Inspiring, but flawed, Christian analysis

Content Summary: This book continues and expands upon the theme introduced in Christianity and the Social Crisis.Christianity and the Social Crisis in the 21st Century: The Classic That Woke Up the Church Rauschenbusch asserts that competitive capitalism is corrosive to Christian influence and values, that it creates inequalities, fuels adversity, and generally pits man against man. He argues for a more fraternal, brotherly (i.e. Christian) order, and that Socialism will help produce that Christianized order.
Analytical Review: There are strengths, and severe weaknesses with this book. As to the strengths, I would say Rauschenbusch is right that Christianity should promote a more fair and equal economic order. Whether Socialism will actually produce that is the matter to debate. Most erroneously, Rauschenbusch "dichotomizes" - or splits into opposite camps of good and bad, too simply. Capitalism is competitive and bad (for the most part, he rarely has a good word to say about it), and Christian Socialism would be fraternal and good. I find this far too simplistic. Rauschenbusch just has not confronted classical economists on their own ground. He confronts capitalism on the inequities he has seen as a minister - which is a challenge he should make given the inequities of his times. Whether that justifies his argument - one may contend. Reading this, you may appreciate his sometimes excellent expression and appeal to greater Christian social justice, but you may find him also very "Christo-centric" (ignoring any other religious out there!), and you may well question whether his argument is as sound as he thinks it to be.
