Intense love story, with some darkness, passion, and heart

As a fellow indie author, I like to show support where I can.
Recent studies have shown that fiction readers are more empathetic people, as we are constantly putting ourselves into another's shoes by reading their stories. That said, this particular story didn't really speak to me on a level that I could relate to. I've never been in an interracial relationship, so I can't speak for the veracity of the relationship as it is written in 'Beneath the Scars'.
Good things: the love between Dakota and Jordan felt real. Later, the love and fiery passion between Dakota and Brendan felt real. The sex? Smoking hot, although certain adjectives made me squirm in uncomfortable ways. But, that's just me. I'm also not into anal, but that was there, too.
Dakota is a powerful character and I love how she goes from cheerleader to badass fighter chick. She goes after what she wants and works through her grief and fear and adversity in pursuit of meaningful love. Love wins. As it should always do.
Less than good things: The book had a slow beginning, so I had to fight to stick with it. Some minor typos, but they were ones that could easily be explained, and, therefore, missed by an editor's scanning eyes. The one standing out at the moment is "stripped" when I am certain that the author meant "striped" when referring to the pattern on Jordan's shirt.
All in all, while I couldn't completely fall into the story, it has a lot of heart and the author is to be commended.

A little of everything.... promising.

I was contacted by the author to read and complete an honest review. This book is about love, loss, grief, guilt, love found, forgiveness, the resilience of the human spirit and redemption. While very slow and at times tedious at the beginning, the plot took a major turn mid-way and was quite shocking. Being an avid reader I am seldom shocked by a story twist, but have to admit this one took me by surprise. The book did pick up in pace at that point. The book has a stunningly beautiful story plot, but unfortunately was undermined by many, many grammatical errors. I think Ms. Rosado had a very beautiful story to tell, but lack of editing spoiled a very good thing.

Rosado does an amazing job of painting a picture for the reader!

The first thing I liked about this book is that I was able to relate to the characters. Although, I wouldn't say in general I need to relate to fictional characters in order to love a book. My husband is African American and I am white. We got together when we were 17 just like the characters. Although we did not grow up together. We are still married 25 years after we met.
Onto my thoughts about the book... It's difficult to find enough words to express the appreciation of how an innate object can become this awesome object by use of basic words being brought together in the author's unique and poetic way. I would call Evelyn Rosado perfectly poetic in her description of Jordan's eyes in chapter one! The reader falls in love with Jordan even before Rosado shows us how he is different from Dakota. After their difference is revealed there is no wavering in the knowledge that this young man is worthy of Dakota's love.
When Dakota's world is turned upside down, you feel her pain. How can she ever love another as deeply and profoundly? She finds a friend with scars just as fresh and pained as her own. Rosado does an amazing job of painting a picture for the reader that allows them to be present in the love making scenes. She has an artistic grasp of the languages of love and life that have you melting into the sheets right along with Dakota. I could not put this book down! You'll find passion, laughter, tears... everything I love in a romance novel. Highly recommended!!!
