My novel is an exciting story, full of warm emotions, sweeping, flooding with tears and bringing a smile to your face. While reading the stories, many of them true, you cannot remain indifferent. The novel takes place in Israel and is interwoven with adventure stories from distant parts of Siberia; from the golden era of the region and around the academic life of two major universities in Siberia during Soviet rule.

A story of lust and love between two lovers across the globe.

From Siberia with Love, written by IIana Cohen, centers around the main character, Edith. After losing her husband, she struck up an affair with a married man, Alex. The relationship takes the two lovers halfway around the world and to Siberia, a remote area of Russia. But at the risk of revealing too much about the plot of the story, I will say no more about that.
Please note that this is Book 1, suggesting that Cohen has more books to contribute. I am mentioning this, because the book seems to end abruptly, making this reader wonder if the ending of the book had not been included in my digital copy. The book series, however, continues on and hopefully will provide a more satisfactory conclusion.
Sometimes, I also wondered what made Edith feel so compelled to pursue a relationship with Alex. In other words, the motives driving Edith as a character remained unclear to this reader.
Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 5 stars for the reasons above.

Like Edith, I did not find the reward for which I'd hoped at the end.

This novel really through me.
From Siberia with Love starts by giving us a rich portrait of the main female character, Edith. In Israeli immigrant, she is a young housewife in a stable, but not particularly loving marriage, with an overbearing mother-in-law who overshadows every aspect of the household. Eventually, Edith builds a close friendship with an older man who helps her find a career and something of a life outside of her home before succumbing to a sudden death. Edith moves forward in her life as a good wife and mother, at the same time thriving in her new career.
Years later, after she is well established in this career, she meets Alex. Alex is also an immigrant; he is originally from Russia, where Edith was from Czechoslovakia. In Edith's backstory, we learn a little about her life in her previous country, and the focus is more on her motivations to come to Israel and an aunt there who takes her under her wing. With Alex, eventually, we learn the story of his growing up in Siberia. He had a difficult childhood, but rose to each challenge in ways that show great innate strength of character. That said, there are aspects of young Alex's life that will be shocking and disturbing to some readers. As I read, I found myself wondering if these issues of abuse and sexual escapades were typical of Russian culture (as the book summary intimates) or a creation of the author's.
Much of Alex's story is told in flashbacks. There is never any mention of how or why he comes to Israel, just an abrupt leap from his late teens to suddenly being in Israel, married, with children.
I became increasingly perplexed, as the story went no where. I was sensing the approach of significant plot points in the story, and but knowing how few pages remained.
And then the plot event I was anticipating took place... which, frankly, was pretty anticlimactic. But, okay, it happened, and if felt as if there would be more...
Which I believe was intentional on the part of the author. The (entire) story ends extremely abruptly -- It's hard to tell this without spoiling the plot, but the abruptness and the remaining incomplete plot threads are, again, I believe intentional on the part of the author, designed to give us a sort of empathy with Edith.
Except...
I ended more feeling mystified and confused than bereft on the behalf of *any* character. I ACTUALLY thought part of the book was missing from the file I had. After some reflection, I was able to piece together the symbolism of the abrupt ending, lack of closure, and unanswered questions. In another book, in the hands of another storyteller, it might have been compelling.
Not here. I would have felt, really *felt* a lot more for both characters if I'd had a lot more empathy built up BEFORE the end. Instead, I spent of lot of time watching Edith, wondering why on EARTH she would take such chances in certain situations, why should would behave the way she did. When she finally takes action, instead of a feeling of freedom or liberty, what I felt was more along the lines of, "Well, BRILLIANT. She's finally actually doing something spectacularly stupid that's going to bite her hard."
With Alex, instead of seeing him as this sexy, attractive, exotic creature... he was just, well unspeakably creepy. Reeeallllly creepy. Granted, he had aspects of his life, moments when strong and reliable character shown through... but mostly, he felt like an animal in human form.
I guess you can imagine, I did not find most of the book enjoyable. Like the depiction of Alex's life, this book has some strong and enjoyable moments, But overall, like Edith, I did not find the reward for which I'd hoped at the end.
BECAUSE... I eventually learned this is NOT the end. This book is the first of a trilogy. I was not aware of that when I originally wrote this review. I received an electronic copy to review, and the fact that this was part one of three was not noted... When I learned that the end of this book is not, in fact, the end of Edith's and Alex's story, but rather, the end of the "opening act..." not only did the ending make more sense, but many pieces of the book fell into place. We have learned about Edith's and Alex's background through literary snapshots and montages... The end of the book is not an abrupt departure, but instead, a cliff hanger... Had I known that, instead of feeling confused, I would have been out scouring Amazon for volume two, to find out WHAT happens next.

In many ways Edith feels like a fish out of water as an immigrant to Israel living with her husband's family.

In many ways Edith feels like a fish out of water as an immigrant to Israel living with her husband's family. Over time, she finds her own feet and gets a job with a bank where she first meets Alex. After a few more chance run-ins with him, he comes to her with a request. He needs help perfecting his Hebrew. He says that his inexperience with the language is holding him back. From there Edith and Alex open dialog about Alex's past in Siberia.
There were many times when I felt as though Edith's character was a little glossed over. I sometimes, had a little bit of difficulty in understanding her motives. However the interactions with Alex and his story more than make up for it making this a book that is difficult to put down once you really get into it.
