough to be very helpful once you actually know what these things are. All in all, its a positive book, an inspiring collection of successful ways people have changed the world with very little money, time 9or in some cases , cooperation) and makes you remember to value little successes. I found it helpful.
