Three simple words that provided Kathryn Johnson, a reporter for The Associated Press’s Atlanta bureau, unprecedented access to the grieving widow in the days following her husband’s death. Johnson was on her way to a movie date when word came from Memphis that Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated. She immediately headed for the King home where, despite resistance from authorities on the scene, she was the only reporter allowed inside. Johnson’s many years covering King and his family had earned her the trust to be a discreet, observant witness to the aftermath of a defining moment in American history.
Kathryn Johnson covered the Civil Rights movement across the South in the 1960s, often risking her own safety to observe first-hand the events of this great era. Her stories took her from witnessing the integration of the University of Georgia by dressing as a student, to hiding unobserved under a table near an infamous schoolhouse door in Alabama, to marching with the massive crowd from Selma to Montgomery.
Johnson, one of the only female reporters on the scene, threw herself into charged situations with a determination to break the news no matter what. Including never-before-published photos, her personal account of this period is a singular addition to the story of the Civil Rights movement.

About the Author
Kathryn Johnson covered the civil rights movement on assignment from The Associated Press from the early sit-ins through the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Born and bred in a segregated South, Johnson had not sought the civil rights beat, but ultimately covered some of the great stories of that era, including integration of the universities of Alabama and Georgia. She was at the march from Selma and was the only reporter in the King home from the time he was assassinated until he was buried. Born in Columbus, Georgia in 1926, she attended all-female Agnes Scott College and went to work for AP in 1947 as a clerk-typist. It was not until 1959 that she got her first reporting assignment, which she held until leaving the organization in 1978. Among other assignments, she covered the wives of the American POWs, held in Hanoi during the Vietnam War, and their return from captivity to the United States beginning in 1973. She also reported on the court-martial of Lt. William Calley in 1971, who was charged with the murder of Vietnamese civilians at My Lai. She worked later for U.S. News & World Report and for CNN.

Inspiring, incredible, easy-to-read story for anyone interested in women's history, civil rights and journalism

I can't say enough good things about this book. It's an incredible story, compellingly told, inspirational for any journalist, any woman, and frankly any American who wonders if there has been progress over the last few decades in our country. Kathryn Johnson was one of the few women working as a reporter for Associated Press in the '60s, and she had to fight for her job, going to the union to get the chance she needed to prove herself as a reporter. Her stories of how she got access to some of the biggest newsmakers of the day are amazing: She literally donned an apron to serve guests in the King home after MLK died, and she dressed up like a student to walk alongside Charlayne Hunter Gault the day CHG integrated a university. She spent years befriending the wives of POWs in Vietnam, telling their stories and putting herself in position to get their husbands' stories when they came home. Where did this fearlessness and resourcefulness come from? Well, she grew up in the rural South with big brothers. Tales of her childhood include being rescued by two elderly black men from a sinking boat on a river and having her brother use her for target practice, shooting tin cans off her head. Yikes! Her description of the evolution of how her own understanding of how African-Americans were treated is one of the most remarkable parts of the book. It's an easy fast read, barely 150 pages including the transcription of a telling interview in the back of the book. I give AP a lot of credit for publishing this memoir because it does not put AP in a very flattering light - she was treated rather shamefully by the company, told to work nights taking sports score dictation after year making headlines covering the biggest stories of the day, so she left for US News & World REport and CNN. It's just a great and wonderful story and deserves a much bigger audience than it's gotten! Read it and tell all your friends!

I read this last weekend and was surprised that I had never heard of Kathryn before. Although she covered the Civil Rights, there is an obvious parallel because she too suffered discrimination, being a female reporter in a mostly-male profession. While she didn't offer specifics, she clearly states that her presence was not welcomed. She was resourceful and knew how to make herself useful. I believe being female definitely gave her a competitive edge over the other journalists.
