The Beginnings to Change

The description on the back cover of this book sums it up nicely. I have read many “self-help” books about building your self-esteem, building your character, enlightenment, and general books about just being happy. But, in my opinion, this has been the best one I have ever read.
“Cultivate in yourself the goodness you would see in others…” A quote from the book, and one of many that stood out to me. She wrote your mind-set as being the key to your change. How could you disagree with that? We have a choice in who we want to be, good, bad, evil, it’s all up to us.
One part that really struck me was about self-doubt, and how most people struggle with. I know I do. If we surround ourselves with negative people, we end up wallowing in self-doubts. It’s a “negative-reinforcement”. We have to choose to rise above that, even if in baby steps, to climb out of the negative into the positive to help ourselves to change.
Whichever state you are in, whether negative or positive, it impacts the people that surround you. As she mentioned, think about your past and those who influenced and aided in your beliefs as you grew up. All too familiar for me. From what I read, no matter what your background you came from, it’s only you who can make those changes to become a better person, your true-self.
Her words are powerful and strong instilling in us what we could become as people, as an individual. For me at times it read like smooth poetry, her sentences and examples of historical people coaxing, enlightening to where you want to be a better person, and there is hope and we can obtain it. There are so many parts, thirty-nine of them, you read about that all flow into the heart of it all, Virtue.
The book took me some time to read, as I had to step back in order to absorb her words. One of the historical people used was Miyamoto Musashi, the undefeated samurai who lived in the middle of the 1600’s. I’ve started the book he wrote called “The Book of Five Rings”. I won’t go into depth, but only that the use of these brave, honest, courageous, enlightened, historical figures influenced me. Read the book. You won’t regret it.

A Book Worth Reading

This was a great read and informative read. I really like the way that historical figures were used as examples in each chapter. Read this book you won't regret it.
